Gravestones of Frederick County, Maryland

Small Church & Family Cemeteries

Frederick Co, Maryland

(including a number from contiguous areas in Carroll and Howard Counties)

No. 5 of a series - Mimeographed March 1958
Later published in Names In Stone by Jacob M. Holdcraft

Transcribed and submitted by Debbie Bittle-Wilson; given to her family by Mr. Holdcraft.

This booklet serves as a catch-all for the numerous small graveyards scattered over the countryside, in Frederick and bordering areas of Carroll and Howard counties. Since each separate list is too small to serve as its own index, and to lighten the task of the researcher, a list of surnames only is appended.

NOTE: Inadvertently the compiler typed a duplicate Page 41. This has been inserted as 41a and the index has been corrected, but several blank pages will show up in the book. Nothing has been omitted.

Since space is an important consideration, many abbreviations have been used herein. The less obvious ones follow:

Veterans are distinguished by VET at end of line and outfit is given where possible. Illegible or missing letters or figures are indicated by the query symbol ? .

NOTE: The following originally appeared as an afterword in the original booklet, following the index. I felt it was more important to have it precede the inscriptions of the cemeteries and thus inform those searching here for family records to be aware that many family records have been destroyed by time and ignorance. Many farmers did move the stones since many cemeteries were in the middle of a field, often on the crest of a hill and the family(s) buried there no longer inhabited the farm or the area. I know of several cemeteries that exist only by oral tradition; the physical traces long since removed. d.b.

A hundred years or so ago there were probably 500 family cemeteries on farms in Frederick county alone. The elements and desire of farmers for unbroken furrows have taken a tremendous toll. Casual readers of these lines who may know of such graveyards, unlisted here, are invited to send locations, or a list of the names on the stones, to the address below. Full credit will be given to any such contributor when the names are published. Generations yet unborn will appreciate your thoughtfulness in leaving these vital records.
