Tab I am trying to find out something about my Great Grandfather John SEXTON. He was a Union man in the Civil War in Letcher Co., Ky. On his tombstone it says Co. C, or G, Ky. State Troops. BATES, CARLISLE, THURMAN, YATES

August 27, 1997 Natalie Matthews
Tab I need any and all info on the BATES family in Madison Co. My ggrandfather, Stephen White BATES, was born in 1880 in Whitesburg, Ky., later relocating in Madison Co. and marrying Virginia CARLISLE of Anderson Co. Stephen's parents were William H. BATES (possibly of Clay Co.) and Margaret YATES of Madison Co. I am interested in some information that possibly ties my BATES line to the BATES families of Letcher Co. I am trying to prove or disprove the possibility that William BATES' father may be Thomas BATES (b.1809 d.1881) who married Lucy Lee THURMAN. Thomas BATES would be son of John Wallis BATES (b.1779 d.1843) and his first wife Lavina LIGHT (m.10-29-1803). I would appreciate any and all information on this line of BATES and any help in proving or disproving the link between William, Thomas and John Wallis BATES. Thanks so much in advance.

Tab Josh HALL (my grandfather) married Cordelia (last name possibly CRAFT or HOLCOMB) - Cordelia's mother's name was Elizabeth and she had a boarding house in Whitesburg. I believe Josh and Cordelia were born late in the 1800s. Josh HALL was a coal miner, I believe in Letcher County. My mother, Pauline HALL, was born July 1916. CALTON, CORNETT

April 1, 1998 Joseph E. Cornett
Tab I am seeking information that anyone may have about my great-grandfather, Joseph CORNETT, believed to have been born in Whitesburg, KY (Letcher County) during either the 1880's or 1890's, possibly 1870's. What I know: Joseph CORNETT was married to Sally CALTON, and lived with her in Imboden, VA (Wise Co.) until (summer?) 1912, when, after supposedly killing a man in a fight (self-defense?), he left a then-pregnant Sally. It is thought that Joseph returned to Kentucky, possibly Whitesburg. Sally gave birth to their son (my grandfather) Clarence E. CORNETT, on 26 September, 1912. When he was 21 years old, Clarence E. CORNETT had his one and only meeting with his father--the description that has been passed down to me was that Joseph had grey/silver hair at the time. The one picture that I have ever seen that was supposed to be of Joseph CORNETT showed a fairly good-sized man (tall), dark hair/features, standing outside of a mine with two other miners. What little other information I have is sketchy/conjecture at best. Does anyone out there have any information about this Joseph CORNETT? I am especially interested in what happened to him following his departure in 1912.
