St. Mary's Lutheran/Reformed Cemetery is located across from St. Mary's Church on Mayberry
Road, Silver Run, Carroll County, Maryland. These entries were taken from The Democratic
Advocate (local newspaper) printed December 21, 1889 and, therefore, may contain inscriptions
not found today. The newspaper listing was alphabetized by only the first letter of the
surname, but family members were listed together by plot so some connections were able to
be made which is not the case today.
Some of these tombstones are from the late 1700's with some birthdates as early as 1718.
Most of these are in the old section which, for some time, was neglected and left to ruins.
When it was cleaned up, all of the tombstones were removed and, when replaced, were lined
up back to back in two long rows; therefore, the tombstones no longer mark the precise location
of the grave.
Upon a visual inspection, I found several of these
tombstones to be in German and the most unusual one I noticed was some type of yellow stone
in which the engraving was as clear as a new stone although dated in 1800. There were
several black slate German stones that had been broken enough so a reading would be
impossible today; and, of course, some stones are now illegible. If any variances were noted
upon my visual inspection, they are so noted. Birth dates were not listed in the newspaper,
although many of the tombstones did have birth dates.
