- Mrs. Susannah BELL, w/o Frederick BELL, esq, of Leitersburg, 
MD is no more.  Her death occurred on the 2nd last; age 53y 6m 26d.

- Mrs. Maria M. OLIVER, relict of the late S. S. OLIVER of Fort 
Smith, Arkansas, on the 13th last in Williamsport after a lingering 
illness; age about 57 years.                                          


Death of Mrs. FOX, one of our oldest citizens
    
- Mrs. Fox, widow of George B. FOX, died at 102 years and six months 
(per our cotemporary, Twice-A-Week) and states, "She was born in Frederick 
County where she was married and shortly afterwards removed to this place 
where she resided up to the time of her death, through a period of probably 
75 or 80 years.  She had 14 children, 56 grandchildren and 67 great grandchildren.  

When she came here the town had just begun to assume its new name of 
Hagerstown, it having been known as Elizabethtown up to that time, and nearly 
the whole of that portion of it, now covered by the block bounded by Washington, 
Potomac, Franklin, and Jonathan streets, was a marsh filed with stagnant water 
and weeds, the centre of which was the present Oak Spring, and the stream 
flowing therefrom that now passes under the Winget buildings on Potomac street, 
then flowed through what is now the Public Square.  

The old lady retained her mental faculties almost unimpaired; her memory being 
remarkably good.  She attended the "sham funeral" of Washington with three 
or four of her own children by her side.  Her eye sight was good, but she had 
been feeble for a few years past."

Mr. William FREANER had attempted to visit the widow to recapture details of 
incidents belonging to the past century from her recollections since her mind 
and memory were perfectly clear, but he unfortunately died before that occurred.

Terrible Accident - WAGONER

- On Saturday morning last, Upton WAGONER of this town met with an accident by
which he was terribly injured.  He was engaged, in connection with several
other laborers, in digging a well on the farm of Daniel MUMMA near the
College of St James and was at work upon its bottom, a distance of fifty
feet from the top, when one of his fellow workmen undertook to lower to him
a drill, weighing about fifteen pounds, by attaching it to a rope.
Unfortunately, it broke away from the rope and fell to the bottom, the sharp
point striking Wagoner below the back bone, making a fearful and dangerous
wound of some four or five inches.  Before he was brought to this town, the
wound was dressed by Dr. GRIMES, and since he has been home, he has been
attended by Dr. BOYLE who is doing all for his relief that can be done, but
he is regarded as being in a very critical condition - (Herald)

Was He Murdered? - BEATTY
 (from The Fulton Democrat, McConnelsburg, PA of Sep 5th)

- Mr Hugh BEATTY, who resided in Alleghany Co, MD, along the National Pike
about twenty miles from Hancock, took a mule from his stable, as we are
informed, one day week before last and started to his orchard, about half 
a mile distant, for some apples.  Sometime afterwards the mule came home
without the rider, and on a search being made, Mr. Beatty was found lying
dead on some rocks by the roadside with the sheepskin on which he had been
riding on top of him.  An arm and a leg were broken and his head very much
bruised.  He had been to the orchard and got a bag of apples and was
returning home when he met his death in a way that is still a mystery.

The impression of those who first discovered him was that the mule had
thrown him upon the rocks, or fallen with him.  But the fact that blood 
was discovered on the mule's neck and mane and also along the road for 
some distance between the orchard and the spot where he was found 
covered with sheepskin, coupled with the fact that he is said to have 
had two hundred dollars paid to him only a few days before his death, 
which he did not, to the knowledge of this family, spend in any way and 
all of which is now missing, has given rise to grave suspicions that he 
was foully dealt with.

The mule died a few days after the occurrence and on examination was
found to have been injured as if beaten with clubs.


Deaths of Aged Ladies

- Mrs. MARTIN, relict of the late Nathaniel MARTIN, (who died many years
since at a very advance age in this town, although his former home was in
Franklin Co, PA).  The widow, whose death is now noticed, was in the 97th
year of her age and probably the oldest person at the time of her death 
in our County.  For a number of years she had, we understand, been deprived 
of sight, but in all other respects, she was in the full enjoyment of her
faculties.  She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and mother of a
large family - one of her children having been married to Thomas KELLER 
- a leading citizen of the County who was, at one time, Sheriff and for 
many years a Judge of the Orphans Court.


- Mrs. Mary LUSHBAUGH, widow of John LUSHBAUGH (one of the 
soldiers in theWar of 1812 whose home was on W. Washington Street 
in the dwelling now occupied by Dr. SMITH) on the following day was 
consigned to the earth, in her 85th year of age.  
This lady had also been deprived of sight, but an operation performed 
by PANCOST of Philadelphia almost entirely relieved her of the affliction, 
and up to the time of her death, she could read, write and sew with her 
wonted ease.  She was a lady highly respected and leaves a large number 
of descendants.

Sometime about 1838, Jacob KERSHNER Jr. died, intestate, leaving an only 
son and child, his sole heir, who now is entitled to his half.

The partition requests division of said lands.  It also charges that part 
of the said lands were sold to KURFMAN by Gustavus, who had after the 
death of his brother, entered into possession of the entire tract and all 
the lands, and held them at the time of the filing of the bill.  

But the proceedings in the case further show, that after the filing of 
the bill and before any final decree had passed, the said Gustavus, 
somtime in the month of April or May 1872 died, intestate, leaving his 
four children, his only heirs who are now entitled to Gustavus' half share 
along with Gustavus' widow, Mrs. Ann KERSHNER.  
Jacob, Joseph and Edward are nonresidents of this state; therefore, bill 
is to be placed in newspapers once a week for four weeks to give notice 
for them to appear on or before 28 Dec 1872.

Coroner's Inquest
 
- Death of young girl, Louisa ROSS at the house of Mrs. Susan HAYS on 
the outskirts of town.  The girl left her father's near Beaver Creek on 
Aug 15 saying she was going to Leitersburg about some clothes.  He later 
found a note in her room, to her from an unknown writer, asking her to go 
with him to see a doctor.  She had asked for lodging at Mrs. Hays and was 
taken with chills and died on Monday.  The verdict is still out.

Fatal Accidents
 
- Aquila WOLF, 22, brakeman for Frederick and PA Line Railroad, was fatally 
injured when he struck his head and was knocked from the top of the train 
at the timber crossing over Tuscarora Bridge - Baltimore Sun

- John AUGINBAUGH, brakeman for Cumberland Valley Railroad, while between 
Chambersburg and Harrisburg, fell between two cars while the train was moving 
and had both legs cut off; and has since died on Tuesday last.

  last, remains were interred at Rose Hill Cemetery.
