St Vincent's Cemetery

The old cemetery of St James Church being no longer

used as a burying ground on account of the streets

being located through it, The Trustee board of Saint

Vincent's Church were by an act of the Legislature

passed in 1853, authorized to sell said ground and

to buy another burial place. Five acres were then

purchased of Puuvance & White for 1350 dollars.  Its

location is just outside eastern limits of the

city, and a little north of the Belair Road. It

was blessed on the 19th day of May, 1853, by the

Rev. L Obermeyer, Pastor of St Vincents, who was

appointed by the Most Rev Archbishop Kenrick

for that purpose. Immediately after

the burials commenced and the old bodies were

removed from St James graveyard
