      REVOLUTIONARY WAR PENSION REQUEST

DECLARATION STATE OF TENNESSEE

                                        County of Williamson

                                WASHINGTON D.C. FILE #S.I. 664

On this 4th of October,1882, personally appeared before me in open court before the worshipful; Tabor Owen, Wright Stanley  and Mr. Johnson ESQ'S  Ples and quartely.

Henry Garrett Aged 78, being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath make the  declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of Congress, passed June 7, 1882

That he entered  the service under the following officers and served herein stated. That I, Henry Garrett was drafted in Februay 1778 in Fauquier Co, State of Virginia to serve during the term of  six months to fill the vacancies caused by the deaths in th 3rd Virginia Regiment commanded by Col. Heath and in Capt. John Blackwells's company. Lieut. Peyton, John Hawkins from Alexandria was our adjutant in said regiment and  from the best of my recollection we marched from said county by Joseph Black well, a brother of  my Capt., to Valley Forge where I joined headquarters under the command of General George Washington. General Wolford was our brigadier general and to the best of my recollection there was one company in our regiment commanded by Capt. Peyton.  I  cannot at this remote period recollect to particularize all the places we marched to but I was at the battle of Monmouth  in the state of New Jersey in June, I think 1778.  I recollect that I was one of the party that was called out the night after the battle to attack the ememies pickett guard but failed as of sunup and returned to our encampment a little after day break.  My best recollection is, the next place we marched to was the  White Plains in the state of New York.  I was there taken sick and carred on board of a vessel to what was called the high lands of New York at a village that I think was called High Hill on the North River. In the summer or  fall of that year we were marched from there to headquarters at Phi--------- in New Jersey, about the first of the winter, to the best of my recollection, near  which place I was discharged from the service. While on the way to Virginia to be discharged, in consequence of my inability to keep up with the company, by reason of bad health, my twelve months of service having expired.  I also entered the service of my country as a volunteer soldier in August of 1780 to my best recollection, in Fairfax County and for said State, for the term of six months under  the command of Capt. Mason, James Nesbitt, Lieutenant and James Adams, Ensign.   I do not remember the field officers except General Green who was our commander in chief.  I marched from Fairfax County Virginia through North Carolina and South Carolina on Peedee River, about the Cherow Hills and there continued until our term of service expired. On our return to Virginia to be discharged we guarded a batty of British and Tory  prisoners to the Yadkin River where they were put under the care of other troops to be marched to Abermarle Court House VA.  We were compelled to change our course before we got to Salisbury N.C. in consequence of there being a considerable British force there and by reason of high water.  We were discharged from the service  in February 1781 by my Captain, William Mason.  My discharge in each term of service was either lost or mislaid, never thinking I would have use for it. Neither do I know of any person by whom I can prove the afore said service. My resident at the time I first enlisted was in Fauquier County Virginia and the second time it was in Fairfax County.  I resided in Virginia seven years after the war, then I moved to North Carolina, there for twenty-one years. Then I moved to Kentucky.  After remaining there for seventeen years, I moved to Williamson County, Tennessee. I was born as my father informed me on 18th March 1754 in Fairfax County Virginia.  I do not have record of my age and being unlearned.

He, the said Henry Garrett doeth hereby relinquish every claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the present and declare that  this name is not on the pension list of the agency of any other state whatsoever.

Sworn and subscribed the day and year aforesaid. Sworn in an open
