THE DIXON YEARS: a passage
by Orman Wright

THE DIXON YEARS is a fascinating memoir by Dixon, KY native Orman Wright.

This coming-of-age story tells of the return to his birthplace of a young boy, an only child, and his need to adapt to a strange new world after spending the first ten years of his life far to the north of Dixon, KY. In that cold land the seasons were different, voice inflections and slang usage were different; everything was different.

The author's physical and emotional struggles to adjust, the liaisons he develops with his town and country cousins and nurturing and indulgent adults soothes, somewhat, his passage through adolescence. The world slowly becomes more compatible. His playmates become good friends. He learns to talk like a native. Girls are discovered with all their exciting differences. He begins to take chances again, to test the limits.

This rich tale contains many intriguing portraits of local citizens. The book appeals on several different levels: as an adventure story full of romance and surprise; as a fascinating biography of a boy struggling toward adulthood and the allies he makes in the struggle; and, finally, as a superbly crafted history of one boy's adaptation to a strange, yet beguiling, new world.
