ALLEGANY COUNTY ORPHANS HOME 11 Feb 1890 A full column article on the Allegany County Orphans Home- Opened 08 Oct 1883 with Miss M C E Doerner as director and Miss Elizabeth Kuhlman and Miss Katie Holzen assistants. The home burned 24 Feb 1885 and they moved to a new home at Cumberland & Lee Streets on 27 Feb 1885. They currently have 15 children. The home was incorporated 19 Dec 1889.

APPEL 22 Oct 1890 Mrs Hannah L Appel, wife of John B Appel, died at her home near Orleans on Sunday (19 Oct) in her 56th year. She had suffered from rheumatism for years but died of acute asthma. Funeral services are from the home with Rev R Kolb of Paw Paw conducting services.

ARMBRUSTER 23 May 1890 Miss Emma Armbruster, the youngest daughter of William H & Catherine Armbruster died this morning of fever superimposed by the grip at her home 23 Independence Street. She had been employed in the store of Mrs M Price. The funeral is from the German Lutheran Church and burial in the cemetery on the Baltimore Pike.

ARNOLD 24 Jun 1890 Mrs Elizabeth Arnold, aged 61 years, died at the residence of a son William Arnold at 9 Fulton Street. She was born and raised in Frostburg conducting the Franklin Hotel which burned down several years ago. Her remains were taken to Frostburg today for services and burial on the C&P RR.

ASH 28 Apr 1890 Mrs Mary Ash, widow of the late Amos Ash, died on Thursday (22 Apr) at the home of her son Abraham Ash near Flintstone . She was in her 85th year and leaves a large family of grown children. She was the mother of Rev. Henry Ash of the Pa M E Conference.

ASH 12 Feb 1890 Mr Hanson Ash died yesterday at his residence 6 miles east of this city. He was 70 years of age and lived in this county all of his life except for 4-5 years in Whitley Co, IN. He leaves a large grown family to mourn: Mrs George Davidson; Mr Owen Ash and Mr Henry Ash of this city; John Ash of Clarysville; Mrs Esther Whip of Centreville PA; Ewell Ash of the firm Ash & McElfish of Rockwood PA; Mrs Hulda Wilson of Flintstone and Miss Amanda. Mr Ash was a uncle of Capt. H H Hartsock and a cousin of Mr Charles H Wolford of this city. The funeral from the Mt Pleasant M E Church South and burial in IOOF Cemetery of Flintstone.

ATHEY 02 Dec 1890 Mrs Athey, wife of Aaron Athey, died at her residence on green Ridge on Sunday morning (30 Nov). Erysepelas was the cause of death. Her husband and several grown sons and daughters survive.

B&O ROLLING MILL 07 Mar 1890 The B&O Rolling Mill, idle for the past year, is leased effective 01 Apr 1890 to the Cambria Iron Company of Johnstown PA. It is expected to employ 250-300 men with additional business and revenue to the B&O Railroad to transport material and finished products to and from Cumberland and Johnstown. BAKER 02 Jun 1890 Mr George Baker died at his residence 14 Lena Street of consumption. He was a well known stone mason and was married with 5 children. Funeral services tomorrow from Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church and interment in the cemetery connected with the church.

BARRETT 20 Oct 1890 Mrs John L Barrett of Mt Savage died Friday (18 Oct) and the funeral was today. He leaves a wife and 7 small children. He was born and spent his entire life in Mt Savage.

BEALL 27 Jun 1890 Mrs Emma Beall, wife of John T Beall, a farmer living near Folck's Mill, died today of a lingering illness. Mrs Beall was a daughter of the late George M Blocher and was born in this city. She had been ill for several years and confined to her bed for 2 weeks. She leaves a husband and 8 children, 6 still at home. Son Charles, the oldest child is in St Louis and is unable to attend the funeral. The funeral is from Mt Pleasant church on Sunday with Rev Bennington officiating.

BLOCHER 16 Oct 1890 Mrs Priscilla Blocher, widow of the late Daniel Blocher of this city, died today in Baltimore at age 76 years. A short while ago she was paralyzed and two weeks ago took an awful fall breaking her leg. She is the daughter of Henry Wineow and is survived by 4 sons; William, Henry, George, and Thomas Blocher, and also 5 daughters, Mrs John Reese, Mrs Tillie Childs, Mrs Levi Wickard, Mrs Kate Gilmore and Miss Emma Blocher. . She is a sister of Daniel Wineow and of Mrs Charles and Mrs Wolfe. The funeral is from the home at 34 Columbia Street with burial in Rose Hill cemetery.

BORTZ 24 Mar 1890 The funeral of Harry Bortz took place from his fathers residence on N Mechanic Street with Rev Fishbiner and interment in Rose Hill cemetery.

BOTTENFIELD 25 Apr 1890 Mrs Jennie Bottenfield, wife of Albert Bottenfield of Flintstone died yesterday at the residence of typhoid fever. She was the only sister of Drs. LB and JJ Wilson and besides her husband, she leaves 5 small children. The funeral is tomorrow and burial is in the old family graveyard.

BRILL 06 Mar 1890 Mrs Lydia B Brill, wife of the US Express Agent Charles Brill, died today at her residence, 86 Harrison Street, and she would have been aged 27 years on March 10th. Her maiden name was Palmer and she came to this city 5 years ago. She leaves behind, her husband and 4 children, the oldest, a boy 7 years of age and the youngest, a girl of 3 months. The funeral will be from the home and burial is to be in the Riverton Cemetery at McKeesport PA.

BRODERICK 01 Jul 1890 Michael Broderick, aged 85 years, a well known gardener of this city, died at his residence on Sulphur Spring Hollow, near the city, of old age. He leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs Coomes of Washington DC; and a niece, Mrs Barney O'Donnell and a nephew Patrick O'Donnell. The funeral is today from the St Patrick's Catholic Church.

BRUCE 16 Jun 1890 Col. Robert Bruce died at his residence on Washington Street on Saturday (14 Jun). He was born on 26 Mar 1805, a son of Upton Bruce and the former Miss Sarah Magruder Claigett of Washington Co MD. He married on 2 Jan 1834 to Miss Anna Maria Carroll Hodges of Baltimore. He leaves his wife and 3 children: Robert A Bruce of Hagerstown; Mrs Gen. Kelley of Washington DC.; Mrs D J Blackistone of Cumberland; and also his brothers and sisters; Norman, Henry, Charles, Upton, and Mrs William Price and Mrs Gen. Walter Gwynn. Funeral services from Emmanuel Episcopal Church with Rev Clarence Buell. (3/4 column article).

BUCHANAN 11 Aug 1890 Mrs Fannie G Buchanan, widow of the late Thomas G Buchanan, died at her residence in Ellerslie yesterday, aged 50 years, of typhoid fever. She leaves 8 children, 4 sons and 4 daughters; all of whom are married. The funeral is from the Presbyterian Church in Ellerslie with Rev Moffatt presiding and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

CARROLL 22 Dec 1890 Hon Patrick Carroll of Lonaconing died at his residence of injuries received in the Kingsland Mine of the Maryland Coal Co on Tuesday 16th inst. He was born in County Lough, Ireland about 70 years ago, came to this county in 1838, settling in 1861 at Lonaconing. His wife and 1 son, John Carroll, a miner at Midland and 1 daughter, wife of Frank Ryan, a merchant of Midland, survive. The funeral is from the catholic Church at Lonaconing and burial in Barton MD.

COLES 28 Apr 1890 Mrs Rebecca Coles, aged 77 years, wife of Alvin Coles of Bedford Street died yesterday at the "Home". She was a milliner for several years and her health failing, she sold all of her property and entered the "Home". The funeral is tomorrow at Christ Episcopal Church with Rev Mr McCormick.

COOPER 27 Jan 1890 On Saturday (25 Jan), Mrs Annie L Cooper, wife of G E Cooper, died at her residence 35 N Centre Street, aged 35 years after a 3 week illness. Her husband works at the cement mill and leaves him and 5 small children, 2 of whom are also ill. The funeral is from the home and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

CREEGAN 12 May 1890 Mr Terry Creegan of Lonaconing died in the Koontz Mine from a fall of coal while at work.

CROOK 31 Jan 1890 Article is a 4 paragraph story of the capture of General Crook by Mr James Daly, a brother-in-law of the general. Mr James Daly was from Garrett Co and was in the Confederate Army and quartered in Oakland and had intimate knowledge of all the people around general Crook's headquarters. He and a band of reckless adventurers stole into Cumberland and awakened Gen Crook at the point of a gun. The General and Mr Daly have not spoken following the war.

CROOK 22 Mar 1890 Maj. Gen. George Crook, USA, died at his command in Missouri at the Grand Pacific Hotel of heart disease with little warning. DAWSON 14 Mar 1890 Mrs Mary G Dawson, daughter of William Hopkins of this city, died at her residence 22 George Street last night of typhoid fever. The funeral is tomorrow from the home.

DAWSON 29 Oct 1890 Samuel Dawson, 12 years of age and barefoot, applied to the station house for relief saying that he was an orphan, had no friends or relatives, and was hungry and had no employment, was unschooled and wanted to go to school. Judge Thompson committed him to the St Mary's Industrial School.

DEETZ 03 Feb 1890 Miss Georgie Deetz, the eldest daughter of Mr George Deetz, was married today at the residence on S Mechanic Street to Prof. George R Daisy of Columbus OH, Pastor J E Moffatt of the Presbyterian Church conducting. The groom is the son of Jesse R Dorsey of Glouchester NJ.

DEETZ 22 Sep 1890 Tomorrow at the Centre Street M E Church, Mr Robert Deetz, the 2nd son of Mr J Wesley Deetz will wed Miss Annie Cook, the daughter of Mr James A Cook with the Rev Richard Norris presiding.

DEHLER 13 Oct 1890 Mrs Sophia Holzshu-Dehler died at the residence of her father on Hanover Street of typhoid fever after a short illness. Mrs Holzshu was born in Cumberland on 14 Dec 1863. and was 26 years, 9 months and 26 days of age. On 28 Apr 1886, she married Adam Dehler who survives with a 3 year old daughter, Edith. The funeral is from the German Lutheran Church with Rev Homreghause, a special friend of Washington DC, to conduct the services with interment in the cemetery associated with the church.

DOYLE 01 Jul 1890 Edward Doyle of 31 Maryland Avenue, died yesterday, aged 45 years. He was born in Mt Savage and lived in Cumberland for a number of years working in the rolling mill as a puddler. About 6 months ago, he went to Roanoke for employment, got sick on Sunday and returned here where he died. He leaves a wife and 6 children. His body is being taken to Mt Savage on the C&P RR for interment.

DRISCOLL 04 Apr 1890 Miss Rosa Driscoll, aged 19 years, a daughter of Edward & Rosa Driscoll, died today at her residence and the funeral is Friday.

DUDLEY 15 Mar 1890 Samuel Dudley of Eckhart Mines died yesterday of pneumonia. He was 34 years of age and an active Baptist. The funeral is tomorrow with Rev James Miller and interment in the grave yard behind the old stone building.

DUFFY 04 Sep 1890 Mr James Duffy, aged 14 years, the son of Mr Michael Duffy of Pekin, died Monday (01 Sep) in the Paton Mine of the Maryland Coal Company by a fall of roof coal while working with his older brother and Mr Fitzpatrick. The funeral was today in Frostburg at the Catholic Church.

EISEL 08 Dec 1890 Mr Chris Eisel, aged 26 years, died at Frostburg of heart disease and was buried in Allegany Cemetery.

ELLERSLIE 14 Oct 1890 The Ellerslie Fire Brick Works owned by Mr James Gardner of this city was totally destroyed by fire last night.

ELLIOTT 28 Mar 1890 A telegram was received last night by William Elliott that states his brother Harvey Elliott was killed at Wallace, Idaho yesterday morning in distributing telegraph poles along the railway. He is a son of George Elliott, a farmer living on the Bedford Road, 9 miles out. He was about 23 years of age and his body will be returned for burial. 07 Apr 1890 The funeral of Harvey Elliott took place at the Bethel Church on the Bedford Road. 14 Apr 1890 Particulars of the accidental death of Harvey Elliott at Wallace, Idaho.

EYLER 24 Jan 1890 Mr Raphael Eyler of Hazen, near this city, died of grippe and pneumonia at Mechanicstown, Frederick Co, where he was visiting his mother. He is a son-in-law of Mr O P Hendrickson from whose place the funeral will be held with interment in the family burying ground on the farm.

FAEGA 29 Mar 1890 Miss Lucy May Faega, daughter of W Henry Faega of Frederick Street died this morning at her residence of typhoid fever from which she suffered for 2 months. She was 16 years of age. The funeral is from the home with burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery.

FARRELL 27 May 1890 Margaret Reynolds Farrell died at her home on Baltimore Avenue of apoplexy today. She was born in County Lutrim, Ireland on 17 Mar 1830 and came to America in 1850. She came to Cumberland and lived with her uncle Thomas Faulkner on Centre Street and on Oct 4, 1854, she married James Farrell. They were absent from this city until the completion of the Kingwood Tunnel when they returned to this city. In 1860, they moved to the farm on the Williams Road until James Farrell died on 10 Mar 1864. She moved back to Cumberland and began a confectionary store in 1866 and prospered. On Friday, a stroke of apoplexy resulted in her death on Sunday, 25 May. The following children survive: Mary, married to James Corcoran of Pittsburgh; W J, married to Ida McLaughlin of Pittsburgh; Mary A., married to Robert Sizer; Bridget, married to Frank Dobson of New Britain Conn; Rosa A., unmarried; and also, 4 sisters and 1 brother in Ireland. A niece, Mrs McDade and her daughter Fannie of York PA were present here too. Burial from St Patrick's with Father Brenan.

FERGUSON 06 Feb 1890 Mr John Ferguson, superintendent of the James Ganiner & Sons Fire Brick Co of Ellerslie, died at his residence in Ellerslie from a general collapse of his system. He was in his 68th year and leaves 10 children, 4 boys and 6 girls , all grown but 2. He had been ill fro 2 years but bed confined for only a few days. The funeral is at the Presbyterian Church in Ellerslie and burial in Rose Hill cemetery.

FIRLE 20 May 1890 Mr & Mrs Henry Firle celebrate their golden wedding anniversary with a High mass at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church. Mrs Firle was a Miss Catherine Kraus and they lived in Cumberland or Frostburg all these years. Their seven children attended: Father Joseph Firle; Father Nicholas Firle of NY; Sister Mary Lucy (Miss Lizzie Firle) of Baltimore; Sister Mary Alphonse (Miss Rosa Firle) of NY; Mr John Firle of McKeesport PA; Mrs W H Doerner; and Mrs George Brinker of McKeesport. FRANTZ 07 Mar 1890 Mrs Rosanna Frantz, aged about 56 years, wife of Joseph Frantz, died today at her residence on Centre Street of prevailing fever and heart failure from which she suffered for 2 weeks. She was a daughter of the late Henry Smith and was born on the Brooks farm, 4 miles from this city. She leaves her husband and 6 children: John N; Alvey; Oscar of Emporia; Mrs Thomas Sliger; Mrs Harry Wilson; and an adopted daughter. She was a consistent member of the M E Church. The funeral is from the residence at Bedford & Centre streets with Rev Richard Norris presiding and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

FULLER 07 Apr 1890 Mrs Capitola Fuller, wife of Charles L Fuller of 22 Broadway and a daughter of John N Kane of this city, died on Saturday (5 Apr) of typhoid fever. She was 29 years of age and leaves her husband and several sisters and brothers.

GEORGE 24 Mar 1890 Mrs Euphemia George of Lonaconing, aged about 60 years of age, died following an illness of several weeks. She has been a member of the Presbyterian Church.

GLESSNER 26 Aug 1890 Mrs Annie Reinhard-Glessner, 40 years of age, died yesterday of consumption. She was the daughter of Mrs Emma Reinhard and a sister of G A Reinhard, W A Reinhard, and Mrs Nelda, wife of Jacob Bender of this city. She was born 30 Jun 1850 and was married on 30 Jun 1870 to Mr George Glessner, a tinner and stove dealer of this city. She leaves 5 daughters, Emily, Lula, Clara, Georgia, and Mary. The funeral is at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church with interment in the cemetery connected with that church.

GOLDSBOROUGH 04 Feb 1890 Mrs William Goldsborough died at the residence at South Branch near Oldtown yesterday. She was 40 years of age and leaves a husband and little girl. The deceased was a daughter of Catherine Twigg, who died about 1 ½ years ago.

GRAHAM 04 Feb 1890 Dr Thomas J Graham, a nephew of Thomas Johnson who is the father of the Johnson Brothers Lumber of Frostburg, shot himself at his home 3 miles west of Frostburg yesterday. He was originally from Frederick City MD, but had lived here for the past 40 years. He was married twice, his last wife, Miss Duke from Frederick City, died from paralysis about 6 months ago. He leaves 7 children- 5 boys and 2 girls. He was 59 years, 6 months, and 29 days of age. The funeral is tomorrow with interment in the Johnson Grave yard, 4 miles west of Frostburg.

GUNNING 05 Feb 1890 Roseanna, wife of James Gunning, died yesterday at her home in Eckhart Mines of pneumonia. She was born in Strongtown, Indiana Co, PA and was 67 years of age at her demise. She was ill only a few days. Interment will be in Frostburg.

HAMILTON 09 Jul 1890 Rosetta Hamilton, a daughter of Emmanuel Hamilton of the B&O roundhouse, died at her father's residence, 227 N Mechanic Street. She suffered last winter from a severe grippe attack which developed into consumption. The body will be interred tomorrow at Piney Grove, Mr Hamilton's former home.

HAMILTON 26 Nov 1890 Eva Hamilton was pardoned by the N J Courts where she was imprisoned for intent to kill Mary Donnelly, her nurse, who interfered in an argument between Eve and husband Robert Ray Hamilton. The case was intensified by a baby Beatrice, who was purchased to hoodwink Robert Ray to be his own at divorce proceedings. Last August, the body of Robert Ray Hamilton was found floating in a river and circumstances pointed to suicide. In his will, he left a yearly sum to baby Beatrice but disregarded Eve in the will, whereupon, she filed a caveat to the will which is currently pending.

HANSELL 12 Mar 1890 John M Hansell died yesterday at his home near Frostburg of paralysis at age about 57 years. He was born and raised near Frostburg. He leaves a wife and several children.

HARTSOCK 16 Jul 1890 Mrs Amy Hartsock died at her residence at the stone house in Flintstone last evening, age 77 years. She had been walking in the yard, complained of feeling ill, and expired in the house in the next hour. The funeral is from the Fairview M P Church.

HARTSOCK 22 May 1890 Mrs George Hartsock residing on the Bedford Road, 4 miles out was buried yesterday at Zion Cemetery, Rev J W Finkbiner officiating.

HEIBNER 20 Dec 1890 Mrs Heibner died yesterday afternoon of apoplexy at her residence on Polk Street. She was the widow of Daniel Heibner, who died in the razing of the McNamee Pottery Shop on Polk Street a few years ago. She leaves 4 married daughters; Mrs Charles Shaw; Mrs John Smith; Mrs William Harrison; and Mrs William Miller and 18 grand children. The funeral is tomorrow from the German Lutheran Church with Rev Brethause and burial in the German Beneficial burying ground on the Baltimore Pike.

HENSELL 31 Jan 1890 Mrs William Hensell died last evening at the home of her mother-in-law, Mrs Hensell, No. 1 Wine Street of typhoid fever. She was the daughter of John Growden, a prosperous farmer and after the death of her parents, she came to the city and gained employment as a domestic. Eight months ago, she married William Hensell, who since then treated her in a shameful manner and has since deserted her, leaving her to beg for food and was taken with typhoid. She was at the home of Mr Perry Deetz when her condition worsened and she was removed to the home of her mother-in-law and Dr Brace was called. He diagnosed the disease from which she died, despite the care and nursing of Mrs Hensell, her mother-in-law.

HEPBURN 24 May 1890 Mrs Henry Hepburn of Lonaconing died yesterday of membranous croup. She leaves a husband and 5 small children.

HIGH 17 Mar 1890 Mrs Sallie A High died last Saturday (15 Mar) of consumption and was buried in the family plot on the Pollock farm near North Branch. Mrs High was the daughter of J W H Pollock and had been married twice and leaves 4 children.

HOBLITZELL 03 Mar 1890 Thomas J Hoblitzell of this city died today at the residence on Decatur Street of consumption after suffering for sometime past. He was the 5th son of Mr Thomas Hoblitzell who died suddenly in the city some 12 years ago. He was 37 years and 22 days of age and followed his father in the harness business on Mechanic Street until his death. The funeral is Wednesday at St Patrick's Church with Father Brennan officiating.

HODEL 06 Jan 1890 Mrs Mary A Hodel, wife of Joseph A Hodel, aged 49 years of age, died yesterday at her residence N Centre Street from the grippe. She was born in Germany on 30 Aug 1840, and came to this country at age 19, and has lived in this city for 38 years and is survived by one daughter. The funeral is from the home tomorrow with a high mass at Sts Peter & Paul Church and burial in the cemetery connected with that church.

HOFFMAN 24 Jun 1890 Mr Leonard Hoffman, died yesterday at his residence 1 Highland Street of cholera morbus. A widower with 4 adult children he was about 70 years of age. Children are: John, at McKaig's Foundry; Richard, a boiler maker; Maggie, wife of John Wolz; and Catherine, wife of John Smith a farmer at Myersdale. He was a member of the German Lutheran Church.

HOFFMAN 06 Mar 1890 John Hoffman died this morning at his residence 269 N Centre Street following a lingering illness of 2 months from cancer of the stomach. He came to this city and engaged in the butchering and grocery business for several years. He leaves his wife and several grown children. Funeral from the residence on Sunday.

HOFFMAN 05 May 1890 Mrs Hoffman, a widowed lady aged 75 years, died at her residence at Goodman Alley. She is a member of the St Peter & Paul Catholic Church and will be buried tomorrow.

HOFFMAN 24 May 1890 Mrs John C Hoffman died at her residence on Samllwood Street. She was a lifelong Cumberland resident and was a daughter in law of Christine Hoffman. Burial is in the German Lutheran Cemetery with Rev Dr Close officiating.

HOUSER 03 Mar 1890 Mr Jesse L Houser, aged 22 years, a brakeman for the B&O, died yesterday at his residence on Maryland Avenue of typhoid fever from which he suffered for the past 3 weeks. The funeral is tomorrow from the house with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

HUGHES 15 Aug 1890 Mrs Louisa Hughes, age 79, relict of the late Joseph Hughes, died this morning at her residence at 261 N Mechanic St. The funeral is tomorrow.

HUMBIRD 27 Dec 1890 Mrs Sarah A Humbird died at her residence on Frederick Street yesterday after a month of illness. Sarah A McKee was born in PA in 1820, came to Cumberland in 1837, married John Humbird in 1839 and was married for 50 years before his death in Jun 1890. Surviving are John J Humbird of city; Jacob Humbird of Manns choice PA; and Mrs Clay Swartzwelder; Mrs Annie Devries; Mrs Lydia Hitchcock; and Mrs Robert Morris. The funeral is from the residence with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

JAMESSON 14 Apr 1890 Piedmont WV- Mr Florian DeEsta Jamesson, age 23 years, the 4th son of J S Jamesson of Westernport was buried in Philos Cemetery beside his mother who had been deceased 14 years. He was born in Oct 1866 and his mother was a Miss Parker of Eckhart. He was educated at St john's Academy in Annapolis MD and he worked for the 1st National Bank in Piedmont as a cashier. He suffered from Bright's disease which caused him to cease work 3 weeks ago. Attending the funeral was his father and two of his brothers, the 3rd is Dr Jamesson and could not be reached in the West; and sisters, Mrs John T Edwards of Cumberland; Mrs Willie Miller of Piedmont; and Misses Daisey and Molley Jamesson of Piedmont. He was born at Hergfield Germany on 07 Jul 1827 and came to America in 1857, settling in Sandusky Ohio for 2 years and then removing to Frostburg and has lived here since. He had been confined to his bed for 4 weeks prior to his death. He leaves a wife and 13 children, 3 girls and 10 boys. The funeral is Thursday with burial in the Jewish cemetery on the Baltimore Pike in Cumberland.

JEWETT 13 Jan 1890 Barrellville- Walter Jewett, aged 56 years, husband of Minnie R Jewett and a son of Otis P Jewett, former of New York, died (11 Jan). A wife and 2 children survive. Burial is from the residence with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

KEADY 02 May 1890 Mr George Keady, 86, died today at his residence on the National Pike, 6 miles west of the city of cancer of the head. The funeral is Sunday from the Presbyterian church with burial in Rose Hill cemetery.

KEAN 11 Jan 1890 Mr Bartholomew Kean, ex-councilman of this city, died of dropsy superinduced by rheumatism after an illness of 3 weeks at his home. Mr Kean, born in Tralee, County Clare, Ireland, in 1829, came to this country in 1848, and worked as a stone mason and was of a family of 14. He leaves a wife, 4 sons, and 2 daughters, all living except for Marshall who died a few years ago. He was 70 years of age and engaged in the grocery business for the past few years. The funeral is Monday from St Patrick's Catholic Church with burial in the cemetery connected with the church.

KENAH 27 Jan 1890 Henry J Kenah died of apoplexy at his residence at Mt Savage in the 63rd year of his life. Born at Castle Martyr, Cork Co, Ireland on 17 Jan 1828, he came to this country in May 1850, working first at Baltimore, and in 1854, came to Mt Savage, working for the C & P RR, working his way up to Master of Transportation. He was the 3rd son of Mr Henry Kenah, a prominent iron manufacturer of Wales, who died in 1850. Mr Kenah and a sister Mrs Pearsoll then came to America, a year ahead of other family members : Mr RL Kenah of New Brighton PA; Mr William Kenah of Pittsburgh; Mrs JH Pearsoll of Watertown NY; Miss Annie C Kenah of Baltimore; and Mrs A B Turner of Mt Savage. He married Miss Grinlinton of England and has 5 children : Harry E; Herbert L; Bessie Harrison, wife of J Brooks McGann of Cumberland; Minnie; and Sallie; and a step-daughter, Mrs Kate Uhrig of Baltimore. The funeral is Wednesday at the Protestant Episcopal Church with burial in their cemetery.

KILCOIN 21 Oct 1890 Mrs Winifred Kilcoin, wife of Bernard Kilcoin, died yesterday at her home on the Williams Road. She was born in County Sligo, Ireland about 70 years ago and came to this country with her husband in 1855. She leaves 3 sons, one of which is Luke Kilcoin of Bedford, and 1 daughter, all grown; and a sister and a brother in this area. The funeral is tomorrow from St Patrick's Catholic Church.

KIRK 14 Apr 1890 Mrs Agnes Kirk, wife of James Kirk, died this morning at the residence 316 N Centre Street of childbirth complicated by typhoid fever. She is the step-daughter of F M Gramlich Sr and leaves her husband and 4 young children; the youngest 3 weeks old. The funeral is held at St Patrick's Catholic Church and burial in the cemetery connected with that church.

KIRKPATRICK 05 Apr 1890 Mr Frank Kirkpatrick, age 14 years, an orphan living with grandparents was accidently shot and killed in Newark OH while shooting blackbirds. His remains were brought here and funeral services will be held from the grandparents home, Mrs Taefel on Polk Street and interment in the German Lutheran Cemetery. (Article is ½ page column).

KLOPP 27 Oct 1890 Mrs Klopp, aged 89 years, died yesterday at the residence of her son-in-law Anton Holzen of 95 N Centre Street. She came from Germany with her husband a number of years ago, residing on a farm near the National Pike, west of the city. Upon the death of her husband in 1889, she came to Cumberland to live with Mr Holzen. The funeral is tomorrow at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

KOERNER 07 Mar 1890 Mrs Elizabeth Koerner, wife of Joseph M Koerner, died yesterday at her residence on N Centre Street, aged 70 years. She had been in ill health for 2 years and confined to her bed for the past several months. Her husband and 6 children survive: Harry T; Sidney F; and Misses Ida and Laura; and from the first marriage to Mr Jackson, 2 daughters, Mrs Johnson and Mrs Christy. The funeral is from the home with Rev R Norris assisted by Rev McCullough and Rev George H Noch of Baltimore and burial in Rose Hill cemetery.

KREADY 14 Aug 1890 Mrs Sarah J Kready died at "The Home" on Tuesday last (12 Aug) in her 71st year of age, death due to old age. The funeral was yesterday from the home of her son on Centre Street with Rev Moffatt officiating and interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

LAFFERTY 15 Jul 1890 Mrs Lafferty, wife of the keeper at Allegany Grove Campgrounds, died of consumption on Saturday (12 Jul). She was in failing health for the past year but was able to keep up with her housework. Services were be held at the Young Peoples Temple, a memorial edifice on the campgrounds and was largely attended.

LIPPOLD 21 May 1890 Mr William Lippold died at his residence on Greene St of a spinal and brain infection. He was in his 40th year and leaves a wife and 4 children. Also, May 23- Mr Thomas Lippold was born in 1846 and married a Miss Chockey of Sand Patch PA. He was well known as a stone cutter. The funeral is from the Sts Peter & Paul German Catholic Church with a Solemn Requiem Mass officiated by Rev Father Felix and burial in the cemetery connected with the church.

LITTLE 06 Feb 1890 Mrs Cara Urilla Little, wife of Robert W Little of the Little & Sons jewelers, died today at her residence, 146 Baltimore Street, after a brief illness of typhoid fever. She was in her 27th year of life and was the daughter of Dr Alphonso Wetmore of Clinton IA. She married Mr Little in 1883 and leaves her husband and a daughter Ida Kate, 3 years of age. Also survived by her parents, Alphonso & Mary Wetmore; 2 sisters, Mrs George Small of St Louis MO; and Miss Katherine; also; a brother, John Wetmore, both of Clinton IA. LITTLE 21 Jan 1890 Mrs Marie Catherine Little, widow of the late Samuel T Little, died at her home this morning on Bedford Street of consumption in her 54th year. She had suffered for two years and was confined to her room since December. She was the oldest daughter of Jesse Korns and married Mr Little on 22 Mar 1853 and has 9 children to survive: Eula; Jesse Robert; Samuel; Charles; Ruth; Frank; Walter; and Ralph, and 2 children deceased. The funeral is from the home 79 Bedford Street and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev Richard Norris officiating.

LOEBER 17 Oct 1890 Mrs Elizabeth Loeber, widow of Henry Loeber, died at her residence 303 N Mechanic Street of asthma from which she suffered for several years. Sons William Loeber, a real estate agent in McKeesport and Louis Loeber of this city survive her. LOWNDES 02 Apr 1890 Mrs Louisa L Lowndes, widow of the late Richard T Lowndes died yesterday at the home of a daughter Mrs Eloise Roman. Mrs Lowndes was born in Oldtown, a daughter of James & Mary Black. The family moved to Cumberland in 1825 and in 1832 she married Mr Richard T Lowndes of the firm L & RT Lowndes, mercantile. Her husband died in 1844. She leaves 2 daughters, Mrs Eloise Roman, the widow of J Philip Roman and Mrs Elizabeth T Lowndes, the wife of the honorable Lloyd Lowndes, and a sister, Miss Margaret M Black and a brother, Harry D Black. The funeral is Friday at Emmanuel P E Church and interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

LUECKER 11 Jul 1890 Peter Luecker died this morning at his residence 70 Frederick Street of typhoid fever. A wife and 2 children survive. MANSFIELD 22 Jul 1890 John Mansfield, father of Capt. Mansfield of the C&P RR, died at his home in Westernport of Bright's Disease of the kidneys, aged 82 years. The funeral will be held Tuesday at St Peter's in Piedmont.

MAREAN 04 Aug 1890 Mrs Margaret Marean, wife of Everett Marean the Transportation Master of the C&P RR, died at her residence 64 Columbia Street on Sunday (3 Aug) of apoplexy. She had been ill for some time with asthma. She was in her 48th year and was married at Oxford Furnace NJ, but moved here to Cumberland when her husband became an agent for the B & O RR. She leaves her husband and 3 boys and 4 girls. She was a consistent member of the Presbyterian Church. The funeral is from the home and burial is in Rose Hill cemetery, with Rev J E Moffatt officiating.

MARTZ 19 May 1890 Mr John Martz, age 32 years, died of heart disease at his brother's residence at Hickory Alley. The funeral is tomorrow from Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church.

MAUS 20 Jan 1890 Mrs Frank Maus, nee Smith, died at her home on Glenn Street yesterday from typhoid fever after suffering from it for a week. She leaves her husband and an infant child. McCARTY 29 Dec 1890 James McCarty passed away at his residence at Black Oak Bottom, 12 miles west of the city in his 87th year following an illness that left him an invalid for the past year. He married Miss Margaret McCulloh of Frostburg who survives with one son, William J McCarty of this city. The funeral is Wednesday with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

McCLINTOCK 21 Mar 1890 Dr H C McClintock of Flintstone died of consumption yesterday at his residence, age about 41 years. The funeral is tomorrow from the home of a brother-in-law, Henry Blocher at 34 Columbia Street. Born in union City PA, he married to Rosa B Saurles of Baltimore,12 years ago and she and 2 children survive. Brothers, Milton of Pittsburgh and William L of Titusville were with him at his death. Burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery.

McCULLOH 10 Jan 1890 Capt. J Floyd McCulloh died at his residence on Washington Street yesterday, aged 56 years, from a hernia caused in the war. He was born in Frostburg, the eldest son of Mr John McCulloh and a nephew of Hon. Thomas G McCulloh. At the outbreak of the war, Capt. McCulloh organized a company of infantry in Frostburg and Cumberland and enlisted in 1861, serving in the 2nd MD PHB for 3 years, when he mustered out, re-enlisted and served for the duration of the war. In 1862, Capt. McCulloh received his injury during a charge on Hunter's Raid against Lynchburg VA. He also saw action in the vicinity of Buchannon WV under Generals Kelly, Cook, and Schenck. The funeral is tomorrow at Emmanuel Episcopal and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery, Rev Haverstick officiating.

McELFISH 18 Mar 1890 Mrs Amanda McElfish, wife of Norman McElfish, died yesterday at her residence in Beans Cove of cancer of which she suffered for a number of years past. McFARLAND 25 Nov 1890 Mr John McFarland Sr, about 70 years of age, died Sunday (23 Nov) at his residence in Eckhart. He was born in Scotland and came to Allegany County shortly after marriage where he has since lived and raised a large family. He leaves a wife and 3 sons; John of Lohrtown; William of Lonaconing; and James of Frostburg; and 4 daughters, Mrs Wesley Lohr; Mrs William Sleeman; and Mrs Thomas Fatkins of Vale Summitt; and Mrs William J Miller of Eckhart. MICKLE 26 Sep 1890 Mr W P Mickle of Ellerslie, aged 67 years, died today. He had fallen upon a bucket 2 months ago and bruised his side and suffered from inflammation and since then he became weaker until death set in. He leaves a family of 6 children: Mrs Frank P Naughton and Miss Ida Mickle of Cumberland; Major J F Mickle of Bedford PA; and Misses Annie, Mary, and Mr Jacob Mickle of Ellerslie. Burial will be in Bedford PA.

MILLER 23 Aug 1890 Mrs Urban Miller died yesterday of the typhoid fever and congestion of the brain at her home on Valley Street, aged 48 years. She married Urban Miller in 1861 and 12 children were born of this marriage, 9 living, 5 boys and 4 girls. MILLER 17 May 1890 The funeral of Mrs C G Miller of Barton, who died Friday (7 May) took place at the family residence yesterday. Mrs Miller was a remarkable fleshy woman weighing over 200 pounds and was sick only 3 days before her death. The body was kept to await the arrival of a son from Washington State. The body was embalmed by Louis Stine of the Cumberland Furniture and Coffin Company and when buried she looked natural as life.

MINKE 17 Oct 1890 Last evening, Mr Anthony Minke, a local painter, died at his residence on Paca Street from a complication of diseases. The funeral is tomorrow from Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church with a mass and burial is in the Sts Peter & Paul Cemetery.

NOONAN 24 Mar 1890 James Noonan of the Union Mining Co, Mt Savage, died this morning of pneumonia. He was the brother of Thomas Noonan of Cumberland. He was in his 58th year and leaves a wife and 6 children.

OHR 25 Jun 1890 Mrs Mary Ohr, the mother of Policeman George Orr and of John J Ohr from the rolling mill, died at age 80 years. Born in Montgomery Co, MD in 1810, she moved to Cumberland in 1836 and married John T Ohr, who died in the cholera epidemic of 1853. Her maiden name was McCardell and has one brother near Winchester WV. She made her home with son George at 98 Highland Street where the funeral will begin with services in Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church and burial in the cemetery connected with the church.

PERRIN 05 Jul 1890 Lennox Perrin, aged 75 years, died yesterday at his home in Flintstone. He was well known in Allegany County and a pioneer settler in Flintstone, living here many years. The burial is in IOOF Cemetery, Flintstone.

PIPER 13 Jan 1890 Mrs Caroline E Piper, wife of Samuel L Piper, the dispatcher of trains from Mt Savage, died of heart disease at her home, aged 54 years. She was a sister of John A Sills and a cousin of James Reid, the street superintendent. She was found by her daughter in a sitting position on a chair in her room. Rev Baker will conduct services with burial in the M E Cemetery.

POOLE 19 Nov 1890 Sarah Poole, relict of Thomas Poole, died at her residence on Decatur Street last night following a lingering illness in the 63rd year of age. She leaves 3 children: Mrs Clara Metz and Benjamin C and Thornton Poole-all of this city. The funeral is tomorrow from the home on Decatur Street with Rev Richard Norris and burial is in Rose Hill Cemetery.

PORTER 15 Dec 1890 Dr James Madison Porter of Frostburg, died this morning from a stroke that he received in May 1888. He was born at "Rose Meadows" farm, 3 miles from Frostburg on 14 Apr 1817 and was the 7th of 8 children of John and Catherine (Glissan) Porter. His father was the 7th son of John Porter who was born 24 Jun 1783 in PA and was a farmer and who died 05 Feb 1863. He was married 3 times; 1st , Mary Ellen, daughter of Minor Gibson of VA, who bore 2 children, Glissan Porter of this city and Mrs Lucy E Teddy of Piedmont; the 2nd marriage to Miss Rebecca McCarty of Iowa who died in 1858; the 3rd marriage to Miss Sallie A French of Wheeling WV who survives with the above mentioned children. The funeral is from the home with Rev father Clark of Frostburg and Rev father Manning of Lonaconing and burial in the family plot at "Rose Meadows" farm.

PORTER 04 Jan 1890 John H Porter of the west side, formerly of Mt Savage, died yesterday of cancer of the stomach, aged 36 years. He was a brakeman for the C & P RR. His wife and her 2 sisters, the Misses Wunder, survive. Services are from the Sts Peter & Paul Church with burial in the cemetery connected with the church.

PORTER 10 Mar 1890 Mr James Porter, an aged citizen of Eckhart, died there on Saturday (8 Mar) of general wearing out. He was a soldier in the late war and not actively engaged in business since.

POWELL 12 May 1890 Mr David Powell, aged 51 years, died Saturday (10 May) at the boarding house of Mrs Smith on Vinegar Hill. His remains will be shipped to Pennsylvania for funeral and burial.

PRICE 05 May 1890 Bennie Price, aged 17, a son of William H & Julia Price of Grant Street, Frostburg was killed at the Hitchins mine by a fall of roof coal on Saturday (3 May). The funeral is today from the English Lutheran Church.

PUGH 04 Feb 1890 William Edward Pugh of this city died this morning at his residence, 29 Hanover Street of a complication of diseases. He was 19 years of age and the son of S J and Margaret E Pugh. He had been ill for 3 weeks. He was born in this city on 02 Oct 1870, and was employed at the post office. He was the youngest of 2 sons and 2 daughters and a member of the Epworth League of the Centre Street ME Church. Burial is in Rose Hill cemetery.

RAWLINGS 26 Mar 1890 Mr Jacob Rawlings, an aged citizen of Allegany County died yesterday at the residence of a son, James Rawlings on W Baltimore street, aged 71 years. He was taken ill 2 weeks ago with inflamation of the bowels from which he later died. He came to this country in 1840 and has lived here since working as a blacksmith until the canal was finished. A wife and 6 children survive. The funeral is tomorrow from the son James' residence with Rev J W Finkbiner of the English Lutheran Church and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

RICE 17 Nov 1890 Addison A Rice, son of John Rice, died 30 Oct at Ellerslie of typhoid fever, aged 19 years, 10 months. His body was interred in the old family graveyard.

RICKER 16 Jul 1890 Mrs Henrietta Ricker, aged 44 years, died yesterday of a complication of diseases. The funeral is today with interment in the Greenmount Cemetery. She leaves a large family of children, all of whom have found homes in families of sympathetic supporters and friends.

ROBINETTE 16 Dec 1890 Frank Robinette, aged 23 years and 10 months, the son of John B Robinette of Town Creek, died on 10 Dec of consumption and was buried on Friday at the IOOF cemetery Flintstone , Rev Passo of the M E Church presiding.

RODENHAUSER 15 Dec 1890 Mrs John Rodenhauser died Saturday (13 Dec) of an attack of apoplexy, aged 50 years, 2 months and 23 days. She leaves a husband, 4 sons, and 2 daughters and sisters, Mrs Mary Shanz of McKeesport; Mrs A C Scherr of Maysville WV; and Mrs Doris Werkmeister of this city. The funeral is from the German Lutheran Church with burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery.

ROWE 31 Oct 1890 William Rowe, aged 79 years, died last night at his residence 33 Polk Street after an illness of 3 weeks. Surviving are his wife and 3 children; Miss Maggie Rowe, teacher; Miss Mazie Rowe; and Frederick Rowe, employed at the Landwher & Glick Co planing mill.

SAMMONS 08 Mar 1890 Thomas Sammons died this morning following an illness of 11 weeks from the grippe which attacked him on Dec 15th. Mr Sammons was born at Balenstoe, Co Galway, Ireland in 1813, and in 1836 he came to America, settling in Elizabethtown PA for 2 years. In 1838, he came to this city residing his final 52 years. Early in life, he was a contractor on the C&O Canal and for several years past, he and his only surviving daughter Mary, kept a grocery store on S Mechanic Street. The funeral is Monday from St Patrick's Church with Father Brennan officiating.

SCOTT 27 Jun 1890 Mrs John Scott of Cumberland died while out riding with her sister, Mrs John Hart. Their horse began to run away on Bowery Street towards the Willison's Planing mill where it was stopped and quieted. Mrs Scott, who had been ill with heart problems, took ill and died shortly thereafter. She leaves a husband, one son, a mother, four sisters, and a brother. She was 30 years, 10 months and 25 days of age. The funeral is from her mothers home on Broadway with burial on Sunday at Allegany Cemetery.

SEAY 14 Apr 1890 Mrs Amanda M H Seay, wife of Charles A Seay, died Saturday (12 Apr) at her home 67 Bedford Street, age 54 years. She was born in Frostburg on 2 Jun 1836, moved to this city at age 6, married Mr Seay in Feb 1855 and was the mother of 10 children, 7 surviving along with her husband. She was a faithful member of the Centre Street M E Church.

SHERIDAN 03 Mar 1890 Thomas E Sheridan died yesterday at his residence 58 Decatur Street of typhoid fever after an illness of 3 weeks, aged 39 years. His wife, Miss Fannie Reynolds and a son 4 years of age survive. He was a businessman in the coal and lumber trade and a member of the St Patrick's church from which he will be buried on Thursday.

SHRIVER 04 Oct 1890 At Atlas Arkansas on 26 Sep 1890, Henry Shriver, a former Cumberland citizen and the father of Anthony Shriver of South Cumberland died. He was the former owner of the Shriver Mansion on Black's Hill and was in his 83rd year. Burial in Arkansas.

SHUCK 20 Aug 1890 Thomas Shuck died of old age this morning at his residence 279 N Mechanic Street in his 75th year. His father, Joseph Shuck was born in York PA in 1787 and moved to Cumberland in 1790 when Thomas was only 3 years of age. For 81 years his father followed the career as a carpenter. In 1816, Thomas was born and followed the trade of his father. About 2 weeks ago, he became confined to his bed. Of his 8 children, 2 are deceased and 6 still are living: George E of Sandusky Oh a supervisor of the railroad; John W of Washington MO; James A of Pittsburgh; Thomas J of Washington DC; and Annie M and Indiana V, both of this city. The funeral is from the home and burial in Rose Hill.

SHULTZ 22 May 1890 Mr Philip Shultz, aged 73 years, died Wednesday (21May) of general debility at his home near this city. He leaves a family of grown children. The funeral is from the German Lutheran Church with burial in the cemetery connected with the church.

SISCO 21 Mar 1890 Peter Sisco, an old resident of this city and once the foreman at the B&O shops, died last night at his residence on Independence Street. He was a blacksmith with his shop at Water & Greene Streets. The funeral is from the Bedford Street Baptist church with Rev W T Jones and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

SIVILL 03 Jan 1890 Mrs Eliza Sivill, widow of the late Reson Sivill and John S Willison, died yesterday at the residence of the son-in-law, John H Rice, 152 Columbia St, from asthma and bronchitis. She had suffered from the disease the last 6 years and was bedridden the last 4 days. She was born near Frostburg and lived in Cumberland for the last 50 years. She was 79 years of age and leaves these children: Mrs John H Rice; Mrs S A Marvill; Mrs J N M Brandler; George Sivill - all of this city; and Jacob Willison of Frankfort WV; and Henry Williamson of Bedford Co PA. The funeral is tomorrow from the residence on Columbia Street and burial at Rose Hill Cemetery.

SMALL 10 Mar 1890 Mrs Mary A Small, wife of Eli Small, died at her residence on Decatur Street, aged 74 years. She had suffered from rheumatism for the past few years and confined to her bed for the past 2 weeks. She and her husband came from Frederick 37 years ago. She leaves her husband and 3 children: Fannie, William and Charles, all grown. The funeral is Wednesday from the Bedford Street M P Church with Rev McCullough officiating and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

SMITH 05 May 1890 Peter Smith, a well known carpenter of this city was instantly killed by a shifting engine of the Pennsylvania RR in the yard of the Georges Creek and Cumberland RR Co. while picking up coal with his 2 little children. The body was taken to 181 Madison Street and the funeral took place today from the St Patrick's Catholic Church.

SPRIGG 15 Aug 1890 The death of Mr Henry Landis of Washington County recalls a famous local court case for which he is the last living juror. The case was over the killing of William O Sprigg on 11 Feb 1852 by Robert Swanson. Sprigg spat in the face of Swanson who then obtained a pistol and shot Sprigg. The jury voted not guilty because a threat of violence existed and the killing was self-defense. (Article is ½ column).

STINEBOUGH 22 May 1890 Today, Adam Stinebough a foreman at the McKaig stone crushing plant in the Narrows was killed by a passing train of the C&P RR. He with his wife, and 5 children had moved here from Arkansas only 6 years ago. His children include a boy age 18 down to a girl age 2 years. The funeral is from the home on Cecelia Street with interment in Rose Hill Cemetery.

STOVER 06 Aug 1890 Mrs Harriet L Stover, died of old age at her residence 17 N Liberty Street, aged 87 years. She was born and died in the same house. Her maiden name was Shryer and was a aunt of druggist T W Shryer. In 1825, she married Solomon Shryer of Frederick Co and from this union 7 children were born: John Stover and Mrs Ellen Clark of Cumberland; Shryer Stover of Charlestown; and Mrs Rose Krauss of Reading PA survive. In 1850, she joined the English Lutheran Church. The funeral is from the home with Rev J W Finkbiner and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

SULLIVAN 06 Feb 1890 Mr James Sullivan died today of old age in his 81st year. He was born and raised in Cumberland. He was married 2 times and of the 4 children of the first marriage, only Miss Ella Sullivan survives. Those deceased are: Mrs R I Morris; Mrs C W Brengle; and Mrs Mary Roper. The funeral is from the home on S Mechanic Street with Rev Richard Norris and Rev Finkbiner officiating and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

SWARTZWELDER 16 Sep 1890 Mrs Harrison Swartzwelder died this morning at her home. She had been in failing health since the birth of her last child. She suffered a severe hemorrhage on Sunday from which she did not recover. She was born 26 Sep 1845 as Mary Carvallo Shriver, the 6th child of the late Joseph Shriver and Henrietta J Clausten Shriver. She was educated in Washington DC and in March 1874, she married Harrison Swartzwelder. Three children were born of that union; Henrietta, Alice and Joe, who died in 1884. The funeral is Wednesday from the residence. (6 paragraph article).

THOMSON 15 Aug 1890 Mrs Ellen Thomson, widow of the late Emmanuel Thomson, died at her residence 328 N Centre Street last night of typhoid fever. She was a tenant in the Gerdeman property fire on July 4th and contracted a cold and died of the effects of this and typhoid. The funeral is from St Patrick's Catholic Church.

THOMSON 25 Aug 1890 Mrs Frances Ann Thomson, the mother of Mrs Daniel A Wineow, died of advanced age of 70 at the of her son-in-law, Daniel A Wineow, 82 Bedford Street. She was born in Farquier Co VA in 1820, moved to Woodstock VA after the death of her husband, and 19 years ago moved to Cumberland, living with her son-in-law. She had been confined to her bed for some time now. The funeral is from the home and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, Rev Moffatt officiating.

THRUSTON 17 Apr 1890 Mr George Buckner Thruston, 27 years of age, died last evening. He was the youngest son of Bessie M and the late George A Thruston and died of the prevalent fever last night at the home of his mother on Decatur Street. He was born 09 Nov 1862 and is survived by his mother and sisters, Mrs A H Boyd; Misses Sue and Violet Thruston. The funeral is from the M P Church with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

TOPPER 22 Dec 1890 Mr A J Topper died yesterday at his residence on Baltimore Avenue. He was born in Everett PA on 28 Feb 1834, came to Cumberland in 1858, engaging in the liquor business at a saloon at Centre & Harrison Sts. Prior to coming to Cumberland he lived in Frostburg and married Miss Willison, sister of A J Willison, who died Nov 1865. He then married, Miss Annie McGill of this city who survives him with 3 daughters and 1 son. The funeral is from the home with Rev Richard Norris of the Centre Street M E Church and burial in Rose hill Cemetery.

VAN HORN 09 Aug 1890William Van Horn, who resided with his parents at 26 Orchard Street, met with a fatal accident while passing between cars in the B & O yards. He was 15 years of age and worked at the brick yards of Harrison Swartzwelder in South Cumberland. He had drawn his pay and was proceeding home.

VICKROY 29 Nov 1890 Mrs James R Vickroy died at her home in Cumberland Valley on 15 Nov in her 75th year. She leaves a husband and 6 children: William T Vickroy of IN; Mrs William Boor of CO; James R Vickroy of Terre Haute IN; Mrs Charles Sanders of Cumberland; and Lucy E and D C Vickroy. She was buried from Bethel Church with Rev Long officiating.

WAGNER 20 Jan 1890 Mrs Catherine Wagner died yesterday from her home on N Centre Street of old age in her 81st year. She leaves 2 children; Mrs Lewis Spindler and Mr John Wagner of this city. The funeral is tomorrow morning with a solemn mass at Sts Peter & Paul Catholic Church with Rev Father Felix officiating and burial in the cemetery connected with the church.

WEIBEL 08 Jan 1890 Mrs Gus Weibel, nee Brophy, died at the Allegany County Insane Asylum today. She was sent to the Spring Grove Asylum in Baltimore in March 1888 and was later transferred to this facility when it opened where she became gradually worse, physically and of her affliction.

WEISKETTLE 19 Mar 1890 News is received of the death in Newark OH of Charles A B Weiskettle of pleuro-pneumonia last night. He was the eldest son of Charles Weiskettle, a machinist for Ladew Tannery. He left the city about 10 years ago and married a Miss Mamie Chester and leaves her and a young girl 5 years of age. He was a day clerk of the Warden house in that city. His brother Alexander Weiskettle leaves for the funeral tomorrow.

WEMPE 27 Oct 1890 On Friday evening past (24 Oct), Mrs Wempe, living on Vinegar Hill, died of old age, past 80 years. The funeral is tomorrow from Sts Peter & Paul with interment in the cemetery connected with the church.

WIELAND 10 Nov 1890 Philip Wieland died this morning of old age in his 89th year. He married a Miss Volweiler and had 5 children: Peter Wieland of Pittsburgh; Frederick & Peter Wieland of this city; Mrs Armstrong of Chilicothe OH; and Mrs Spice of Cumberland.

WIGFIELD 28 Apr 1890 Miss Adeline Wigfield, aged 20 years, a daughter of Jno B Wigfield of near Flintstone yesterday morning.

WILHELM 10 Jul 1890 Jacob Wilhelm died on Saturday (5 Jul) at Cook's Mill of a brief illness. He was the 2nd child of John & Mary Wilhelm, pioneer settlers of Hyndman. He was 67 years, 7 months, and 21 days of age. The funeral was Sunday at the Hyndman M E Church.

WILKINSON 13 Jan 1890 Mrs Sarah Wilkinson died yesterday from catarrh of the stomach from which she suffered for 2 years. She was born in Baltimore on 28 Aug 1828, her maiden name being Smith. In Sep 1844, she married Jabez Wilkinson, also of Baltimore and in 1845, they came to Cumberland, residing here since. Mr Wilkinson is a foreman at McKaig's foundry. Seven children were born of this union, 2 dying while young, and the husband and 3 sons and 2 daughters survive: Joseph T -foreman at Warren Glass Works in Uniontown; John T; George C; Mrs Thomas Wickland and Mrs John T Fey- all of this city. The funeral is from the residence 94 N Centre Street, Rev Norris officiating at the Centre Street M E Church and burial in the German Lutheran Cemetery.

WILLARD 24 Dec 1890 Mr J P Willard, died at his residence at Baltimore & Ellen Sts. Born in Frederick County on 22 Apr 1817, he married Lydia Joanna Allen on 05 Dec 1939, who has since died leaving one daughter, Clara Lydia, the widow of D M Everstine. In May 1854, he married Miss May Butts who survives with these children: Ida Belle, wife of Thomas J McKee; Florence May and Elizabeth Willard of Cumberland; Oscar A, Charles D, and Ralph Willard of Cumberland. He worked for the B & O RR and later for the U S Government as storekeeper of the Clark's Braddock Distillery . The funeral is Friday from the English Lutheran Church with Rev Finkbiner.

WILLIE 02 Jun 1890 James S Willie, "Uncle James Willie", died at the residence of Mrs Muris on Cecelia Street last Saturday (31 May), aged 71 years. He was a pumper at the rolling mill. The funeral is from Kingsley M E Church, Rev W E Bird officiating and burial in Rose Hill cemetery.

WILMOTH 09 Aug 1890 Mr Barney Wilmoth of Sand Patch, who dropped dead at Myersdale PA of unknown causes, was a son of Mr A Wilmoth of Bedford Street in this city. He was 31 years of age and was married to Miss Osborne of Mt Savage but had no children. He was the superintendent of his father's lumber business. His remains were brought to the city and burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The funeral is to be from his father's home 18 Bedford Street with Rev J W Finkbiner of the English Lutheran Church.

WILMOTH 29 Oct 1890 Mrs Margaret Wilmoth, wife of Alfred Wilmoth, died at the residence 88 Bedford Street today of severe cancer from which she suffered for the past 2 years. Born in Germany in 1831, she came to this country, was married in Pennsylvania to Alfred Wilmoth, and of this union had 6 children, 2 of whom are deceased. She leaves her husband, one son, and 3 daughters; Mrs William Cook of Johnstown; Mrs F M Brinham of Glencoe PA; Mrs William Kornhoff of this city; and Harry Wilmoth of Wellersburg PA. The funeral is today from the home with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

WILSON 05 Jul 1890 Mr Edward Wilson, a resident of Town Creek in the lower part of Allegany County, died Thursday (3 Jul). He was a resident there for many years and was well known in the county.

WILSON 15 Nov 1890 Mrs Mary R Wilson, wife of James W Wilson, an associate judge of Orphan's Court, died at her residence near Rawlings yesterday after a lingering illness. She was the eldest daughter of Alexander & Levinia King and the mother of 3 children; Alex K of Toledo OH; Robert and J W Wilson of this county. Interment is at the family grounds at Ellerslie.

WINEOW 28 Jan 1890 Mrs Carrie V Smouse Wineow, wife of James D Wineow, died at her residence on Baltimore Avenue today. She was the eldest daughter of John J and Sarah E Smouse of Hazen and married James D Wineow in 1884, moved to the city and produced 2 girls; Gladdius May 2 ½ years and Helen Carleton, 4 months. She had been confined with remittent fever for 3 weeks and died of heart failure, aided by weakness. Mrs Gladdius Dodd of Omaha NE was at her bedside at the time of death. Services are to be held at the home with burial in the Smouse lot in Rose Hill Cemetery.

WINGERT 04 Jan 1890 Mr Jerry Wingert of Wellersburg died yesterday of old age, 85 years of age. He will be buried Monday by Rev J W Finkbiner.

WINGHERT 28 Feb 1890 Mrs Sarah E Winghert, wife of James H Winghert, died at her residence on N Mechanic Street yesterday, aged 44 years of a lingering illness of consumption. She was born in this city a daughter of Jacob H Buckley. The funeral is tomorrow from the home with Rev Richard Norris of the Centre Street ME Church officiating and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

WITT 06 May 1890 Mr Josiah Witt, aged about 60 years, formerly a prominent lumber dealer and owner of considerable land in this city at one time, died at his new home in Pittsburgh where he has lived for some years. He leaves his wife and son Cyrus Witt, who is engaged in merchandising in Pittsburgh. The funeral is tomorrow from the English Lutheran Church with Rev J W Finkbiner and burial in Rose Hill Cemetery.

WRIGHT 07 Mar 1890 Mr John Wright, who died Wednesday at the Sylvan Retreat and the funeral is today in Lonaconing with burial in the Old Coney Cemetery. He was born in Tipton, Staffordshire, England and came to America at 17 years of age and settled in Lonaconing. For some time now he was subject to fits and was sent to the Asylum 6 months ago. He was married to Eliza James and she bore him 17 children, all deceased except Joseph, Albert, and Fannie.

ZIMMERLY 08 May 1890 Louisa Zimmerly, a widow in the 66th year of her age, died at the home of a daughter 46 Maryland Avenue. The funeral is tomorrow from the Kingsley M E Church.
