"Franklin once was famous as the second-largest mule market in the world".  In 1868 there were 5 carloads of horses and mules which originated at the L-N Railroad station in Franklin.  In 1873, there were 11 carloads shipped from Franklin.  The annual Mule Day Celebration was held in 1939, 1940, 1941 and 1942..... but fell victim to the war and was never revived.  The 1939 celebration was broadcast coast to coast on CBS.  In 1940 event brought between $250,000.00 and $500,000.00  into the county.  The 1941 parade was led by Marjorie Weaver, famous movie star of the day.  "Franklin-Simpson A Picture of Progress" 1819-1975; pg 77-96, complied by Mrs. James Beach, Sr and James Henry Snider
