Welcome to Baltimore City MDGenWeb Project!

This web site contains links and queries for those of you researching your family history from Baltimore City. Please note that the City boundaries pertain to just a small amount of area within the actual county of Baltimore, however the City of Baltimore is an independent city and not part of the county. If you are unsure whether or not your research centers in the city proper please make sure to visit our Baltimore County web site. The Baltimore County web site does contain some archive material that will overlap in the city.

I am Rebecca Maloney, Webmistress and Coordinator for this Baltimore City, Maryland site. I hope you enjoy your visit. Please email me if you have any suggestions or contributions you would like to make.

County Was Established

Baltimore City was founded in 1729, established as a port for tobacco shipping by Charles Carroll of Annapolis and other local leaders on land belonging to the Calvert family (Lords Baltimore), though it officially became a separate governmental entity from Baltimore County in 1851.
Key Details:
Founders: Charles Carroll of Annapolis and other prominent men.
Purpose: To serve as a central port for shipping tobacco and grain.
Naming: Named after the Irish barony of Baltimore, belonging to the Calvert family.
Early Growth: Quickly became a major seaport, shipbuilding center, and a vital hub for trade and commerce.
Formal Separation: While growing as a town from 1729, Baltimore City became a distinct jurisdiction, separate from Baltimore County, with its own government in 1851.
