James Johnson married (1) Sarah 'Sally' Ann Phillips (abt 1803 Union Co KY-bef 1827), dau of Andrew Phillips and Elizabeth 'Betsy' Parker, 06 Feb 1819 Union County, Ky. Sarah is buried at the Steve Hammack Farm, Webster Co. They had two children:
1. Andrew Johnson - b 20 Nov 1820; d 29 Aug 1889 Webster Co married Harriett Cullen. Bob Johnson is a descendant.
2. .Martha Johnson - b 19 May 1823; d 03 Sep 1823.
James Johnson married (2) Marina 'Rina' Nichols, dau of William Nichols and Lavinia Godwin, 28 Jan 1827, Hopkins Co, KY. 'Rina' was b 01 Feb 1807 NC and d. 08 Sep 1858 Hopkins Co, KY; she is buried at Johnson Cemetery, Webster Co.

She is buried at Big Hill Cemetery in Providence. Sarah Ann Nichol's father Lazarus was a brother to Marina Nichols, the second wife of James Johnson. James Johnson and Sarah Ann Nichols had the following 7 children:
