Joseph Kennedy Poague

Joseph Kennedy Poague, the third child of William Poague and Anne Kennedy Wilson, the widow of John Wilson, killed by Indians in Virginia, was born May 8, 1770 in Rockbridge County, Virginia, near Natural Bridge. The Poague family migrated to Kentucky County, Virginia, what is now Kentucky, September 1775. They spent the winter at Fort Boonesboro, moving in the spring of 1776, to Fort Harrod, in what is now Mercer County, Kentucky. September 1, 1778, Joseph's father, William, with sixteen other men from Fort Harrod were on their way to Logon's Station to the South, when attacked by Indians. The riffle fire from the Indians wounded William. He fell from his horse and hid in the canebrake until his friends found him the next day. He was taken back to Fort Harrod where he died the following day. William is buried in the old Fort Cemetery. Joseph was only eight years old when his father was killed. He lived at the Fort with his mother, Anne and his six siblings. His mother being an important figure at the Fort, was given one of the Blockhouses for she and her family to live. Joseph had two stepfathers, Captain Joseph Lindsey, killed by Indians 1882, at the Battle of Blue Licks and James McGinty who died 1806. Anne Kennedy Wilson Poague Lindsey McGinty died 1815 at Fort Harrod, having out lived four husbands.

He moved to Scott County, Kentucky about 1800, living there for the next thirty-five years. He served in the War of 1812. Two of Joseph's children migrated to Marion County, Missouri about 1828. Joseph followed in 1835, to a farm near Palmyra. He brought with him the rest of his family and three slaves that Elizabeth's father had left to her in his Will.
