Hancock Reunion Held August 13
By: Louise Fleming

The annual Hancock reunion was held Sunday, August 13, in the fellowship hall at the Onton Methodist Church. A large number of descendants of pioneers William Lewis and Sarah Bradshaw Hancock enjoyed the sharing of genealogical materials, old pictures, fun, food and fellowship.

Lewis Hancock was born in Goochland County, Virginia in 1792. Together with his parents he emigrated to Franklin County, Kentucky in 1806; served in the War of 1812; and in 1819 married Sarah Bradshaw, daughter of Benjamin and Elizabeth (Carter) Bradshaw. In the fall of 1824, William Lewis and Sarah and their five young children (all under the age of 6) moved to Christian County where he farmed. In 1850, the family moved to the Onton area where they remained for the remainder of their lives. William Lewis and Sarah had 55 years of domestic bliss, during which time seven sons and eleven daughters were born unto them; thirteen of them lived to be grown and married; ten of them were land holders and lived within an area of ten miles square, the parents residing in about the center.

By 1880, Lewis and Sarah had 115 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren. By 1900, this family, including the in-laws, was one of the largest families in the state of Kentucky.

Mrs. Wilma Branson Patterson, age 90, was the oldest present at this year's reunion and Philip Logan Sizemore, age 2, was the youngest. Lorena Elizabeth Price of Lake Wales, Florida traveled the farthest distance.
