by Frances Bassett PriceRichard Savage was born in Winchester, Virginia, April 25, 1802. His father, Dr. Joseph Savage was a surgeon in the Second Virginia Regiment in the Revolutionary War. His mother was Jane Murray of the Dunmore clan.
The regiment of Dr. Savage largely consisted of young boys trained as Home Guards by Baron Von Steuben, who found the state entirely defenseless when he was sent into it to direct military operations. However before he had completed their training, they were ordered to the front to assist the dire need of worn out older soldiers. Dr. Savage was made prisoner at the battle of Charleston and never recovered from the effects of the imprisonment. He came into Kentucky about 1814 to look after his military land and soon died Jan. 31, 1815.
Richard came into the Providence locality in 1820 with his old sister Mrs. Eleazar Given. Later he built a residence and trading post where "Providence Hill" now stands. He married Ann Rudy of Henderson. He removed to Union county, Kentucky in 1850 where he died. He is buried in the cemetery at Caseyville, Kentucky.
