Quintilla Garth Otwell

Quintilla Garth was born 13 Jan 1801 in Scott County, Kentucky. She was the fifth daughter of John GARTH, hence her name "Quintilla" Her mother, Sarah GRIFFITH, was
John's second wife. Before 1821, Quintilla married William OTWELL (born 11 apr 1798 in Kentucky). William appears in Fayette County for the 1830 census. He owned a
100 acre farm in the 1838 Fayette County tax records. He then appears in Scott County for the 1840 and 1850 censuses. Quintilla died 3 Jan 1852 at (51 years). William
died 18 May 1 858 (60 years). They are buried in the Georgetown Cemetery, Scott County.

John Franklin OTWELL was born 29 Apr 1821 in Fayette County, Kentucky and died in Detroit, Michigan 21 Jun 1908.
Elizabeth Martha OTWELL was born between 1822 and 1825 in Fayette County. She married and had a son named Parker.
(There was a Parker Otwell in Scott County that may have been William's brother).
Son OTWELL was born between 1826 and 1830 in Fayette County.
Thomas S. OTWELL was born before 1829 in Fayette County. He married Anne Matilda STEVENSON.
Martha L. OTWELL was born about 1830 in Fayette County. She married Benjamin DORSEY of Kentucky and they had at
least 3 children: Benedick F., Mattie Otwell and Fannie Cromwell. Benjamin and Mattie are buried beside Quintilla and
William in the Georgetown Cemetery.
Emily OTWELL was born about 1833 in Fayette County. She married Tilford ALEXANDER of Bourbon County, Kentucky on
14 Jan 1851 in Scott County and they had at least 4 children: Quintilla, John R., William Otwell and Thomas. Emily died
between 1860 and 1870 and Tilford remarried.
Mary Ann OTWELL was born about 1836 in Fayette County.
Sarah J.  OTWELL was born about 1839.                                                                                                                     

John Franklin OTWELL

John Franklin OTWELL was born 29 Apr 1821 in Fayette County. On 18 Dec 1944, he married Mary H.  TAYLOR (born about 1821 in Fayette County,) the
daughter of Stark TAYLOR. They take residence in Fayette COunty (1850) census. As early as 1851, John F. ownes a 100 acre working farm in West Nissouri,
Ontario, Canada.  In 1859, within a year of William's death, John F. moves the family to Canada and he becomes a "market gardener" supplying fresh
vegetables throughout Ontario. An article in the  Port Rowen News describes John F., as a "pioneer canner" for his revival of a home canning process that
was popular in the south to the Civil War. Farmers processed fresh picked vegetables in the field using canning operations on horse drawn sleighs. In
1862, they open a cannery near St. Mary's, Ontario. In 1882, the cannery burns down and the Otwell's face a decade of hardships.  Mary dies before 1891.
Eldest son Maurice is committed to an insane asylum in 1889. John F. is convicted of stealing and sent to Kingston Penitentiary in 1893 at the age of
72.  He is evaluated and found to be suffering from senile dementia.  The family returns to the U.S.  John F. resided in a sanitarium until his death
21 Jun 1908 in Detroit, Michigan at the age of 87. He was buried in Ontario.

Children of John Franklin OTWELL and Mary H. TAYLOR

Maurice OTWELL was born about 1845 in Fayette County, Kentucky.  He married Jane ASH in Perth, Ontario, Canada on 13 Jul 1865.
They had 7 children: William Charles, Edwin James, Mary Ellen, Edith Ila May, June and Victoria. Maurice was a salesman, auctioneer,
and inventor.  In his 30's, he suffered epilepsy and eventual insanity.  He was committed in 1889 to St. Mary's Asylum in Ontario and
remained there until his death 6 Apr 1915. Jane later moved to Detroit, Michigan where she owned a boarding house.
John Franklin OTWELL was born in 1866 in Ontario, Canada.  He married Vianna Palestine MURPHREE of Alabama.  They moved to
Louisiana and had on son named Emmit Dewey.  John Franklin was a typewriter repairer.  He died 13 Nov 1941 in Monroe, Louisiana.
