M. ST. JULIEN DE TOURNILLON OBITUARY: 1857

M. St. Julien de Tournillon, a distinguished Frenchman, long resident of Louisiana, died in Assumption Parish, on the 24th ult., at the age of 87. M. DeTournillon was born in Lyons and educated in Paris, where he resided at the epoch of the Reign of Terror, and being forced by popular prejudice to emigrate, he repaired to his patrimonial estates in Hayti, where he resided until forced to take refuge from the insurrection there. He went to Louisiana in April 1804. he was connected by marriage with some of the oldest and most distinguished American families.

He was the step-father of Hon. Nicholas P. Trist, special minister to Mexico, who negotiated the treaty of Guadaloupo d'Hildaigo. He was also the father-in-law to Dr. Thomas Cottman, who, in a recent visit to Russia, was honored by many flattering attentions from the late Emperor, who tendered him a commission, with high rank, in the Russian army. Mrs. Tournillon's first husband, Col. Trist, was an intimate friend of President Jefferson, and was the first Collector of the Port of New Orleans, receiving this appointment from Mr. Jefferson soon after the acquisition of Louisiana. Col. Trist fell a victim to yellow fever early in July 1803. His oldest son married the oldest grand-daughter of Mr. Jefferson. Very much of Mr. Jefferson's private correspondence remains with this branch of the family.
