George Berry Genealogy
George
Berry was born in Virginia, probably Culpepper County about 1759. He
served as a Captain in the Navy during the Revolutionary War and was at the
battle of
Carter's
Landing, Virginia. Before 1783 he married Jane Carter of Virginia.
George moved his young family to Kentucky and settled in Fayette County by
1805 George
Berry
was living on the Elkhorn in Fayette County. He purchased land on Eagle
Creek and with his wife Jane, raised a large family. During his working
years, George farmed,
operated
a sawmill and served as Clerk of the Scott County Court. The obituary
of George Berry was located in the Lexington Observer and Reporter, dated
May 22, 1839
stating
George Berry, of Scott County, Kentucky was born in Virginia around 1761
and was 78 years of age at his death. It is believed he was buried
in the graveyard on the
Berry
Home Place on Salem Road. The obituary of his wife, Jane, appeared
in the Observer on January 2, 1834. Her obituary states she was born
in Virginia around
1765
and died on December 20, 1833 in Scott County, Kentucky. In his will George
Berry, mentions one quarter of an acre of land that was to be kept as a burial
ground.
His
wife buried in the middle and two children buried with
her.
Children of George and Jane Carter Berry
Ellen
Rogers Berry, born November 3, 1783 in Virginia. It is thought
she died in 1819 and believe to be one of the children
buried with her mother in the Berry family graveyard. Ellen was not mentioned in the will of her father in 1834. |
William
Berry, born February 11, 1786 in Virginia. He died on August 27,
1872 in Owen County, Kentucky. William married first
Nancy Musgrove in Mason County, Kentucky on May 23, 1808. William appears in Mason County, Kentucky records as William C. Berry. He was listed on tax list there from 1808-1819. William Berry served in the War of 1812 volunteering in Georgetown in August of 1813. In January of 1835 William Berry of Scott County purchased 656 acres of land in Owen County. On June 4, 1848, William married second to Sally Ann Dawson. For his service in the War of 1812, William received a pension. After his death Nancy applied for a widows pension. At his death William had no known heirs. |
George
C. Berry, born in Virginia on December 1, 1787. He purchased land in
Scott County in 1818 and is listed on the 1820
census there as a single man. Evidently, George moved from Kentucky. When his father wrote his will in 1834 the family had not heard from George for some time. However, a codicil was added to his will in 1838 making George C's portion equaly with his brothers and sisters. |
Jane
Berry, born in Virginia on August 27, 1789 and died in Scott County,
Kentucky on November 17, 1876. Jane married
Thomas D. Vallandingham, who died in Scott County in 1848. Jane died in 1876 and in her will she gave property on Little Eagle Creek to Cyrill B. Vallandingham. Thomas and Jane were there parents of: George L., Thomas C., John Henry, Cyrill B., Mary Ellen, Elizabeth Ann, and Jane Vallandingham. |
Cyrill
Berry, born in Virginia on August 17, 1791. It is believe that
he died as a young child probably in Virginia. He was not named in
his fathers will of 1834. |
Henry
Berry, born in Virginia on September 26, 1793 and died in Boone County,
Missouri on June 20, 1967. He is buried in the
Grandview Cemetery in Missouri. He married Nancy Gibson abour 1825 probably in Scott County. |
Silas
M. Berry, born in Virginia on July 6, 1796 and died in Champaign County,
Illinois on March 23, 1888. Around 1819 Silas
married Sarah Merryman. The obituary of Sally Berry, was in the Lexington Observer ad Reporter, date September 5, 1838 where she was listed as the consort of Col. Silas Berry of Scott County. After her death, he married Susan H. Gano, daughter of Daniel Gano. Silas M. Berry served in the War of 1812 having enlisted in April 1813 in Georgetown, Scott County, Kentucky. Children of Silas and Sarah were: William Amos, George Carter and Mary Ellen. There is no evidence there were children by Susan. |
Jacob
Creath Berry, born on November 28, 1798, probably in Virginia and
died about 1808 in Scott County, Kentucky. He is believe
to be one of the two children buried with his mother in the Berry family graveyard. |
