ALBRIGHT 16 Feb 1915 John E Albright, a resident of Meyersdale and an agent for the B&O RR at Sand Patch, fell beneath an engine and died today following an operation at Allegany Hospital. He was aged 25 years with a wife and 2 children at Meyersdale. The body is at the Butler morgue and is being prepared to be sent to Meyersdale for burial.
ARCHITECTURE 02 Feb 1915 John M Frantz plans to construct a building at the corner of Bedford and N Centre Streets on land formerly known as "Neff's Corner" and the current location of E R Neff Grocers. Occupancy is scheduled for October 31, 1915. [Article has 4 paragraphs].
ARNOLD 23 Feb 1915 Joseph Arnold, aged 65 years, died today at his home in LaVale. He is survived by 5 brothers: Dominic Arnold of Barton; James Arnold of Lonaconing; Albert Arnold of Elkins WV; Edward and Dennis Arnold of Cumberland and 3 sisters; Mrs Ruth Ellen Martin of Cash Valley, LaVale; Mrs Margaret Arnold of Cash Valley, LaVale; and Miss Elizabeth Sarah Arnold who lives with her brother in LaVale. The funeral and burial is at St Patrick's Catholic Church.
ASH 16 Feb 1915 Mr Espy Ash, a former local resident of Mt Savage and later of Davis WV has returned to Coleharbor N Dak following a visit here. He married a Minnesota girl and now has a fine farm there. Later, brothers Philip and Elmer Ash relocated near him marrying local sisters there.
BIRCHARD 09 Feb 1915 William M Birchard, well known in Cumberland, died Sunday at Sibley Hospital in Washington from pneumonia. He was in the government service and lived at 1625 Wisconsin Avenue. Besides his wife, the former Miss Carrie Allen, daughter of Mrs Mary T Allen of Cumberland, there are 4 children surviving.
BIRMINGHAM 10 Feb 1915 Robert L Birmingham, aged 52 years, died at his home 66 Union Street after being in failing health for more than a year. He was involved in the retail business for 35 years here. A brother, Michael Birmingham and 2 sisters, Misses Mary and Anna Birmingham survive. The funeral is Friday at St Patrick's Catholic Church with Rev Father O'Hara officiating.
BRADY 16 Feb 1915 Dr Hugh Young Brady, aged 74 years, known throughout Fayette and Westmoreland counties of PA, died at his home in Ohiopyle last night of a stroke of paralysis. He comes from an Indian fighting Brady family of Cumberland Valley of 200 years ago. He was born at the Brady farm, near Greensburg, a son of Hugh and Sarah (Mellon) Brady. About 1863, he enlisted in Co. C, 54 PAV under Capt. Z T Beier. He located at Ohiopyle when the B&O RR was being constructed. He is survived by the following children: Charles, William, Mary, Ella, and Anna Brady, al at home and a brother Dr David Brady of West Newton.
BRODERICK 18 Feb 1915 Miss Catherine Broderick, aged 68? Years, died on Wednesday (17 Feb) at Pittsburgh PA. A former resident of Cumberland, the funeral will be held from the home of a brother, William F Broderick, 43 German Street and burial is in St Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.
BROWN 08 Feb 1915 William Brown, 30 years of age, was struck and killed by an eastbound B&O RR engine #8 passenger train at Brackin's Curve, 4 miles west of Hyndman at 8 o'clock yesterday. Mr Brown is a watchman at Brackin's Curve and did not see or hear the train as a freight train occupied the track normally used by passenger trains. A brother-in-law, brakeman RF Wolford picked up the body. He is survived by his wife, the former Miss May Wolford of Hyndman. The burial will be in Madley PA.
CAVANAUGH 03 Feb 1915 Miss Elizabeth Jane Cavanaugh, aged 19 years, daughter of Mr & Mrs Dennis Cavanaugh at 280 N Centre Street died this morning at Allegany Hospital following an operation yesterday. She is survived by her parents, brothers, John and William and 2 sisters, Mrs Henry Gerdemann and Miss Nancy Cavanaugh. The funeral is at St Patrick's Catholic Church.
CHRISTIE 10 Feb 1915 Robert E Christie died at Dallas TX. He was the youngest son of A S Christie of near Twiggtown. The funeral is from the home of an uncle, Lee Chaney at 203 Baltimore Avenue and burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery, with Rev Pile officiating.
CLARK 25 Feb 1915 Mrs Catherine Clark, widow of Philip Clark, died this morning following a long illness. she is survived by the following: Mrs Jennie Brennan of Philadelphia; Mrs Daniel M Strucker of Lead SD; Mrs David Farrin of Washington DC; Mrs Thomas J Niland; Mrs Frederick Miltenberger; Mrs Veronica B Kilty; Mrs John Edenhart; and Messers, John Clark-city postman; Michael A Clark-policeman; and Philip F Clark of Cumberland. the funeral and burial is from St Patrick's Catholic Church.
CLARK 23 Feb 1915 Mrs Theresa May Clark, aged 63, wife of C W Clark of 51 Elm Street, died yesterday at Allegany Hospital following an operation. CONNELL 24 Feb 1915 Capt. Thomas F Connell, aged 40 years, died today at the home of his mother at 331 Maryland Avenue. He was a son of the late Thomas Connell and is survived by his mother, Mrs Mary M Connell; sister, Mrs William E Yarnell and brothers, William M Connell; Victor L Connell; Eugene N Connell; Arthur Connell and C Leo Connell, all of Cumberland; and Rev Father James E Connell of Oakland MD. The funeral will be celebrated by his brother from St Mary's Catholic Church with Father O'Hara delivering the eulogy and burial at St Patrick's Cemetery.
CRAZE 15 Feb 1915 William H Craze, aged 68 years, a native of England, died yesterday at his home on W Mechanic Street, Frostburg. His wife and 8 children survive: William, Maurice, Sidney, John, Stanley, and Harry and Misses Bessie and Myrtle Craze. He was a harness maker for H B Shaffer & Co, and L Stanton of Frostburg. The funeral is from the First M E Church and burial is at Allegany Cemetery with Rev John H Bickford officiating.
CROWE 22 Feb 1915 George A Crowe, 87 years of age, died and was buried from the home of son John Crowe at Johnson's, Garrett Co, MD with Rev W S Nicholson of the ME Church South and interment at Johnson's. He was born at Garrett Co, MD and one of the few remaining citizens who can recall stage coaches. His wife died 18 months ago. These children survive: Mrs William A Murphy; Mrs Calvin Wilson; Floyd, John, and Thomas Crowe of Garrett Co; Clarence and Eugene Crowe of Meyersdale PA; and Mrs Lawrence Finzel and George Crowe of Frostburg.

DALE 08 Feb 1915 Mrs Reuben Dale, mother of Mrs Robert Tennent of Vale Farm near Frostburg, died at her home at Wilkensburg PA on Wednesday (03 Feb). The funeral was held there on Saturday.
DINNING 20 Feb 1915 Mrs Jane Dinning died yesterday at her home in Koontz of paralytic stroke. She was the widow of James Dinning and lived here with her son Mr Connell Dinning, an official of the New Central Coal Co. She was 70 years of age, and came here from Scotland 20 years ago with her husband. Surviving are these sons and daughters: Connell and Alex Dinning of Lonaconing; James and Allen Dinning of Berlin PA; Misses Jessie and Margaret Dinning of Lonaconing; and Mrs Henry F Cook of Cumberland. The funeral is from the home with Rev HL Earnst of the First Presbyterian Church and burial in Oak Hill Cemetery.

EDENHART 05 Feb 1915 Mrs Annie Edenhart, wife of Charles Edenhart, aged 54 years, died this morning at her residence at Ridgeley WV. She is survived by her husband and 8 children: Mrs A B Harrison; Mrs Louise Preskorn; Mrs Earl Dailey and Misses Lillian, Ora, Annie all at home; and 2 sons, Joseph M Edenhart of Dayton and Cincinnati OH; and J H Edenhart of Ridgeley. She was Miss Annie B Michel, daughter of Conrad Michel, born on the Swan Farm in this county and resided here all of her life. Surviving brothers and sisters are: Mr Henry Michel of Cumberland; Mrs Conrad Miller of Cumberland; Mr Conrad Michel of Canton; and Charles and John Michel both of Cincinnati OH. Funeral from the Zion Reformed church on Mechanic Street and burial in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
FITZGERALD 15 Feb 1915 Mrs Mary Fitzgerald, formerly of Hoffman Mines, living with daughter, Mrs John Brode at 307 N Centre Street for several years now, died yesterday at age 82 years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs Brode and one son, William Fitzgerald of Cumberland. Also, a brother, William F Kirby of Cumberland; and 3 sisters, Mrs Ellen Murphy of St Paul MN; Mrs Margaret Ahrbery of Pittsburgh; and Mrs Cornelius Bahen of Frostburg. The late John Kirby of Vale Summit was a brother. The funeral is at St Patrick's Catholic Church of Cumberland and burial is at St Michael's Cemetery, Frostburg.
FOX 19 Feb 1915 Mrs Charles Fox, aged 22 years, died today at Miner's hospital Frostburg following an appendix operation. Her husband and 2 children survive. Her remains were taken to her home at Barton MD.
FOX 25 Feb 1915 Mrs Mary Fox, aged 26 years, of age, wife of Clarence Fox of Sleepy Creek WV, died yesterday at Allegany Hospital where she was brought bor treatment, but died following admittance. The body will be returned to Sleepy Creek for funeral services and burial.
FREAR 05 Feb 1915 Harry J Frear died at Roseburg Oregon. He was a former resident of Oakland and served as mayor there several years ago. He was employed there by the Kenaldd Lumber Co.
FURLOW 08 Feb 1915 Alice Furlow, a machinist of the B&O RR, died at home, 815 Lafayette Avenue, Cumberland. Besides his wife, there are 3 sons, James of Baltimore; Jesse and Joseph Furlow of Cumberland and also 4 daughters, Mrs Mark Schuck of Ridgeley; Mrs Isaac Bucy of Cumberland; Miss Providence and Miss Sarah Furlow at home. Funeral from the Grace ME Church and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
GORMER 06 Feb 1915 Isaac Gormer died on Thursday (4 Feb) falling from a car in the Western Maryland RR yards in Ridgeley WV. A heart failure caused his fall. A wife and 6 children survive: Mary and James Gormer at home; George Gormer of Wills Creek Avenue; John Gormer at Washington Bottom; Samuel Gormer, a member of the West Side Fire Department; Mrs Charles Shipe of Spruce Street; and also, 2 sisters, Mrs John Barncord of Ridgeley and Mrs Foreman of Pittsburgh PA.
GRIMMINGER 01 Feb 1915 Samuel Grimminger, aged 64 years, died last evening at his home, 24 Orchard Street following a 2 months illness. He was born March 6, 1851 at the White House Hotel in Hagerstown MD. He was an assistant foreman at the Cumberland Steel Co for 27 years. He is survived by three sons; Samuel E, William T, and Bernard F Grimminger all of Cumberland. Also, two brothers, Charles of Cambridge Springs PA; James B of Whites Ferry OH. The funeral is at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Rev O"Hara officiating.
HAGER 26 Feb 1915 The funeral of Mrs George Hager was yesterday from the Emmanuel Episcopal Church and burial was at Rose Hill Cemetery, Rev Peter Lange officiating. She is survived by husband George Hager, daughter, Miss Bessie Hager, adopted daughter, Miss Loretta Hager, and brothers and sisters; Mrs Sarah Bergman; Mrs Martin Hager; Mrs Jennie Carothers; Mrs Arthur Stevens; Mrs Emma Ash; John Long; Charles Long; and Hunter Long.

HARTLEY 02 Feb 1915 Mrs James S Hartley, aged 50 years, died last night at the home of a nephew, Dolph Hartsock, 5 Maryland Avenue following an illness of a few days. Since the death of her husband James Hartley on Sept 10, 1912, she had made her home with a family named Roberts, but as her condition worsened, she was moved in with relatives. Three brothers, George F Hartsock of Hagerstown; Eli Hartsock of Flintstone; and Edwin Hartsock of Oldtown; survive along with; one sister, Mrs M Struckman at Flintstone. Also, her nephew, Dolph Hartsock and nieces, Mrs J H Miller of N Mechanic Street ; Mrs I J Smith of Lindnerville and Mrs Houser of N Centre Street. Burial is in Greenmount Cemetery with Rev Balthis officiating.
HENSLER 25 Feb 1915 Mrs Rosina Hensler, aged 81 years, died at her residence 125 Walnut Street today. Her husband, henry Hensler and 3 children survive: Mrs August Schaaf; Mrs George Winfield; and Mrs Kasmir and 20 grand children. The funeral is from Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church.
JACK 16 Feb 1915 Mrs William Jack, aged 44 years, died today at Miners Hospital, Frostburg, after being admitted on Wednesday. The body was removed to their home on Mill Street, Frostburg where her husband and 9 children live and survive: Thomas, James, Raymond, Charles, and Misses Genevieve, Pearl, Viola, Anna and Bernadene-all at home. She was formerly Miss Bridget Rafferty and is also survived by brothers and sisters: Charles, John, and Bernard Rafferty; and Miss Mary Rafferty and Mrs Peter F Carroll. The funeral is held at St Michael's Catholic Church Frostburg.
KABOSKY 16 Feb 1915 Mrs Anna Kabosky, aged 94 years, wife of John Kabosky, died of infirmities at her home on the William's Road. She came to this area in 1880 from Germany. Two sons, both of this city survive: Charles and Louis Kabosky and also, 20 grand children. The funeral and burial is at St's Peter & Paul Catholic church and cemetery.
KEARNS 20 Feb 1915 Franklin Harry "Butch" Kearns, of Martinsburg WV, died yesterday of pneumonia. he was born 48 years ago, the son of Mr & Mrs George Kearns and was a fireman for the B&O RR. His widow and 3 sons survive: G W Kearns, C M Kearns, and H C Kearns, all at home and also, 2 sisters, Mrs Catherine Arvian and Mrs John Thompson of Martinsburg. The funeral is at St Jooseph's and the burial at Green Hill Cemetery, Martinsburg.
KEARNY 04 Feb 1915 John J Kearny, aged about 50 years, a native of Cumberland died at his home at Huntington WV yesterday of Bright's Disease. He was the manager of the WV Brewing Co at Huntington. His wife, the former Miss Catherine Fessenmeier of this city, and 3 daughters and 6 sons survive. They are: Matthew J; Mary; Catherine; Clara Theresa; John; Crummitt; Marshall Vinson; and Andrew Kearny, all at home. He left Cumberland 15 years ago. He was a brother-in-law of ML Fessenmeier of Baltimore and AJ and John Fessenmeier of Cumberland and also of Miss Theresa Frssenmeier of Cumberland. His brother Matthew Kearny is employed at the post office here. His body is taken to the Fessenmeier on Smallwood Street for the funeral and burial is in the Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery.
KELLEY 23 Feb 1915 Mrs Mollie Kelley died on Sunday (21 Feb) at her home in Scottsdale PA due to a complication of diseases. She was the daughter of the late Francis and Mathida Boor of Cumberland Valley. She is survived by her husband, William O Kelley and daughters, Eve and Leota at home. She was a niece of Mrs Anna Donahoe of N Centre Street and an aunt of Henry Whip of Boone Street, Cumberland. The funeral and burial is at Scottsdale PA.
KIFER 05 Feb 1915 John Kifer, aged 69 years, a brother of Silas Kifer of Cumberland, died today at his home in Pratt MD following a 6 month illness of a stroke of paralysis. He never married and is survived by 3 brothers; Silas of Cumberland; David of Paw Paw WV; and L Kifer at Pratt MD. Also, 3 sisters, Mrs Alice Twigg of Cumberland; Mrs Percilla Twigg of Town Creek and Miss Mary E Kifer at home. Burial is at Pratt on Sunday.
KIMMEL 26 Feb 1915 Cleveland Kimmel, aged 23 years, and son of the late William Kimmel, died yesterday from a complication of diseases at his home in Midland. About 8 months ago, he was compelled to stop work on the railroad and since then, has received medical attention at a Cumberland hospital. he leaves his mother, 7 brothers, and 3 sisters. Burial is at Thayersville, Garrett Co, MD.
LUDWIG 16 Feb 1915 Mrs Jane Ludwig, aged 78 years, died at her home at Junction WV of pneumonia. She is a sister of Mrs Alex McFerran of Columbia Avenue. Her daughter is the postmistress at Junction.
McGOYE 22 Feb 1915 Miss Annie McGoye died Saturday (20 Feb) at the home of her parents Mr & Mrs Michael McGoye of Midland. She is survived by parents and these brothers and sisters: Mrs Edward Shue and Mrs John Monahan of Gilmore MD; John McGoye of Gilmore; and James McGoye of Ocean MD. The funeral is at St Joseph's Catholic Church and burial in Belvedere Cemetery.
McMULLEN 22 Feb 1915 Joseph McMullen, 85 years of age, an uncle of Cumberland merchants Hugh A and Daniel F McMullen, died yesterday at Eckhart Mines at the home of a daughter, Mrs Peter W Conroy, where he has resided for the past 12 years. He was born at Newry, County Armagh, Ireland on Sept 5, 1830. His daughter survives. The funeral and burial is from the St Michael's Catholic Church at Frostburg.
MEADOWS 23 Feb 1915 Lewis N Meadows, aged 37 years, proprietor of Meadows Drug Store, died at his home in Frostburg today. He had been in business since 1898 and is survived by a brother, Celsum Meadows and sister, Mrs Annie Dunnigan, both of Frostburg. The funeral services are at St Michael's in Frostburg and the body will be sent to Martinsburg WV where Mr Meadows was born for services and burial.
MEANS 13 Feb 1915 Edward Means, aged 74 years, died at his home at Chaneysville, Bedford Co, PA of heart paralysis on Monday (8 Feb). He was a Civil War veteran. Surviving are his widow who is an invalid and 11 children; Sheridan of Mt Savage; Daniel of Davis WV; Thornton and Edward of Cumberland; Mrs Daniel Imes of Pratt MD; and Alexander, John, Harriett, Dora, Jesse, and Bella Means all at home. A sister, Mrs Dennis Ash of Chaneysville also survives. The funeral is by Rev John Bennett at the Church of the Brethern with interment in the adjoining cemetery.
MELLINGER 08 Feb 1915 George Mellinger died suddenly in Pittsburgh on Thursday (4 Feb), aged 65 years. He had been for years the boss roller in the Jones & Laughlin Steel plant at Johnstown PA. His wife, one son, and 2 daughters survive in Johnstown where Mrs Mellinger has extensive property interests. He was a brother of ex-mayor William G Mellinger and an uncle of Maryland Theater proprietors, Warren and Frederick P Mellinger. The funeral was yesterday at Johnstown.
MILLER 16 Feb 1915 Amos W Miller died this morning at Allegany Hospital. He was brought here from Cleveland for an operation of an abscess of the head six weeks ago. The body will be taken to the home of a daughter, Mrs John M Stickley of Federal Street where the funeral will be held. Ah is survived by these children: Mrs John M Stickley; Bruce E Miller, James R Miller, Charles W Miller; and Lester Miller. The funeral is from the Trinity ME South Church with Rev L Hammond and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
ODER 20 Feb 1915 Charles Oder, a former resident of Frostburg, and a brother of J B Oder of the Frostburg Mining Journal, died at Denver CO yesterday.
ORR 24 Feb 1915 Mrs Mary J Orr, 64 years of age, wife of patrolman of the B&O RR, John T Orr, died of paralysis of the heart this morning at her residence 122 Pennsylvania Avenue. She is survived by her husband; a son, Albert E Orr of St Louis MO; a daughter, Mrs D A Miller of Washington DC; and sisters, Mrs Dickle Davis of Oakland MD; Mrs Harry Williams of Frostburg; Mrs Annie Burton of McKeesport PA; and Mrs Ellen Davis of Denver CO. The funeral is from the home and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
ORT 19 Feb 1915 Lewis J Ort [Photo], 55 years old, died today at Western Maryland Hospital of paralysis following a 10 day illness. Born at Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany in 1860, he settled in berlin PA, moved to Frostburg in 1879 and to Midland in 1900. He married Miss Carrie Turner of Berlin MD and is survived by his parents at berlin MD; four sons, Clarence and John at Midland; Frank at Midland; and Walter at Cumberland ; a daughter, Miss Annie at Midland; a brother, George C at Pittsburgh; and 4 sisters, Mrs Charles K Mulligan of Germantown PA; Mrs Robert M Fisher at W. Courtwright NY; Mrs Emma O'Malley at Berlin PA and Mrs Minnie Rhodes at Cartwright NY.
PARKER 01 Feb 1915 Mrs William Parker, aged 82 years, died on Sunday (31 Jan) of a paralytic stroke suffered 2 weeks ago, at her home at Parkersburg near Eckhart MD. She was born on June 15, 1833 at the Porter homestead and at the age of 19 years, married William Parker, who died 5 years ago. Two daughters, Misses Fannie and Druzilla , at home, and 2 sons, Stanley and Newton of Pittsburgh PA survive. She was the daughter of Josiah Porter of Eckhart in a family of 21 children. Only Mrs Justice Rephorn of Eckhart and Josiah Porter of Cumberland living.
PATTERSON 18 Fen 1915 Mrs Martha Patterson, widow of Silas B Patterson, aged 626 years, died Tuesday (16 Feb) at Three Churches WV. Her husband was a Confederate veteran. Ten children survive: Mrs Nan Peters of David WV; Mrs Edward Patterson of Elkins WV; Ellis Patterson of Denmar; Charles; Lester; and Emma Patterson of Sunburst NC; and Mrs Peters, Mrs Sanders, and Mrs Pownell of Hampshire CO, WV.
PRICE 03 Feb 1915 William M Price, former lawyer of Cumberland died at Pittsburgh PA yesterday. He was 70 years of age and is survived by his wife. She is a daughter of the late Jesse Korns and an aunt of Robert W Little and Mrs T R Palmer. Funeral services will be from the railroad train and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev Joseph Dawson officiating.
ROESSLER 01 Feb 1915 Mrs Ada Roessler, wife of Louis G Roessler, formerly engaged in the jewelry business at Cumberland, died in Los Angeles CA. She was the eldest daughter of Dr David Welfley and Mary (Fairall) Welfley and was born in Cumberland. One child of this marriage is deceased. A sister, Mrs Henry Taylor of Washington DC, along with her husband and mother are surviving. The funeral is from the home of an aunt, Mrs Rachel Carr of S Centre Street and burial is at Rose Hill Cemetery.
RUTHERFORD 20 Feb 1915 Clarence J Rutherford, aged 11 years, son of Mr & Mrs Scott Rutherford, of Williams Street in Frostburg, died Thursday (18 Feb) of diphtheria. The burial is at Allegany Cemetery.
SCHILLING 06 Feb 1915 B. Griffith Schilling, former Cumberland resident, died last night at his home in Newark OH. A son of the late John Schilling, he was cashier at the 3rd National Bank here for many years. SCHOFIELD 01 Feb 1915 Mr Benjamin T Schofield, aged 72 years, died at his home W Union Street in Frostburg, yesterday. A native of Mosley, Lancastershire, England, he was a resident of this area for 37 years, engaging in the plumbing business. Surviving are his wife and the following children: Miss Sarah, Mrs James Athey, and Mr W L Schofield, all of Frostburg; Alfred Schofield of Hyattsville MD; John J Schofield of Newark NJ; Fred C Schofield of Washington DC; Mrs W A Conway of Connellsville PA; and Samuel T Schofield of Nashville TN. The funeral is at the German Lutheran Church with Rev P G Saffren.
SKILLING 09 Feb 1915 Dr John D Skilling, of E Main Street, Lonaconing, died last evening of old age, 88 years. A native of Ashland OH, he was born on March 21, 1827, and was a surgeon at Clarysville for the Union Army during the Civil War. After the war, he continued his practice first at Eckhart, and Frostburg and settled in Lonaconing to practice. He married Miss Mary Quail of Neuville OH on April 6, 1861 and then entered the war. Mrs Skilling died on April 6, 1909 and the survivors are 3 sons and 4 daughters. They are: Dr W L Skilling; Dr J T Skilling of Lonaconing; Rev David M Skilling of Webster Grove near St Louis MO; Mrs Mary Johnston, wife of Charles D Johnston of Knoxville TN; Miss Fannie Skilling, teaching in New York City; and Misses Margaret and Sadie Skilling of Lonaconing. The funeral is from the Presbyterian Church and burial is at Oak Hill Cemetery.
SMITH 22 Feb 1915 David K Smith, 53 years of age, brother of Alex Smith the county tax collector, died at his brother's home at 50 Loo Street, Frostburg on Sunday (21 Feb). He is survived by his wife. Before he retired due to an injury to his eye which led to his death, he was an employee of the Consolidation Coal Co at Frostburg. Five sisters survive: Mrs Frederick Scofield of Washington DC; Mrs William Mooney of Lonaconing; Mrs Robert Pascoe of Frostburg; Mrs Jane Williams of Pittsburgh; and Mrs James McDonald of Cumberland.
SPIES 17 Feb 1915 Anthony Spies, aged 75 years, died today at his home on Smith Street from a cold contracted 6 weeks ago that later developed into pneumonia and then dropsy. Born in Germany, he came to this country at age 13, locating first in Cincinnati and later in Cumberland. He was married 2 times, his first wife dying 18 years ago. He is survived by his 2nd wife, Mrs Anna Spies and 4 children of the first union: Peter, Henry, and Mrs Katherine Simmons, all of Cumberland; and Mrs Mathilda Ross of Berlin PA. The funeral is from the home of son Henry, 157 Fayette Street and burial will be in the German Lutheran Cemetery.
STAUP 19 Feb 1915 Mrs Susanne Dye Staup. 88 years of age, relict of the late Peter Staup, died at the home of a son, George W Staup yesterday following an illness of 1 week. She was one of Lonaconing's oldest citizens. Services will be held at her son's home and burial in the Oak Hill Cemetery under the directions of Rev A T Maiden of the United Brethern Church of Westernport.
STEVENS 08 Feb 1915 Mrs Theophilus Stevens, aged 58 years, died at her home at Allegany on Saturday(6 Feb). She was formerly Amanda Middleton of Paw Paw and has been an invalid for several years. Surviving children are Clarence Stevens of Iowa; Walter, Roy, Howard, Myrtle, Annie, and Emma Stevens all at home. Brothers and sisters surviving are: Mrs Richard Williams of Borden Shaft; Robert Middleton of Frostburg; Mrs Annie Robinson of Cumberland; Alexander Middleton of Carlos; Mrs George Reider of Hoffman Mines and Miss Rhoda Middleton of Paw Paw. The funeral is from the home and burial in the Percy Cemetery with Rev John A Grose officiating.
SWANKHAUS 25 Feb 1915 Miss Katie Swankhaus, daughter of Mrs Michael Swankhaus, died today at Sykesville Sanitarium where she had been a patient. She was 30 years of age and an invalid from tuberculosis. Her father, a renown carpenter, Michael Swankhaus, died March 1912. she is survived by her mother and the following sisters and brothers, all of Cumberland; Henry, Frank, Michail, William, Albert, and Miss Anna Mary Swankhaus; and Mrs John Rohman. The funeral is from sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church.
TAYLOR 25 Feb 1915 Miss Katherine Taylor, aged 67 years, daughter of the late Mr & Mrs William Taylor of barrellville, died of heart trouble at the home of a sister, Mrs William Lowery of Duquense PA. She is survived by 3 sisters; Mrs William Lowery of Duquense PA; Mrs James Dick of Youngstown OH; and Mrs John Yantz of National, this county. The body was returned to the are on the B&O RR and burial to be in Mt Savage at the family plot.
TEWELL 06 Feb 1915 William Tewell, farmer, of Artemas, Bedford Co, PA near Flintstone, was found dead in a chair there yesterday afternoon.
UTT 13 Feb 1915 David Utt of Milton PA died of a stroke of paralysis at his home on Wednesday (10 Feb) in his 76th year. He had married Miss Margaret J Fallmer who died in 1912. Two children survive; Mrs Mary M Fallmer, wife of Roland Fallmer of Paradise; and Jesse E Utt of Cumberland. Funeral is at the residence and burial at Fallmer Cemetery.
WARD 20 Feb 1915 James Richard Ward, 29 years of age, died last evening at the home of his mother, Mrs Jane H Ward, 184 N Mechanic Street. Besides his wife who was Miss Matilda Rohman, daughter of John Rohman, she is survived by these brothers and sisters: Easter Ward of San Bernardino CA; Wallace Ward of Punta Gorda FL; Rod, Donald, and George Ward of Oklahoma City OK; Mrs M D Lee of Oklahoma City OK; and Miss Alice Ward of Cumberland. The funeral is from St Patrick's and burial in the church cemetery.
WARFIELD 01 Feb 1915 Arthur Warfield, aged 44 years, died at his home, 71 Cumberland Street, yesterday. He was formerly a cashier at the Dime Savings Bank, an agent of the Adams Express Co; and formerly in business with Isaac Hirsch. He was born Oct 3, 1871, at Baltimore and came to Cumberland in 1873. His wife, the former Miss Florence Gill and 3 daughters; Emma aged 7 years; Elsie aged 5 years; and Florence aged 2 years survive. Along with brothers, Harry Warfield of Baltimore; Perry Warfield of Cumberland and Gustavus Warfield of Independence PA. The funeral is from the 1st Presbyterian Church and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
WEANS 03 Feb 1915 Charles Weans, aged 33 years, an orchard employee, boarding at the home of Robert Miller of Pinto WV, was found dead under the home after drinking carbolic acid. He had been in love with a young woman who was also employed at the Miller home as a domestic. His body was taken to Keyser for burial as he was a resident of Rio WV.
WEAVER 27 Feb 1915 Mrs Sarah A Weaver, aged 46 years, died at the TB Sanitarium on Haystacks Mountain, Cumberland this morning. She is survived by a son Earnest Weaver and a daughter Miss Retta Weaver. The funeral is from the home of J W Avers, 129 Grand Avenue and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.
WELLER 13 Feb 1915 Mrs Viola Weller, aged 24 years, of Millstone, died today at Allegany Hospital following an operation. Surviving are her husband, and 2 children. Wolford's morgue has the body and burial is to be at Millstone.
WELLS 02 Feb 1915 Hiram J Wells, aged 57 years, the senior member of the Farmers Produce Co, died last night at Western Maryland Hospital following a months illness and 2 operations. He was born in Paint Rock NC on Feb 3, 1858 and came here 15 years ago. His widow, Mrs Anna R Wells, a son Raymond, and his father Francis M Wells of Paint Rock NC survive; along with sisters, Mrs Joseph La Rue of Nashville TN; Mrs Mary Best of Ashville NC; Mrs Bessie Logan of Morristown NJ; and brothers, J P Wells and G P Wells of Paint Rock and Robert H Wells of Osteen FL. Burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery.
WHITE 16 Feb 1915 Mrs Elizabeth Davis White, native of Wales, wife of George D White, died at her home in Oakland MD, at age 63 years. Surviving sisters are Mrs J T Ohr of Cumberland and Mrs Harry Williams of Frostburg.
WISNER 25 Feb 1915 John H Wisner Sr, 5x years of age, conductor for the Western Maryland RR, died today at the residence in Ridgeley WV after a illness of several months. He had suffered a severe bruise which developed into a cancer requiring the amputation of a leg, and since that time he has been an invalid. His 2nd wife, Miss Clara B Fisher of Cumberland, an aged mother, and children of the 1st marriage to Miss Jennie V Long survive, They are: Elwood C Wisner; John R Wisner; Mrs B F Murray; Mrs W B Lease; Mrs Edith Zarger; and Misses Annie and Irene Wisner-all of Cumberland. Also, brothers and sisters: Mrs E Wilbur of Eatontown NJ; Mrs E D Hoffman of Baltimore; Mrs J B Blackburn of Ridgeley WV; Mrs W H Holler of Cumberland; A J Wisner of Ridgeley WV; and Sidney and Arthur Wisner of Cumberland. The funeral is from the home and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.
WOODWARD 26 Feb 1915 Capt. C A Woodward died at his home last night in Washington DC following ill health for 2 years. He was 84 years of age. He was with the B&O here for 15 years. His 2nd wife and children survive: William of Chillicothe OH; Harry of Wheeling WV; James of Cleveland OH; Misses Fannie and Margaret of Cleveland; and Mrs Neil Ways of Philadelphia. Burial is in Queens Point Cemetery, Keyser WV.
WRIGHT 20 Feb 1915 Mrs Catherine Wright, aged 65 years, wife of F William Wright, died yesterday at her home, 2 Glenn Street from congestion of the brain. She was twice married, her first husband was John Carpenter of Hyndman. Surviving are: one son, George H Carpenter of Portland Oregon; two brothers, George H Wilhelm of N Centre Street, Cumberland; and James Wilhelm of Mt Savage; two sisters, Mrs B V Poole of Hyndman; and Mrs David Cook of Ellerslie. The funeral is from the home with Rev Martin F W Gallmeier of the Trinity German Lutheran Church and burial is in Wills Creek Chapel Cemetery at Cooks Mills.
