Baltimore City was founded in 1729, established as a port for
tobacco shipping by Charles Carroll of Annapolis and other local
leaders on land belonging to the Calvert family (Lords Baltimore),
though it officially became a separate governmental entity from
Baltimore County in 1851.
Key Details:
Founders: Charles Carroll of Annapolis and other prominent men.
Purpose: To serve as a central port for shipping tobacco and grain.
Naming: Named after the Irish barony of Baltimore, belonging to the
Calvert family.
Early Growth: Quickly became a major seaport,
shipbuilding center, and a vital hub for trade and commerce.
Formal
Separation: While growing as a town from 1729, Baltimore City became a
distinct jurisdiction, separate from Baltimore County, with its own
government in 1851.
