- A Heroic Mother
....A special dispatch to the New York Times of Friday last contains the following
account of the horrible death of a mother and her child, at Frederick, Maryland:
Between 1 and 2 o'clock this morning Simon CRONISE, who lives about two
miles north of North Market, was startled by the cries of his children and the
sight of smoke and flames, which were pouring into his rooms. The wildest
excitement ensued, and with one of his children escaped from the burning
building and reached the yard, when Mrs. CRONISE threw from a window
three small children, who were caught by their father.
Six children were rescued from the flames, but as there was still another
in the house, the heroic mother refused to leave although her husband and
children below begged her "for God's sake to jump and save her life." After
the disappearence of the mother in search of her little one, she was never
seen again, and both perished in the flames.
