BUT, BUTT, BUTTS, BUTZ, GLAZE, MANN posted by Jody Thomson on Wednesday, October 15, 1997
I am collecting all information on this surname in Montgomery County, MD especially for the period of approximately 1750-1810. My ancestor, Regnal BUTTS, was born in MD ca 1794. He married Aney MANN in Adam/Brown County, OH on 12 Dec 1816. Later they settled in Montgomery Co., Indiana and in several counties in Missouri. I suspect that he was one of the children of Mary A. (-?-) BUTTS who was a widow when she settled in Brown County, OH. Based on the birthyear of some of her children, she was probably married to a BUTTS by 1790. If her husband was the same age that she was, this male BUTTS would have been born ca 1765 and he probably died about 1800-1805. The widow-BUTTS may have left MD with other families such as GLAZE. Any information at all on these families would be very much appreciated.

I am still trying to find a baptizmal record for John Hayman/Haymond to prove he is the son of William & Mary (Toadvine) Hayman of Monie, Somerset Co., MD. and Worchester Co., MD. Some feel John was born in England, but from the naming pattern of John & Maragaret (Calder) Haymond, there is a strong reason to feel he belongs to William & Mary.

ESTES, HEYWOOD, HOLT, HUDSON posted by Joan Ifland on Wednesday, December 31, 1997
Holt/Rockville, Md. Here is all I know, it's new to me so have not searched it myself. 1768 James Holt of Rockville, Maryland deeds to Ambrose Holt in Henry & Lunenburg Counties, Va in 1767. (Ambrose is the husband of Barbery Estes, dau of Elias Estes). Ambrose appears to be a child of Plunkett Holt SR. Plunkett Holt's father was Richard Holt of Old Rappahannock, Va (later Essex. Richard seems to be the son of Robert Holt and Dorothy Heywood Holt from England in early 1640's. Robert had children of David, Richard, Dorothy, Elizabeth. Robert's wife cheated and Robert cheated. Robert took up with Christian Bonnefield and married her but did not divorce Dorothy. Dorothy has children by Edward Hudson while Roberts wife and later married him and had another child. I would like any information on any of these. David the son appears to have remained mostly in MD. He was in Va and returned to Md in 1661 and may have remained there? Richard had land in Old Rappa.Co, Va by 1662 with Edward Hudson. Dorothy the daughter indentured herself for five years to Henry Aubrey. Elizabeth appears to be in VA. David and Christian Bonnefield got into a battle over Robert Holt's will, etc. I have not seen these documents, only been told so room for error. I would like to clarify it. They appear in Crime and Punishment in St. Mary's Co where they were living most of the time. I am very interested in James of Rockville and Ambrose as there is one record of Plunkett Holt leaving his estate in the hands of sons James and Ambrose and I would brothers, or related at least. If not Plunkett Holt's then who are their parents? Ambrose appears on the tithable with Plunkett but this could be a different Ambrose. This family appears to be back and forth from Va to MD as Plunkett's daughter Elizabeth wed John Brashear in Calvert Co, MD in 1695. I am interested in any Holt marriages or any Holt records in MD, any county. Many have found their ancestors through my monthly newsletter "The Holt Link". It costs $20.00 per year and is 8 pages of Holt information each month.

BEEDING, KITELEY, SMITH, SPATES posted by Diane Smith Battershell on Thursday, January 29, 1998
I am researching the family of Samuel SMITH b. ca 1740 MD? who m. Hannah KITELEY (possibly b. 1748 Baltimore Co). I think that Samuel and his family were listed on the 1790 census of Montgomery Co, MD. They moved to Rowan (later became Davie) Co, North Carolina about 1792. Their children were: Jane b. 1770, John b. 1774, William b. 1777, Samuel b. 1779, James b. 1782, Thomas b. 1784, Levi Kiteley b. 1786, Sarah b. 1789 & Perry b. 1792. They were probably of Scotch/English origin and of the Methodist Episcopal faith in North Carolina. Jane SMITH b. 1770, married a BEEDING possibly in Montgomery Co, MD. On the 1790 Montgomery Co, MD census, Samuel SMITH was listed after a Robert SPATES whom I've been told was also married to a Nancy BEEDING. I would be interested in hearing from anyone who may have information or is researching any of these surnames. Thanks!

BORDERS, DAVIS, HENSLEY, STEPHENSON posted by Dorsey Jude, Jr. on Wednesday, February 11, 1998
I am investigating a connection between Kentucky and Maryland for my DAVIS ancestors. The 1850 census records for both Lawrence & Johnson counties in KY identified certain individuals with the DAVIS surname who were born in Maryland. Specifically, the 1850 Lawrence county census identified William DAVIS born 1770 in MD with wife Nancy (maiden name unknown) born 1797 in VA. In close proximity to William, the census identified Samuel DAVIS born 1784 in MD with wife Lucretia (surname possibly STEPHENSON?) born 1794 in VA. The census also shows Samuel’s nearest neighbor was Henry DAVIS born 1786 in VA with wife Rachel (maiden name unknown) born 1789 in SC. In neighboring Johnson county, the 1850 census identified Joseph DAVIS born 1776 in MD with wife Elizabeth (BORDERS) born 1800 in VA. I believe William, Samuel, Henry & Joseph were brothers. William may have been married several times. His last marriage was to Sarah HENSLEY. The marriage record in Lawrence county shows William was age 90 and Sarah was age 66 when they married on March 6, 1860. William is later identified with his wife Sarah on the 1860 Johnson County census. I believe another wife may have been named Mary (maiden name unknown). I also found in the vital statistics of Lawrence county a death record showing Samuel DAVIS died on July 11, 1857 at age 72. His parents were listed as William & Mary DAVIS. If William, Henry & Joseph were Samuel’s brothers, then William & Mary DAVIS may have also been the parents of William, Henry & Joseph as well. If you or anyone have any connections to this family and can offer any information or suggestions whatsoever, it would be extremely appreciated. Thank you.
