- Mount Union Band reorganized; J. N. MARK as teacher.

- Samuel COPENHAVER cut himself in the leg with a hatchet inflicting an 
  ugly wound.

- Josiah DUTTERER, while turning out horses in a pasture, was kicked in 
  the side and broke several ribs; he is improving slowly.

- Annual celebration at Green Valley Sunday School in Isaac HESSON's 
  grove on August 20, 1881; Rev. P. A. LONG, Taneytown, and O. C. ROTH 
  of Silver Run will address the School.

- Friend from Illinois writes:  Nelson ERB, Daniel WAGNER, John DUTTERER, 
  who left here a year ago and settled in Astoria, Illinois, are as happy 
  as June bugs.  He says Nelson has been "papa" for some time.

- John SHULL is erecting a 2-story frame dwelling on his farm to be a 
  tenant house.

- On Friday evening, lightening struck and killed a valuable cow of  
  Mrs. Jesse MYERS, Union Mills.

- 12 year old son of Abraham SPONSELLER caught his hand in the gearing of 
  Bittle's Mill, no bones broken.  Dr. E. K. FOREMAN rendered surgical aid.

- Israel STONESIFER sold his property to Isaac LYNN for $1,225.

- Three boys ran away from home to parts unknown:  
     Charles HUFFERD, William KEEFER and William NAU

Murder at Hagerstown

Kirk KIDDIG was shot by W. BASSET on the 22nd, a controversy arose on account 
of Kiddig calling Basset to account for a criminal intimacy which existed 
between himself and the daughter of the proprietor of a hotel, whose ruin he had 
accomplished.  This provoked Basset and he struck Kiddig over the head with a cane.  
Kiddig grabbed Basset and threw him over the porch.  Basset drew his revolver and 
shot Kiddig through the heart.  He died in about two minutes.

Incidents

- Fearful cutting affray in Pleasant Valley on Wednesday, George MILLER, 
while teasing a man named WAGONER, was severely cut in the neck by him with 
a razor which Wagoner had concealed with the intention of killing Mr. GLADHILL, 
the storekeeper; but meeting Miller who had teased him, attacked Miller instead.  
Miller's throat was cut ear to ear but he is expected to recover.  
Wagoner was taken to jail and he is said to be insane.

- Mrs. John MARKLE of Manheim Twp, PA, was badly burned on her hands and 
face on Wednesday evening by the busting of a coal oil lamp.  The house also took 
fire and was badly damaged.

- William McSHERRY sold on Saturday last, property belonging to Ephraim MYERS 
and others on Cemetery Street to Henry MARKS for $915.

- Just received sad intelligence of the death of Charles and Martha MACKEY's 
little son who died this morning of Cholera infantum.  The funeral will take place 
tomorrow afternoon.

Incidents

- Mrs. EPPLEY, a young married woman of Washington County, died recently from 
  a snake bite, but gave birth to a child two hours before her death.  
  The child lives.

- William R. CRAWFORD of Matamoras, Pike Co, ate over a hundred clams on a 
  wager a week ago and died on Tuesday from the effects of the surfeit.

- Edward LYNCH's barn with 70 tons of hay was destroyed by fire on Tuesday night.  
  The origin of the fire is not yet known.

- Nelson KOONTZ severly cut his hand with a corn chopper on Thursday.

Tragic Death

- Andrew KOONTZ of West Manheim Twp, PA, hung himself on Wednesday.  
He was found hanging in the attic.  The jury rendered on account of abberation 
of mind and financial troubles, he had taken his own life.
