Pat, I saw your post on both the Babb and Crocker forums and wondered if you might have any info on a Martha Crocker. My husband's 2nd great grandmother was Martha Ann Crocker who married John Lawrence in January 1860 in Wake Co NC. I have reason to believe that Martha Crocker Lawrence was the same Martha Crocker who was living in the household of John and Penny Crocker in the 1850 Wake Co NC census. Does any of this sound familiar to you? I have worked for a number of years on this family and it has proven very difficult to trace. Patrick, As I indicated earlier, my husband Jim's line through his maternal grandfather (LEANDER WILSON) has been very difficult to trace. There are conflicting stories about where he was born and even what his name was! I rather "burned out" after working so intensly on the Lawrence line and decided to take a breather before tackling the Crocker/Babb connection. Seeing your post spurred me on to get going again. I'd appreciate any info on John and Penny Crocker and their children that you are willing to share. The following is what I have been able to piece together. LEANDER WILSON was born 14 February 1876 to ARDELIA LAWRENCE, the daughter of JOHN and MARTHA ANN CROCKER LAWRENCE. By 1883 ARDELIA had married a Mr. Hill and had another child Rosa Hill. On 13 January 1887 ARDELIA LAWRENCE HILL married Thomas J. Wilson in Wake Co NC. They subsequently had an additional four children. Rosa Hill and the man we knew as Leander took the name Wilson, but I have not been able to find any records of a legal adoption. As they lived out from Raleigh in the country, they may have just changed their names, by-passing any legal adoption.  MARTHA ANN CROCKER, born about 1832, was the daughter of JOHN and PENNY BABB CROCKER. The info that I have, which came from census records, indicates that they were all born in North Carolina. (I had heard that John Crocker was from Pennsylvania, but no record that I have indicates that.) MARTHA married JOHN (J.A.) LAWRENCE on 18 January 1860 in Wake Co NC. (They are listed in the 1860 Wake Co census as both being age 24.) MARTHA died sometime between 1865 and August 1870 when the 1870 Wake Co census was taken. MARTHA and JOHN LAWRENCE had at least two children: ARDELIA, born in 1860 and JOHN SIDNEY, born in 1865. They are living in the household with their father in the 1870 Wake Co NC census. Living next door with the Wood? family is 22 year old Henry Crocker. In the 1880 Wake Co NC census JOHN SIDNEY (or Sidney John) LAWRENCE age 15 is living in the household of his aunt and uncle, Elijah and Feraby Lawrence Mills. I have been ubable to find either Ardelia, or her father John in the 1880 census. "Family tradition" has them going to Misissippi where Jim's grandfather Leander was born, but I have checked Mississippi records and have not found them. "Family tradition " also gives Leander's last name as Patrick or Kilpatick or Fitzpatrick! I don't know the parents of JOHN LAWENCE, but I do know about his siblings, thanks to the estate papers of his sister Feraby Mills. All the census records for John and his siblings indicate that they were from North Carolina. So if they were from VA, we had some lazy census takers! If you want the info on the Lawrence siblings, let me know. I have lots of questions. Were there any estate papers for John Crocker? How did you find the years of their deaths? How did you discover the Robinson Co TN connection? In one post you mentioned Johnson Co NC. Were they there too? Since you have info on MARTHA's siblings, you may know the identity of the 2 year old girl living in the household with Martha and John Lawrence in the 1860 census. Mary Porter Byrum, 95, of Orlinda, died Friday, Dec. 28, 2001, at her home.  Funeral services were conducted Monday, Dec. 31, at 11 a.m. at the Orlinda Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Vance and Rev. Greg Love officiating. The interment followed in the Orlinda Cemetery.

Mrs. Byrum was born Sept. 21, 1906, in Orlinda to the late Robert L. and Lizzie Stringer Porter, and was a direct descendant of the founder of Orlinda, H.J. Crocker.

She graduated from Orlinda High School and attended Georgetown University in Georgetown, Ky. where the Mary and Jewel Byrum Scholarship is now established.

She was a life-long member of Orlinda Baptist Church and a charter member of the Byrum-Porter Senior Center in Orlinda.

She had much love for the city of Orlinda and its citizens. Her legacy was providing the new senior center.

Mrs. Byrum was preceded in death by her husband, Jewel Byrum, and by her son, Bobby Edward Byrum, who died in infancy.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Anna Laura Porter of Austin, Texas; devoted nephews, Mike Byrum and wife, Linda of Springfield; Ralph Brewer and wife, Peggy of Adairville, Ky.; devoted nieces, Sara Leech and husband, Dan of Hendersonville, Janette Garbee Amos of Etowah, Suzanne White and husband Paul, of Austin, Texas, Debbie Eger and husband, Jim of Dallas, Texas, Bettye Pupo-Walker and husband, Henri of Nashville; devoted friend and caregiver, Geneva Brizendine of Orlinda; several other nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were the deacons of Orlinda Baptist Church. Honorary pallbearers were her faithful caregivers, Geneva Brizendine, Sara Pitt, Mary Stewart, Frances Durrett and Jean Crabtree.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Orlinda Baptist Church or to the Byrum-Porter Senior Center. All donations can be sent c/o the Robertson County Funeral Home 2201 Memorial Blvd., Springfield, TN 37172.

Maude's first husband was Braddock Parrish he was killed in WWI. Her second was Norman P. Rogers my Great Grandfather in 1919. Norman and Maude lived with Jim and Lydia when they first married. Her third was Eddie Crenshaw in 1935. The last was Mr. Vass. I don't know about 4 and 5.. Lydia Crocker raised Walter. Jim was a black-smith for many years. He worked at Yates black-smith shop (maybe). He was a night watchman in 1919. He was put in the mental hospital after he had wandered away from home carrying a shot gun in downtown Raleigh.   Jim Crocker always said at supper, if you where talking when it was time to eat "Let the victuals stop your mouth".

We have a problem with the year he was born. But he was old maybe 70 but Lydia says he was 90.The doctor said he had hardening of the arteries.
