An article in the March 12, 1998 Sebree Banner has as its headline "Church To Observe 150th Anniversary." With the Banner's permission, here are some abstracts from the article. On March 20, 1848, a small group of people, led by Elders Whayne and Hatchett, met in Poole, Kentucky, for the purpose of constituting a Baptist Church. With the intention of building something that would last, they drew up Rules of Decorum and an Abstract of Principles that set the tone for a work that continues today.
On March 15, 1998, the Poole Baptist Church will celebrate its 150th anniversary. Among the former pastors of the church are: Melvin Williams, Bob Walter, Alan Kazaa, Billy Hamlin, Guy Gordon, Gifford Berry, Tabor Best and Wilbur Collins.
Through the years the church at Poole has seen many changes. Now in its third building, the name has also changed three times. Originally known as the Church of Jesus Christ of United Baptists at Shady Grove, the name was later shortened to Shady Grove Baptist Church and finally, in 1939 the church voted to call itself by its present name.
Missions have been an important part of the Poole Baptist Church since its beginning. As early as July, 1848, delegates were elected on an annual basis to associational meetings. A member of Green Valley Baptist Association since its founding in 1958, Poole Baptist Church was a part of Little Bethel Association in its earliest days, then for a while was a part of the Ohio Valley Association.
While some practices of the early years are no longer carried out, such as excluding members for non-attendance or acts considered offensive to the church, the desire to build something lasting that will have an impact for Christ is as strong today as it was 150 years ago.
