ABERNATHY 24 Mar 1915 Mrs Lena Abernathy, wife of Louis Abernathy of Spence Street, Westernport, died at the home of Mr Abernathy's parents from typhoid fever last night. Her husband and 4 daughters survive: Thelma, Leola, Josephine, and Katherine; also an aged mother and several brothers and sisters. She was Miss Lean Dunk, daughter of Mr & Mrs John Dunk of Water Street prior to marriage.
BANE 26 Mar 1915 Mrs Charlotte J Bane, widow of Samuel Bane of Keyser WV, was found dead this morning of natural causes at the home of a brother, W Clay Welsh on Willow Avenue, Keyser. She leaves five daughters , Mrs Jessie Clem; Mrs S M Bright; and Misses Willis, Josie, and Grace Bane , of Keyser. She is the widow of Daniel Bane and in her 61st year.
BORTZ 10 Mar 1915 Mrs Sarah Bortz, aged 75 years, wife of Capt. Martin S Bortz of Centreville PA, died Wednesday (10 Mar) after a stroke of paralysis suffered on Monday. She was the daughter of Rev John Growden of Cumberland Valley. Her husband and these children survive: William G Bortz of Centreville; Frank Bortz of Pittsburgh; Walter Bortz of Racine WI; and Miss Lillie Bortz at home. Also, 2 brothers, Francis Growden of Fostoria OH and Brice Growden of Ohio. The funeral is Saturday at the Lutheran Church in Cumberland Valley.
BROWNING 29 Mar 1915 Civil War story of Maria (Mrs John H Riley) , a gr-dau of Meshack Browning, saving her horse from the conscription by members of Imboden's Raiders in 1863.
BROWNING 26 Mar 1915 Notice of the sale of the farm of Basil Browning to Henry L Browning for $2825. This farm contains 346 acres just over the Penna line. The late father Lewis Browning, conveyed the farm to Basil who is currently living on Independence Street.
BUSHEE 01 Mar 1915 Mrs Sallie (Fisher) Bushee, wife of John Bushee, died last Tuesday (22 Feb), at her Washington DC home. She was born in 1875, a daughter of the late J Wesley and Margaret Porter of Frostburg. She married in 1895 and moved to Washington DC. She is survived by her husband and 9 children. The funeral is held at the Methodist Church of Congress Heights with Rev Earle and interment in Congress Heights Cemetery. Attending the funeral were sister Lucy and Oliver T Barnard of Morgantown WV and a cousin, Miss Margaret Porter Sommerfield of Cumberland.
BYRON 04 Mar 1915 William D Byron, 83 years old, former mayor of Wiliamsport, died there Tuesday (2 Mar) of pneumonia. Born at Roxbury MA. On 29 Aug 1832, he was of a family of 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Two brothers survive, one in Boston and one in Washington DC. His children surviving; William C and Edward W Byron of Williamsport; Joseph C and Lewis T Byron of Hagerstown; and Harold Byron of Mercersburg.
CARTER 15 Mar 1915 The funeral of Mr George Carter, who died Thursday (11 Mar), took place from the home on Saturday, with burial in the Porter Cemetery. A daughter, Mrs John Connor and 2 sons, Joseph and Charles Carter survive.
CLARKE 08 Mar 1915 Mrs Sarah Catherine Clarke, aged 47 years, wife of Elias Clarke, died last night at her home, 217 King Street. Her husband and one son survive. The funeral is tomorrow from her home and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
CLARKE 02 Mar 1915 Mrs Catherine Clarke ‘s funeral was held at St Patrick's Church with Rev Father O'Hare. Attending were brother, Michael Shannon of Meyersdale and Thomas Shannon of Cumberland.
CLAYTON 12 Mar 1915 Hon. William C Clayton died yesterday at home on Mineral Street, Keyser WV after an illness of several months. Born in Hampshire CO WV 24 Jan 1831, he resided in WV all his life. His remains were sent to Romney WV for funeral services and burial.
CUMBERLAND BUSINESSES 03 Mar 1915 The Cumberland Gaslight Co, begun in 1873 and operating for 40 years, has ceased to operate as of Sept 1, 1914. The gas storage tanks on N Mechanic Street are being dismantled and sold for scrap. The plant was managed by Harry Swartzelder and Charles Seay, succeeded by Mr Seamon, Mr Miller and Mr Power. DAVIS 05 Mar 1915 A C Davis, age 51 years, died today at Western Maryland Hospital. The body was prepared by Stein Morgue and shipped to Bedford PA for burial. His wife and several children survive.
DAVIS 01 Mar 1915 Mrs Lillie Davis, 26 years of age, wife of Christopher D Davis, died yesterday at 26 Hill Street, Frostburg, of blood poisoning. She is the daughter of Mr & Mrs Elijah Skidmore of Borden Shaft and is survived by her husband, parents, and daughter, Elva Davis; and also one brother and 4 sisters. The funeral is at Salem Lutheran Church with Rev G E Metzger and burial at Allegany Cemetery.
DAVIS 20 Mar 1915 Christopher Davis, aged 65 years, died yesterday at his home on Bowery Street, Frostburg of dropsy. Born in Brunswick, Germany, he came to this country as a young boy and worked for Consolidation Coal Company for 53 years. Surviving are 8 children; Mrs Edwin Griffith, Mrs Margaret Liller; Mrs Carl Eisler; and Miss Mabel Davis of Frostburg; Mrs Russell Wagoner of Keyser WV; and sons, August, Christopher, and John Davis -all of Frostburg. Also, a sister, Mrs Joseph Moody of Hoffman; and Mr Henry Davis of Eckhart. The funeral is from the Zion Evangelical Church, Rev P C Saffran and burial at the German Cemetery, Frostburg.
DEAN 20 Mar 1915 George W Dean, aged 69 years, died today at his home, 31 Pulaski Street of heart trouble. Surviving are his wife; 4 sons, John, Eric, Clifford of Cumberland; and Benjamin Dean of Roanoke VA; and 2 daughters, Mrs Calligan of Philadelphia and Miss Nellie Dean of Cumberland. The funeral is by Rev Chaters and burial in the Beneficial Cemetery, Baltimore Pike.
DEAN 01 Mar 1915 Robert Dean was shot dead in the street by an unknown subject. An investigation continues. Robert L Dean, was about 35 years of age, with a wife and 2 children, who were boarding at the home of G W Tasker of 95 Ascension Street after coming here from Harrisonburg VA. He was a helper of B&O RR shops. The body will be sent to Harrisonburg VA for funeral and burial. A brother had been charged, held and released for the murder as he had words earlier in the evening of the shooting.
DEETZ 15 Mar 1915 Harry Deetz, aged 15 years, son of Mr & Mrs Perry Deetz of Polk Street Cumberland, attempted to board a freight train at the Frederick Street crossing and slipped and fell beneath the wheels and was ground to death. He is survived by his parents and these brothers and sisters: Mrs Michael Cosgrove; Mrs Bernard Giles; Mrs J S Swearington; and Frederick Deetz, all of Cumberland; and Mrs Harry Rawlings of Steubensville OH; Perry Deetz Jr of Bedford PA; and Mrs Joseph Quinn of Newcastle PA. The funeral is from the home with burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
DENNISON 12 Mar 1915 Mrs Rebecca Dennison, 78 years of age, widow of Robert Dennison, died in her bed at her home in Alaska WV on Wednesday (10 Mar). She is survived by sons and daughters as follows: Charles Dennison of Johnstown PA; Mrs Steckman of Pinto MD; George Dennison and Mrs M L Davis and Mrs William Simpson and Mrs Wilkins of Springfield WV; and Carl Sweet and WH Dennison at home; and Mrs Solomon Alkire of Alaska WV. The funeral is Thursday with burial on the family farm cemetery.
DEVORE 31 Mar 1915 Mrs Martha Devore, aged 60 years, wife of William Devore, died at her home near Ellerslie yesterday following several weeks of illness. Besides her husband, she is survived by 6 children: J S Devore of Ellerslie; W B Devore of Cooks Mills; Mrs C N Lowery of Ellerslie; Miss Grace Devore at home; Mrs Delilah Cook of Eylersville; and Mrs A T Pyles of Bluefield WV. The funeral is from the Palo Alto Church and burial is in the church cemetery.
DIEHL 22 Mar 1915 Mrs Rosie H Diehl, aged 25 years, died Saturday (20 Mar) at her home, 31 S Lee Street of tuberculosis. She is survived by her husband and 3 small girls; Margaret, Mildred, and Ruth , and her father, Henry Winterstine of Ridgeley WV. The funeral is from St Mark's Reformed Church, Rev Skyles, and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
DIXON 06 Mar 1915 Samuel T Dixon, aged 57 years, died last night at his home 13 Davidson Street following an illness of 5 weeks. He was a salesman for the Kenny Tea Company. Survivors are his wife and 2 daughters; Mrs Bessie Brooks of Baltimore and Miss Ethel at home; and 4 brothers, Edward T Dixon of Cumberland; James E Dixon; John T Dixon; and Jesse W Dixon of Baltimore; and 3 sisters, Mrs Mary A Dudderar; Mrs George W Peters; and Mrs Edward E Yates all of Urbana, Frederick Co, MD. The funeral is at the home and burial in Frederick Co, his former home.
DUCKWORTH 29 Mar1915 Mrs Mary K Duckworth, aged 74 years, died at her home on Jackson Street, Lonaconing of Bright's disease. Born at bedford PA, she moved to Lonaconing 40 years ago following her marriage. A son, David of Lonaconing and 2 daughters, Mrs Rachael Dohme of Lonaconing and Mrs Rosa Durst of Grantsville survive. The funeral is Monday from the home and burial in Old Coney Cemetery.

ELBIN 05 Mar 1915 Mrs Jane Elbin, widow of Henry B Elbin and a daughter of Jesse and Mary (Folck) Hinkle, died of pneumonia at her home today. She was 76 years of age last August and a resident of Flintstone since her marriage 37 years ago. Her husband died 25 years ago. She is survived by one brother, Rev Richard Hinkle of York PA and by nephews, Harry and Howard Oglebay of Cumberland. The funeral is from Mt Pleasant ME Church South and burial in the cemetery connected with the church.
ENGLE 08 Mar 1915 Mrs Amelia Catherine Engle, aged 82 years, widow of the late William Engle, died last night at the home of a son Walter Engle of Eckhart. She is survived by 4 sons, William and James Engle of Frostburg and Vincent and Walter Engle of Eckhart and a daughter Mrs Gorey Mills of Lonaconing. The funeral is from the German Lutheran Church of Frostburg.
ENOS 20 Mar 1915 Mrs Priscilla Enos, 76 years of age, widow of the late David Enos, died yesterday following a long illness at the home of a daughter, Mrs Sarah Weber at Narrows Park. She is survived by children: Mrs Sarah Weber of Narrows Park; Mrs James Tichie of Cumberland; Mrs George Henderson of Washington DC; Mrs Chris Lichliter of Elk Lick PAS; and Oscar Enos of Emerysville WV; and also, brothers, Elsworth Ling of Bucktown PA; and Emmanuel Ling of Johnstown PA. The funeral is from the home of daughter with Rev George F Brown of First MP Church and burial at the German Lutheran Cemetery.
FISHER 19 Mar 1915 The funeral of Kenneth Cresap Fisher was held Thursday (18 Mar) from the Fisher residence, 13 Decatur Street with Rev Joseph Dawson and burial was at Rose Hill. His parents, 2 brothers and 4 sisters survive: Floyd L; Russell S; Mrs J F Mason; Lucille; Roselle; and Mildred Fisher.
HARAGOSH 23 Mar 1915 Mrs Andrew Haragosh, aged 29 years, died Sunday (21 Mar) at her home of a complication of diseases following a 2 month illness. Surviving are her husband, her mother, Mrs George Pavlick; and children, Mary, Rose, and Andrew Jr.; and sisters, Katie, Millie, and Mrs George Latski; and brothers, John, George, Joseph, and Michael Pavlick-all of Uniontown PA. The funmeral is tomorrow and burial is at St Michael's Cemetery.
HARVEY 02 Mar 1915 Joseph Harvey, 40 years old, a miner, was discovered drowned in a creek bed near Westernport. He had come here from Shaw WV and lived at Franklin to work in the mines.
HOLLER 05 Mar 1915 Mrs Mary Holler, 76 years of age, widow of the late Alexander Holler of Hyndman, died today at the home of a daughter Mrs Elizabeth Whitacre, 213 W Third St, South Cumberland. The following children survive: Harry E; Samuel L; James M Holler ; and Mrs Emma T Miller of Hyndman; and Daniel and Frank Holler of Westernport; and Edward Holler of Cumberland. Also, 2 sisters in California and a brother in Des Moines IA. The funeral is in Hyndman.
HONING 13 Mar 1915 Otto Hohing, the eldest son of Conrad and Christina Hohing, natives of Germany, a prominent merchant of Frostburg, died at his home on Broadway Street last night of a stroke of paralysis. Born Feb 2, 1857 at Lonaconing, he was a miner, a brewer in his father's business, served as sheriff for Allegany County, was a county tax collector and a mine inspector. On March 4, 1880, he married Annie E Hartig, daughter of the late Philip Hartig, who survives him along with sons; Conrad, Otto Jr., and Philip and also, 2 daughters, Misses Emma and Nellie, all of Frostburg. Funeral services are from the home with Rev P G Saffron and interment at Allegany Cemetery.
HOPKINS 29 Mar 1915 William Hopkins, aged 72 years, a son off John Hopkins, and a retired miner, was found dead at his home at Wrights Crossing this morning of natural causes. He was from Wales and formerly lived on Welsh Hill, Frostburg. He retired from mining and tended bar at the saloon of Samuel Morgan. He was married twice, both of whom are deceased. Surviving children are: John, Richard, Henry and daughter Mrs Salem Hayes all of Frostburg; and a married daughter at Cumberland. The funeral is from the home of John Hopkins of Wrights Crossing with Rev J N Beall and Rev J Luther Martin and burial in Allegany Cemetery.
HORN 09 Mar 1915 Mrs Susan Horn, aged 84 years, widow of Samuel Horn, died yesterday at the home of D W Rosenmarkle, 5 miles from the city on the Valley Road. She was a member of the McElfish family, pioneer family of Allegany County. Burial is at the IOOF cemetery following services at the Flintstone ME Church South.
KALBAUGH 29 Mar 1915 Daniel Webster Kalbaugh, aged 54 years, of 108 Ormond Street, Frostburg, died of heart trouble yesterday. He was the manager of the Hitchens Brothers Company store at Carlos for 36 years. He was born at Accident MD and leaves a wife and the following children: Mrs Clyde Ellrick; Misses Anna, Pearl, Amy, and Louise Kalbaugh, and Adam, and Charles Kalbaugh all at home; and also Miss Nell Kalbaugh, a nurse at Baltimore. Brothers and sisters: Charles and Zedock Kalbaugh of near McKeesport; Mrs Ida Bepler of McKeesport; and Mrs W P Luce of Perryopolis PA. Burial is at Allegany Cemetery.
KANE 27 Mar 1915 Mrs Annie A Kane, aged 50 years, widow of the late Martin Kane, who was killed several years ago in Georgia, and, a daughter of the late Michael Kane, died of cancer this morning at her home, 27 Pear Street, following a long illness. A brother, Joseph Kane of Cumberland and a sister, Mrs James Dever of Kansas City MO survive.
LANGFORD 31 Mar 1915 Thomas Langford, a native of England, died at his home at Allegany on Monday (29 Mar) of bronchitis. Born in 1859, he came to this country in 1880. Surviving are his wife; the former Miss Mary Stoddard; two sons, John at home and George at Indianapolis IN; two sisters, Mrs John Lewis and Mrs Charles Evans of Allegany; and a brother and 2 sisters living in England. The funeral is Thursday with Rev Mr Grose of the Eckhart ME Church and burial in the McLuckie graveyard.
LITTLE 22 Mar 1915 George E Little, aged 71 years, a master carpenter for the Western Maryland RR, died yesterday following a brief illness at his home on Harbaugh Alley. His wife died 5 years ago and his only surviving relatives are nieces and nephews: Mr John Wickertshime; Miss Edith Dorn; John R Dorn; and Elderidge Dorn. His body will be taken to Elkins WV for burial.
LOCHNER 25 Mar 1915 John Lochner Sr, aged 80 years, a former miner, died today at his home on Douglas Avenue, Lonaconing. He was born in Germany Aug 11, 1834, came to this country at age 20, and married Miss Mary Fratz, who survives, and leaves these children: Mrs Lewis Miller of Lonaconing; Conrad and Leonard Lochner of Lonaconing; Albert Lochner of Westernport; and Mrs William Gochringer of Accident. The funeral is from the home on Saturday with Rev Martin Gallmeier of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Cumberland and interment in Oak Hill Cemetery.
LONG 20 Mar 1915 Mr Benjamin Long, aged 63 years, died at his home in Ridgeley WV of pneumonia on Thursday (18 Mar). He was a freight conductor for the Western Maryland RR. Surviving are his wife, the former Miss Summers, and a son at home; and also, sisters: Mrs Kirk of Fairmont WV; Mrs Ross of Blaine WV. The funeral is in the Central Church on George Street with Rev J H Baltheis and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
McCAUGHN 10 Mar 1915 Daniel McGaughn, aged 58 years, died at the home of a sister, Mrs James J Thompson, Mt Savage, on Tuesday (9 Mar), from liver illness. He is survived by: 3 brothers, James of McKeesport PA; John of Frostburg; and Archie of IL; and 5 sisters, Mrs Mary Hartman of KY; Mrs Margaret Snyder of Cumberland; Mrs James Thompson of Mt Savage; Miss Sarah McCaughn of Baltimore; and Miss Katie McCaughn of Oakland CA. The funeral is Friday with Mass at St Patrick's Church and burial at St Michael's Cemetery of Frostburg.
McELFISH 16 Mar 1915 Norman H McElfish, aged 73 years, died at his home in Beans Cove last night following an illness of ten days. He is survived by the following children: William, Charles, Ida, and Mrs H Donahue. Burial in the Catholic Church cemetery in Beans Cove.
McKAIG 10 Mar 1915 Mrs Florence Worthington McKaig, wife of Merwin W McKaig died at a Philadelphia sanitarium today, aged 56 years. She had been in ill health for 6 years. She is the daughter of the late Hon. George A Pearre and a sister to Col. George A Pearre; and William Pearre both of Cumberland; and Graham Pearre of Washington DC. Her husband and son Wallace W McKaig of Cumberland survive. The funeral is from Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Rev Cleveland Hicks and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
MICHAELS 25 Mar 1915 Mrs Catherine Michaels, aged 76 years, died at Sylvan Retreat, Cumberland today. She is survived by 6 daughters: Mrs A L Plummer of Frostburg; Mrs John Atkinson of Borden; Mrs James McGee of Gilmore; Mrs Henry Herbaugh of Midland; and Misses Idella and Atlantic of Cumberland. The funeral is from the home of the daughter in Midland and burial in Old Coney Cemetery with Rev W E Bird officiating.
MICHAELS 03 Mar 1915 Joseph Michaels, aged 47 years, a miner, died at his home on W Main Street this morning. A wife and 1 child survives.
MILLER 19 Mar 1915 Wilson M Williams, of Mattie, died yesterday at the home of daughter Mrs Scott R Miller of Clearville, with whom he was spending a few days. He is aged 71 years and a veteran of the Civil War, serving in Company K of 208 PAV Infantry. His wife was killed by lightning six years ago. He is survived by Mrs Miller and Carl and Jennie at home. Burial in Mt Pleasant Cemetery
MORGAN 08 Mar 1915 Mrs King Morgan, daughter of Mrs Martha Wells and the late Thomas Wells, died Saturday (6 Mar) at her home on Scotch Hill, Lonaconing, following a brief illness. She married Mr Morgan in 1906 and he is employed by Ritchey & Sons, plumbing and heating. His parents are Mr & Mrs Esau Morgan and longtime residents of Lonaconing. She is survived by her husband, a son, Gordon, and 3 daughters; Katherine; LeRue; and Elsie May Wells. Also, her mother, a sister, Mrs Ralph Brown; two brothers, Robert and John Wells, all of Lonaconing. The funeral is from the home at Scotch Hill and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.
MOSES 22 Mar 1915 Mr Samuel Moses Sr., aged 93 years, died at the home of a daughter in Davis WV of pneumonia. He was born on Jan 4, 1840, and served the Confederacy in the Civil War. Formerly of Westernport, he broke a leg that led to pneumonia. The following children survive: Mrs Noah Beeman of Lonaconing; Mrs William Lamby of Davis WV; Mrs Katie Spriggs of Cumberland; Samuel of Emerysville WV; Mrs Hacker of Lonaconing; Misses Mathilda and Eliza of Cumberland; and Floyd of Eckhart Mines. Burial was at Philos Cemetery.
MULLAN 29 Mar 1915 Miss Margaret Mullan, about 30 years of age and a deaf mute, and a daughter of W T Mullan of Grand Avenue, was murdered by strangulation yesterday following a struggle for her honor. She is survived by her parents and the following brothers and sisters: Charles F; William T; Ambrose J; Bernard V; Albert; Daniel A; Eugene F; Mary A; and Sarah R Mullan. The funeral is at St Patrick's and burial in Sts Peter & Paul Cemetery. MYERS 15 Mar 1915 Samuel Myers of Eckhart, died in his 69th year, on Sunday (14 Mar) at Miner's Hospital, Frostburg of elosis of the heart. He was a blacksmith for the Consolidation Coal Co. He is survived by 6 daughters; Mrs William Holsinger of Mt Savage; Mrs William Farraday and Mrs Henry Johnson of Frostburg; Mrs Jefferson Emerick of Cumberland; Mrs Lou Emerick of Somerset PA; and Miss Florence Myers of Eckhart. Also, 4 sons, John, in the seminary at Louisville KY; and Morris, Frank, and Walter Myers of Eckhart. Also, 1 sister, Mrs Ida Thomas of Frostburg; and 5 brothers, James and Andrew of Paris KY; Nimrod Myers of Frostburg; John Myers of Addison PA; and William Myers of Eckhart.
NELSON 20 Mar 1915 William F Nelson of Eckhart, aged 51 years, died of paralysis. He is survived by children: John, Andrew, Patrick, Roy, Bridget, Isabell, Christina, and Mrs Henry F Brode of Eckhart. Also, 3 sisters, Mrs Thomas Morris of Eckhart; Mrs Dennis O'Hara and Mrs Andrew Kerber of Cumberland. The funeral is from St Michael's Church and burial in the church cemetery.
NILAND 01 Mar 1915 Miss Barbara Niland, 19 years old, of Fairview Street, Piedmont WV, died of typhoid last night at Allegany Hospital. The body will be returned to Piedmont for services and burial.
O'NEAL 24 Mar 1915 The funeral of John O'Neal of Piedmont took place on Tuesday (23 Mar) from St Peter's Church at Piedmont. He lived with a daughter on Hampshire Street. His wife died several years ago and he leaves several children.
OFTEN 16 Mar 1915 Eckhart - Patrick Often, an aged citizen of Eckhart, was struck on Monday night by an automobile while waiting for a street car at Frostburg in front of the railway waiting room. He was brought to Eckhart on a Cumberland and Westernport Electric Railway car and assisted to his home by friends. He was severely bruised about the body. The driver of the car escaped identification
ORRIS 08 Mar 1915 William Charles Orris, aged 76 years, a Civil War Veteran, died at his home 36 Race Street last night of heart trouble. PEARRE 12 Mar 1915 James Graham Pearre, aged 53 years, died last night at the home of a brother, Col. George A Pearre, 198 Washington Street, Cumberland, from heart trouble. This follows the death and burial of his sister, Florence McKaig last week. He is the youngest son of George A Pearre and Mary Worthington Pearre and he was born in Cumberland in 1882. His wife, the former Miss Elizabeth Compton of Washington DC, and 2 daughters, Mary Worthington Pearre and Elizabeth Otey Pearre survive. Also surviving are, 2 brothers William Pearre and Col. George A Pearre of Cumberland; and one sister, Miss Mary Pearre, now of Lucerne Switzerland. He had been associated with the C&O Canal and lived in Washington DC.
PINE 29 Mar 1915 Mrs Susan Pine, aged 56 years, died Saturday at the home of a son, Clarence Spidel at 436 Grand Avenue, following a three months illness. She was married twice; to James Spidel and also to Abraham Pine. The funeral is Thursday and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
POLLOCK 09 Mar 1915 George L Pollock, aged 27 years, son of Mr & Mrs William Pollock died at his home at "Watercliffe", Lonaconing today of pneumonia. His parents and one brother, John Pollock of Cumberland survive. Services from the home and burial at Oak Hill Cemetery.
PRYOR 15 Mar 1915 Alexander Pryor, aged 63 years, died yesterday at his home, 19 Necessity Street, Cumberland, of convulsions. A wife and 4 sons and 2 daughters survive. The funeral and burial is at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church and Cemetery.
RANK 08 Mar 1915 George A Rank, aged 29 years, died at his home, 260 Columbia Avenue on Saturday (6 Mar) of heart trouble. His wife, the former Miss Marie Hoenicka, a daughter, Elizabeth; his mother, Mrs Elizabeth Rank; brothers, John M; James W; Lawrence; and William Rank; and sisters, Mrs Nellie C Jordan and Miss Katie Rank. His father is the late Matthew Rank. He was employed by the Potomac Glass Co as a glass blower and was a skillful baseball player, playing with the Cumberland Athletic baseball Club from its organization a number of years ago. The funeral is from the home with Rev C F Bergner of St Luke's German Lutheran Church and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery.
RANKIN 25 Mar 1915 Mrs James B Rankin, aged 73 years, died at her home today at Westernport. She was born in Scotland and lived at Westernport for 26 years. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs E J Roberts of Westernport and Mrs Robert Glenn of Mt Savage; and 5 sons, John, Robert, Arch, of Westernport ;and James B and William F Rankin of Pittsburgh.
RANKIN 19 Mar 1915 Alexander Rankin, aged 53 years, died at his home in Borden Mines of asthma. He was a former miner and a mine inspector. He is survived by his wife and 4 sons, Frederick, William, Robert, and Clayton Rankin; and 4 daughters, Bertha, Emma, Frances, and Helen Rankin-all at home. His father was the late Alexander Rankin. Also surviving are; brothers, James Rankin of Frostburg; and Robert Rankin of Borden; and sisters, Mrs Agnes Rowe; Mrs Reuben Anthony; and Mrs James Minnick-all of Frostburg. The funeral is from the home and burial is in Allegany Cemetery.
RASE 22 Mar 1915 Frederick Rase died this morning at home in Eckhart after a 3 day illness. Aged 33 years, he is survived by a widow and 2 small children. His mother, Mrs Sophia B Rase, sisters Mrs NR Bailey and Mrs Elizabeth Porter and brothers, Lewis, Milton, W Justus, and Henry.
RICE 15 Mar 1915 James Upton Rice [Photo], aged 92 years, a farmer of Cumberland Valley, died suddenly on Sunday (14 Mar) while visiting his daughter, Mrs Walter S Nicewarmer, at 42 Fairview Avenue, Cumberland. He is survived by 4 children: Mrs W S Nicewarmer; Mrs Sarah Beal; Mrs John T Nicewarmer and Robert H Rice. He was born in Cumberland May 6, 1823 and married in 1849 to Miss Carolina Growden, daughter of John Growden of Cumberland Valley, and she died in 1898, and since that time, he has been visiting his children. A sister-in-law, Mrs Sallie Bortz died on Monday night. The funeral is at Fellowship Hall in Cumberland Valley with services by Rev William Pierpont; Rev Wilbur Snyder; and Rev Joseph Dawson and burial in the church cemetery.
RICHARDS 10 Mar 1915 Mrs S M Richards, 83 years, died at home 16 Columbia Street yesterday from a stroke of paralysis sustained 3 months ago. Her husband operated the Richard's Farm Implement business of N Centre Street until 25 years ago, when the sons entered the business. Surviving are, her husband; 4 children; Mrs George W Snyder; J W Richards; W L Richards of Cumberland; and Mrs Bessie Growden of Cumberland Valley PA; and also a sister, Mrs A M Kincaid of McKeesport PA. The funeral is Friday from the home and interment at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev Cleveland Hicks.
RICKER 01 Mar 1915 Mr Frank Ricker, aged 69 years, died yesterday of Bright's disease that covered a period of illness of 12 years at his home at Lonaconing on Big Vein Hill. He was born here in 1849 and mined for the Maryland Coal Co of Detmold Mines. He is survived by five sons and 3 daughters; Joseph, John, August, Thomas and George Ricker; and Misses Adelaide, Mary, and Anna Ricker all of Lonaconing. Also, 3 sisters and a late brother, August Ricker Sr of WV. The funeral is at St Mary's Church and burial at St Michael's Cemetery, Frostburg.
ROBINETTE 17 Mar 1915 marriage of Miss Pearl Roland, dau of Mr & Mrs John Roland, Flintstone to Wade H Robinette, son of Hon John B Robinette. Following the ceremony the couple will motor to Mississippi, where they will relocate. Accompanying them will be Guy W Twigg, son of Dr AP Twigg and Mr George McIntyre. Mr Twigg will drive the touring car to Gulf Port MS where they will take up plantations.
ROBINETTE 06 Mar 1915 Jesse Robinette, aged 74 years, died yesterday at his home in Rush, MD. He is survived by his wife, Mrs Othelia Robinette, brother JC Robinette and sister Mrs JT Long. He operated a general store in Rush and was a former postmaster before Rush was eliminated as a separate office. He is a brother-in-law of Charles C Willison. Burial is in the family plot in Rush.
SINCLAIR 10 Mar 1915 Mrs Herbert Sinclair, aged 55 years, died at Philadelphia. She was a native of England and a former Cumberland resident. Her body will be brought here for burial at Rose Hill Cemetery beside her late sister, Mrs John C Grant, who died 2 years ago at Vancouver BC, Canada.
SIRBAUGH 27 Mar 1915 Mrs Rose Sirbaugh, aged 37 years, of Westernport, died this morning of typhoid fever at the Western Maryland Hospital. Mr Sirbaugh is suffering of the same disease in the same hospital. Two children are at home with the disease, and four other children are at home. Burial will be made in Westernport.
SMITH 15 Mar 1915 Mrs Katherine Smith, 83 years of age, widow of Peter Smith, died at her home in Lonaconing of old aged infirmities. She was born in Bavaria, Germany in 1832, came to America in 1856, locating in Cumberland, and moving to Lonaconing 2 years later. She is survived by 3 sons and 2 daughters; Peter, John and Miss Hannah Smith of Lonaconing; Mr George Smith of Cumberland; and Mrs John D Frenzel of Barton MD. The funeral is from the home on Scotch Hill and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.
SMOUSE 10 Mar 1915 Mrs Jane Smouse died Friday (5 Mar) at the home of a daughter Mrs D G Scott at Woodlawn PA. Her son, George Smouse once worked for the Daily News. She is an aunt of Mr Robert Reynolds of Virginia Avenue, Cumberland. The funeral and burial is at Woodlawn PA.
TENNANT 19 Mar 1915 James Tennant, aged 75 years, of Borden Shaft, died at his home. He is survived by his wife; and 2 children; Mrs Clarence Riggleman and George Tennant- both of Shaft. Also surviving , one brother, George P Tennant of Borden Mines. Seven of his children are deceased. The funeral and burial are from the home and at Percy Cemetery.
TOTTEN 08 Mar 1915 Mrs William P Totten, aged 75 years, of Oakland MD died on Saturday (6 Mar) of pneumonia. She is a sister of Commadore R M G Brown of Morgantown WV and of Charles Brown of Cincinnati OH. No children survive.
UHL 31 Mar 1915 George A Uhl, aged 80 years, died last night at his home in Mt Savage. He is survived by 4 sons and 3 daughters: Charles R; Walter; Albert; and Harry Uhl; and Mrs U I Hilton of Eckhart; Mrs Robert Flynn and Mrs Dallas Chisolm, both of Mt Savage. He had been a carpenter foreman for the C&P RR at Mt Savage. The funeral services are at St George's PE Church and burial in the cemetery of the church.
VOIT 05 Mar 1915 Mrs Bertha D Voit, wife of Ward T Voit, died yesterday of peritonitis of one weeks duration at her home on Browning Street. She is survived by her husband, 2 daughters, Hamilene and Audrey; one son, Kenneth; 4 sisters, Misses Randa, Cora, and Ola and Mrs John Moore; and 3 brothers, Leonidas, Ashby, and Charles Twigg of Cumberland. The funeral is from Grace ME Church with Rev Frank Killmon and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
WALKER 26 Mar 1915 Mrs Sarah Walker, widow of Charles H Walker, former postmaster of Frostburg, died last night at her home on W Union Street from an attack of la grippe. She is survived by her daughter, Mrs George E Pearce. She was a daughter of the late Moses Wade and married Mr Walker in 1859. She and Mr Walker were born on the same lot in Frostburg, now the site of St Paul's Lutheran Church. Mr Walker died April 4, 1912. The funeral is from the residence with Rev John H Bickford of the First ME Church and burial in Allegany cemetery.
WALKER 29 Mar 1915 James Walker of Blaine WV was killed Saturday (27 Mar) by a fall of rock in the North American mine of the Blaine Mining Co. He was 45 years of age and lived at Lonaconing until 5 years ago. He is survived by a wife and 5 children: James, Robert, Edward, Agnes and Mary; and also 2 sisters, Mrs Charles Cutter of Chicks Crossing; and Mrs William Burt of Pleasant City OH. The funeral is Tuesday with burial at Laurel Hill Cemetery with Rev W L Lynn officiating.
WHITE 22 Mar 1915 Ex-mayor of Cumberland, Warren C White died at the Western Maryland Hospital this morning following a 2 week illness. He was born near Huntingdon PA on June 01, 1859, and married Miss Anna Ellenberger of Schellsburg PA on Sept 10, 1885. He was elected mayor in 1900 and 1902, engaged in the lumber business, the tile and brick business, and the German Brewing Co. His wife and 4 children survive: Blaine White, Mrs F Brooke Whiting, Miss Anna Lee White, and Carl White. The funeral services are from the home, 203 Greene Street with Rev Skyles of St Mark's Reformed Church and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
WHITE 27 Mar 1915 Miss Alice White, aged 50 years, daughter of the late Thomas F and Mary E White, died at home, 111 Fayette Street of pneumonia. She resided with a sister, Miss Jessie White, a teacher at Union Street School. Three other sisters, living in Gallion Ohio, also survive. The funeral is from the home by Rev William C Hicks and burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery.
WILLIAMS 19 Mar 1915 Wilson M Williams of Mattie PA, was found dead of apoplexy in bed yesterday at the home of a daughter, Mrs Scott R Miller of Clearville PA. He was 71 years of age and a veteran of the Civil War, having served in Company K, 208 Reg., PAV. His wife was killed by lightening 6 years ago at his home in Mattie. He is survived by 3 children: Mrs Miller; and Carl and Jennie- both at home. Services are at Mt Pleasant Church in Monroe Township.
YINGLING 22 Mar 1915 Mrs Nancy Yingling, aged 67 years, was found dead in her bed at the home of Joshua Lewis, 56 Gay Street, where she has lived for several years. The deceased has no known relatives in this city. A daughter is thought to be at McKeesport PA.
ZINK 29 Mar 1915 George Zink, aged 33 years, died yesterday at a hospital in Chicago following an explosion at the Illinois Steel Co that scalded him badly, two weeks ago. Three others died also. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss Elizabeth Lindner of Goethe Street; a brother, William Zink; and sisters, Mrs Fred Seitz; Mrs Fred Dreyer; Mrs Raymond Zimmerla; Mrs William Shaw; Mrs Edgar Wise; Mrs Grover Zink; Miss Leoda Zink and Miss Emma Zink -all of Cumberland. The funeral is from his late home, 1 Knox Street and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery.
