Early Frederick County, then referred to as Western Maryland,
was formed from part of Prince George's County in 1748 and,
in 1750, gained a part of western Baltimore County.
It then included the present-day counties of Garrett, Allegany,
Washington, Montgomery and the western half of Carroll County.
Pennsylvania lies across its northern border, and Virginia across its
south-western border.
