Stronghold Trust
H. Gordon Strong, a Chicago businessman, purchased adjoining parcels
of land, creating a 2,000 acre summer retreat. He and his second wife,
Louise Ann Snyder created a land trust (Stronghold Inc) for the property
in 1946, providing public access for recreational use to the mountainous
retreat. The Stronghold Mansion is now used as a wedding venue.
Gordon Strong and his second wife are buried in the Strong Mausoleum
at Sugarloaf Mountain.
Sugarloaf Mountain Cemetery
This small cemetery is in thick woods and some trees of substantial size
have grown up in the middle of the graves. No one knows about it except
those hikers and hunters who have been in the area in the winter when
the undergrowth has died off. It has had some logging done and the
tombstones were knocked over and covered up with the slashings. Some
of the inscriptions couldn't be read because of so much debris and wear.
