VA George Monroe is probably the son of William Monroe whose wife was possibly Nancy (or Ann) Wroe. This William Monroe, a Revolutionary War soldier originally of Westmoreland Co. VA, was pensioned at age 72 in Frederick Co. VA, and died with will about 1844 in Warren Co. VA. William's will refers to lands given to George in Kentucky; an 1848 land dispute in neighboring Hopkins Co also identifies George as William's heir. Wm. Monroe bought Union Co. land in 1830, and Hopkins Co. land around 1840. Eliza B. Monroe, another identified heir of Wm., apparently had land in Union Co., as George periodically paid tax on it for Eliza and husband James Monroe of Breckinridge Co. KY.
George Monroe m. Jane Monroe (likely a cousin) Jan. 26, 1821, Frederick Co. VA. His marriage to Nancy Eddings Dec. 25 1840 in Union Co. was a second marriage. Children of George's first marriage are not certain; John W. Monroe (m. Mary Jane Murphy, Jun. 16 1845, Union Co., d. 1848) is one identified son; other likely children are Charles D. Monroe, Christopher B. Monroe, and James Monroe. Information on this family submitted by Becky Rice.
