A citizen of the Schweitzer Section and Liked by all who knew Him

Alfred SADLER, 60 years old, died at his home in the Schweitzer section Thursday night after a lingering illness from tuberculosis. He was a man of integrity, liked and respected by all who knew him, and a consecrated member of the Baptist church. He is survived by his second wife and a son by a former marriage, who is in extremely delicate health. Funeral services were conducted Friday by Rev. Carey E. Will and burial made in the Chisholm burial ground.

Miss Belle Sadler, 54 years of age, died at her home in the Lake Spring community Saturday night.  Miss Sadler was a member of the Baptist church and a most estimable woman.  Her entire life was spent in the section where she died and she had many friends who deeply mourn her passing.  She is survived by six sisters.  Funeral services were conducted Monday by Rev Carey E Witt.  The remains were interred at the Chisholm burying ground.

Callie Saddler, age 87 of Louisville, died Saturday night at a Louisville Nursing home. Funeral services will be held this morning at 11:00 at the Booker Funeral Home with Rev Ray S Gulliam officiating. Burial will be at Hillsdale Cemetery. A native of Simpson Co, he was the son of the late Lee and Mary Ell Caldwell Saddler. Survivors include his wife, Nobie Bush, Louisville and one son, James Saddler of Louisville.

Funeral Services For Miss Sadler - Miss Connie Lenore Sadler, 21, died at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Shelby Goddard, last Saturday following a brief illness.  Funeral Services were conducted at the Green River Cumberland Presb. Church in Logan Co, Monday afternoon with Rev. Virgil Lawrence officiating. Burial was in the Church Cemetery. Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Sadler, one brother, Joe Alford Sadler of Simpson Co: and a grandmother, Mrs. Connie Moore of Logan Co.  Pallbearers were J. C. Darden, Charles Justice, Shelby Goddard, Lilburn Justice, Floyd Darden and Winfred Williams.

Funeral services for Frank W. Sadler, 73, farmer, who died Tuesday, December 14, 1948 at his home in 31-W south of Franklin after a long illness, were held Wednesday afternoon, December 15 at 1:30 o'clock at Booker's Funeral Home with Bro Carey Witt officiating.  Burial was at Peden burying ground. Mr Sadler was born in Simpson Co, a son of the late Rev. M. F. Sadler and Mrs Sarah Lovelady Sadler. Mr Sadler was a member of the Lake Spring Baptist Church.   Surviving are one sister, Mrs J. W. Finn of Simpson Co, three brothers, C.C. Sadler Indianapolis, Indiana, Will Sadler Illinois, Spurgeon Sadler, Decatur Illinois and a number of nieces and nephews.

Harry G Sadler, 79, of Bowling Green, died 22 Aug 1995 at Greenview Hospital in Bowling Green after a brief illness. Funeral services were held Aug 24 at the Hatcher and Saddler Funeral Home in Glasgow. Burial Followed in the Glasgow Municipal Cemetery. A Simpson county native, he was the son of the late Charles and Myrtle Bush Saddler, president of the Hatcher Sadler Funeral home, a graduate of Western Ky University, he played basketball under coach E A Diddle, and in 1939 he lead the team in scoring and 3 straight championships. He also set a state scoring record in his Senior year. He taught school at Center High School, a Navy Veteran of WW 2 and a member of the Glasgow Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Shirley Saddler, 3 Stepchildren, Teresa Martin and Bruce Martin of Glasgow, and Tina Garrison of Tn, 6 step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister Louise Saddler and his previous wife Madaline Hatcher Saddler.

Mr. Henry M. Sadler died at his home in the Blackjack country last Saturday, after a lingering illness of pulmonary trouble.  He was one of the best-known farmers and citizens of his section.  He was the son of Mr. J. M. Sadler and was 37 years old.  The deceased was a Knight of Pythias, being a member of the Warren Lodge at Woodburn.  He is survived by a wife and one child.

Miss Ira Sadler died at the Southern Ky Sanatorium September 6. She was desperately ill when taken to the institution for a operation and owing to her weakened condition, the surgeon declined to operate. She was a devout and consecrated member of the Hillsdale Methodist Church and beloved by all who knew her. Besides her parents, she is survived 4 brothers, Charley, Willis, Fletcher and Callie. Funeral service were conducted by Rev Ogle and burial followed in the Church Cemetery at Hillsdale.

Mr. J. W. Sadler, son of Mr. James Sadler, died at the home of his father near Lake Spring last Sunday.  He was 32 years old and unmarried.  He was an obedient, dutiful son from his youth up, and it is said of him that he was never away from home at night that his parents did not know of his whereabouts.  He was well liked by all who knew him.  After appropriate funeral services conducted by Mr. James Yokley, his remains were interred by House and Son, undertakers of this place in Chisholm graveyard last Monday.

James B Sadler, 76, died at his home near Hillsdale, Wednesday night of last week from Influenza he was a consecrated member of the Methodist Church and a splendid man and citizen. A wife survives him. Funeral services were conducted at Hillsdale Methodist Church Friday by Rev Ogles, and burial made in the church cemetery.

Jesse G Sadler, age 59, a former resident of Franklin, died May 1 at his home in Walnut Creek, Ca after a brief illness. He was employed at the Liverman Research Company, Nuclear Energy Division of Ca. He was the son of the late Willis and Pearl Sadler. Survivors include his wife, Connie Sadler of Ca, and a number of cousins, including Mrs Tom Frease of Franklin.

Former Citizen Dies in Indianapolis - Miller Sadler, age 68, Passes Away After An Illness of Several Weeks - Friends her have received news of the death of Miller Sadler at his home n Indianapolis. Me Sadler was a son of the lamented Rev M F Sadler, a beloved Baptist Minister who lived 3 miles east of Franklin. The immediate cause of death was pneumonia, which was induced from an attack of Influenza. He was united in marriage with Miss Susie Your, a sister of Rev John York, am eminent Baptist Minister of New York. Mr Sadler was a splendid man and citizen and was loved and respected by the citizens of his adopted home. Beautiful floral offerings, which covered the casket, attested to the loved sustained for him by friends and associates. Besides a wife he is survived by a brother, Frank Sadler and a sister, Mrs J W Finn of Simpson County. Funeral services were conducted by Rev L C Trent, pastor of the Woodruff Place Baptist Church and burial made in the Cemetery of Indianapolis.

Mrs. Mary R. Sadler died at the home of her son, near Woodburn, on the morning of Thursday, May 12, 1910.  She had been confined to her room for ten months.  She was born in Logan Co, August 14, 1837 and at the age of 20 married Levi Sadler, and they lived together happily until death separated them April 22, 1880.  Five Children were born to the union, one of whom died when small, and the only daughter died April 7, 1905.  Three Sons survive her.  She professed faith in Christ in early life and united with the Baptist Church and lived in strong faith until her death.  Funeral services were conducted at Blackjack Church by Rev. S. H. Pope followed by burial in Church Cemetery.

Death Removes Christian Woman - Mrs. Nancy Sadler Dies at Her Home on North College Street Wednesday Morning - Mrs. Nancy Sadler, 78, wife of William B. Sadler, died at her home on North College Street Wednesday morning after a protracted invalidism. She was a consecrated Christian and beloved by all who knew her.  Mrs. Sadler was born in the Lake Springs section and had lived her whole life in Simpson Co.  Besides her husband, she is survived by four sons, Lewis and Virgil Sadler, Chicago: James Sadler, Mobile Alabama, and Fred Sadler of this city.  Funeral services will be conducted at the House and Bryan Mortuary this (Thursday) morning at 10 O'clock by the Rev. G. G. Graber with burial at Providence Cemetery.

Mrs Nora Sadler died of tuberculosis at her home near Schweitzer Tuesday, September 16.  Mrs Sadler was a most estimable woman.  Her maiden name was Miss Nora Perry.  She was born Allen Co and was thirty-one years of age.  The funeral and burial took place on the following day at the Chisholm burying grounds.  Mrs Sadler is survived by her husband, Alfred, and three small children.

Mrs Sara Anne Sadler died at her home, 2 miles east of Franklin, after an illness of 25 years due to complications of a disease.  She was 76 years of age, a member of the Baptist Church.  Mrs Sadler is survived by her husband, Rev. Manson Fielding Sadler and ? Children. The Funeral was conducted at the family residence by Rev. Ed Stevens.  Interment followed at the Cedar Grove (Peden) Cemetery.

William B. Sadler Dies After Illness At Fountain Head - Funeral services for William Bryant Sadler, age 97, who died last Saturday were conducted Sunday afternoon at the Booker Funeral Home. Mr. Sadler died at the Fountain Head Sanatorium after a long illness.  He was probably Simpson Co's oldest citizen.  The Rev. J. V. Case Jr, pastor of the Franklin Baptist Church officiated.  Burial was at Providence.  Surviving are 4 sons: Fred and Lewis Sadler, both of Franklin, Virgil Sadler, Chicago, and James Sadler, Mobile Ala.

William F. Sadler Dies At Age 71 At Local Hospital - Funeral services for William Fredrick Sadler, age 71, were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at Booker Funeral Home.  Burial was at Greenlawn.  Mr. Sadler died Saturday at the local hospital after a long illness.  A native of Simpson Co, he was a retired plumber and a World War 1 veteran. Mr. Sadler was the son of the late William B. Sadler and Nancy Lou Sadler.  Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Rebecca Johnson of Franklin, James Sadler of St. Louis, MO, and 6 grandchildren.

Funeral services for William W. Sadler, 67, Lewisburg, were held yesterday at Lewisburg Funeral Home. Burial will be at Sharon Grove Cemetery.  Sadler, a native of Simpson Co, died Monday at the Logan Co Hospital, Russellville, after a long illness. He was the son of the late Alfred and Nora Perry Sadler. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Katherine Moore Sadler; one son, Joe Sadler, Russellville, one sister; Mrs. Mary Lee Gann, Franklin, and four grandchildren.

Funeral Services for Willie Saddler, age 79, who died Sunday, were conducted Tuesday afternoon at the Booker Funeral Home. Mr Saddler died at his home on Cemetery St after a long illness. The Rev Hugh Gregory of Nashville officiated. Burial was at Greenlawn. A native of Simpson Co, Mr Saddler was the son of the late Lee Saddler and Ellen Caldwell Saddler.  Surviving are his wife, Mrs Pearl Garrett Saddler, a son, Jesse Saddler, Horsehead, NY, and 3 brothers, Fletcher Saddler, Louisville, Charles Saddler, Glasgow and Callie Saddler, Simpson Co.

Charles Alton Slack, 70, of Liberty, N.C., died Feb. 13 at his residence. Graveside services were held Feb. 16 at Blue Door Cemetery in Mitchellville, Tenn. Brother Hank Johnson officiated. Crafton Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. Slack was a native of Simpson County and a retired farmer. He was the son of the late Hugh Paskel Slack and Mattie Mae Slack and husband of the late Loretta Payne Slack. Survivors include three daughters, two sons; two brothers, James Slack of Russellville and Talmadge Slack of Portland, Tenn.; nine grandchildren, one great grandchild, several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services For Asher G Smith Conducted Friday – Funeral Services for Mr Asher G Smith, retired farmer, who died at his home here last Wednesday, were held last Friday. Mr Smith, age 87, died after an illness of a week.  Services were conducted at the House-Bryan Mortuary.  The Rev Tom Lewis, pastor of the Lake Spring Baptist Church and the Rev Bailey F Davis, Baptist Minister of Franklin officiated. Burial was at Greenlawn Cemetery. A native of Simpson Co, Ky, Mr Smith was the son of the late DeWitt Clinton Smith and Segis Price Martin Smith. He was a member of the Shady Grove Baptist Church and was affiliated with the Simpson Benevolent Masonic Lodge for 63 years.  Surviving are his wife Mrs Nannie Meador Smith; 3 sons, Henry Smith, Notley G Smith and William Smith, all of Franklin; a daughter, Miss Gladys Smith, also of Franklin, 3 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Douglas Smith, 63, Dies In Louisville - Douglas Smith, native of the Hickory Flat community who mov­ed to Louisville 28 years ago, died last Thursday in Louisville. He was 63. Mr. Smith was blind the last 12 years of his life. He became seriously ill four months before his death. The body was returned Saturday to the House and Bryan mortuary. Burial was Sunday afternoon in the McKendree Chapel church cem­etery. The Rev. Taft Thrasher, pastor of the Franklin Methodist Circuit, officiated during the ser­vices at McKendree’s Chapel. Mr. Smith was a son of the late Martha Henderson Smith and Stephen A. Douglas Smith. The deceased is survived by his wife, Mary Page Smith, three sisters, Mrs. C G Garrett, Frank­lin, Mrs. C B Jernigan, Louisville and Mrs. Delbert Perdue, Portland, Tenn Pallbearers were Leland Butt, Virgil Butt, Vernon Ray Butt, Charles LeVon, Preston McClendon and Norman Wims.

Captain E. M. Smith died Sunday morning of senility at his home near Pilot Knob, this county. He was 80 years of age, a devout member of the Presbyterian Church and a native of Simpson County. Mr. Smith was a brother of the late Quingle Plutarch Smith, one of the wealthiest farmers of Northwest Simpson County, who bequeathed a large portion of his estate to the Presbyterian Church at Pilot Knob, and a son of the late John and Nancy Sloss Smith. He was the last surviving member of his family. He was never married. Mr. Smith was one of the most highly educated men in this section. He was an ex-Confederate soldier having served with distinction through the entire civil war, at the close of which he went to Mexico. There he remained a number of years. He spoke Spanish as fluently as the natives. On his return he located in Butler County, but several years ago he returned to Simpson County and lived on a farm adjoining the one of which he was born and reared. The funeral took place at his late residence Monday, being conducted by Rev. L. F. Goodwin.

Communicated.) On January 5, 1909, the Reaper whose name is death, called from the walks of man, one of Simpson’s most beloved and substantial citizens, Mr. GEO. W. SMITH, age 65. After funeral services at home, conducted by his pastor, Dr. S. N. DICKEN, the remains were laid to rest at Sulphur Spring church where he had been a member since boyhood... He leaves a wife, one daughter, MRS. GEO. BARNES, four grandchildren and a host of friends and relatives to mourn their loss...

Death Removes Excellent Citizen – Clay Smith, 76 died at his home in the Hickory Flat section Sunday night following an illness of several weeks. A few days prior to his passing, Mr Smith had apparently recovered from an illness and was able to be about his duties. However he suffered a relapse and the end came as stated above. Mr Smith was the son of pioneer citizens Clinton Smith and Mrs Price Martin Smith and they were the parents of 3 others sons, Kenny, Will and Asher. For half a century the quartet of Smith brothers has been in the forefront of the agricultural life of Simpson Count, and were everywhere regarded as men of moral worth; business acumen and high-type citizenship. Mr Smith professed faith in Christ early in life and throughout his long and useful life was a devote, and consecrated Christian. His wife died some years ago and he leaves a son, Henry Clay Smith, Jr; a daughter, Benton Williams, and 2 grandchildren.  The 3 brothers mentioned above are also survivors. Funeral services were conducted at Shady Grove Church at 10:00, Tuesday morning by the Rev H C Adkins, with burial under the auspices of Salem Lodge of Masons, of which he was a member, in Green Lawn.  The pallbearers were Henry Smith, Notley Smith, William Smith, Earl Smith, Clint Smith and E J Horn.

James Stewart Dies at His Home in the County Sunday Morning July 6th

James C. Stewart, aged 51, died at his home in South Simpson July 6 after a lingering illness.
He was a member of the Church of Christ and was loved by all who knew him. He had been engaged in farming and carpenter work since his early boyhood.
He is survivd by his wife and six children, Hubert London, James Edwin, Mrs. Pauline Mayes, Harry Dee, Mattie Lou and Dorothy Stewart, all of this county, and two grandchildren. He is also survived by two brothers, Sam Stewart, Bowling Green, Edgar Stewart of this county, and three sisters, Mrs. Mary Jane Heffington, Mrs. Robert Laney, and Mrs. Homer Craft, all of the county.
Funeral services were conducted July 7 at Tyree's Chapel by Rev. Frank Jernigan, and burial was in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers were John Heffington, Willie and Otis Stewart, Joe Reed Craft, Sylvester and Ather Laney.

Obituary of James Cornelius STEWART

    Date of Death 3 October 1890

His obituary was found glued inside the back cover of a small picture album once owned by his daughter, Melvina Obenia "Bean" Stewart Butler Brown. The album was given to Nancy Pennington Atwood by her mother Mollie Stewart Pennington, another daughter of James Stewart. Nancy Atwood gave the album to Ruth Forshee and her daughter, Sue Cooper. The album is in the possession of Sue Cooper, gg granddaughter of James Stewart, 1464 Rice Hill Circle, Antioch, TN 37013; 615-361-0255;

"Pioneer Gone"

    James C. Stewart whom every man in the county of Simpson knew, died in the winter of his age at his home Friday morning October 3, surrounded by his family and neighbors. He was born in 1815, was therefore seventy-five years old.

    Uncle Jim Crack left a grand legacy to his wife and children worth more than gold or silver, a good name.

    He was perfectly conscious of the approaching doom and was ready to meet the Messenger. His way was clear and unclouded and so testified to all visiting friends.

    The prayer of those who stood around the dying couch, was "may my last hours be like his."

    He was a member of the Christian church. He loved to tell of his experience and his faith in his Redeemer.

    "Blessed be he that cometh in the name of the Lord."

MISS NOBYE STEWART PASSES AWAY

Miss Nobye Stewart, 22, died from complications at her home six miles south of town Tuesday. She was a devout Christian and beloved by many friends.

Besides he parents, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Bessie Hendricks and Miss Lila Stewart, and eight brothers, Otis, Reuben, Willie, Bennett, Laurence, Leslie, Joe and Garland Stewart all of the county.

Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon by the Rev. Tobe Stewart, of Mitchellville, with interment in the Hammond Burial ground.

Services for William Edgar STEWART, 84, Franklin, were this morning at Booker Funeral Home on West Cedar Street. Burial was at Greenlawn.

Stewart died Monday at City-County Hospital at Bowling Green after a brief illness.

A native of Simpson County, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Nolan C. Stewart.

Surviors include his widow, Mrs. Annie Hendricks Stewart; two daughters, Mrs. Carleen Dallas and Mrs. Bessie Hendricks, both of Franklin; eight sons, Otis, Joe, Willie and Leslie Stewart, all of Franklin; Lawrence Stewart, Texas, Garland Stewart, Germany, David Stewart, Florida and Bennett Stewart, Chicago and one sister, Mrs. Homer Craft, Franklin.

Mr. William Swan died at his residence on Madison street at 2 o'clock last Sunday morning. His death, which was not unexpected, came after a long and painful illness... Mr. Swan was 65 years old and for 35 years had been engaged in the drug business in this place... During the Civil War he bore a gallant part on the Confederate side, and retained to his life's end the most loyal affection and interest for his old comrades... At the time of his death, and for several years preceding he was Secretary of the D. C. Walker Camp of U. C. V. He was followed to his last resting place by the surviving members of the Camp. Funeral services were conducted at the family residence last Monday at 9 o'clock and the burial followed at Green Lawn Cemetery. The services at the home were conducted by REV. S. H. LOVELACE, pastor of the Methodist church, of which the deceased was a loyal member. At the grave Capt. P. P. Finn, one of his surviving comrades in the Civil War, and Hon. C. W. MILLIKEN, a life-long friend and admirer, paid glowing tributes to his memory. Mr. Swan is survived by his wife and two children, Miss EVIE SWAN, of this place, and DR. W. E. SWANN, of Clarksville, Tenn.
