About seventy descendants of Willes and Finis Tompkins, brothers who were born and raised at Slaughters, gathered for the event. Finis and his wife Grace and Willes and his wife Ollie had twenty-three children.

Following the death of Finis Tompkins in 1956, the families agreed to gather once a year with the first reunion set for 1957. Descendants number one hundred thirty today.
