Henson Family

The Hensons are of English descent, and they arrived in this country by the mid 1600's.  The spelling of the name varies from Hinson, Hynson, Hanson, to Henson, the latter being the more common today.  Records on these early Hensons are found in Stafford, Westmoreland and Essex counties, Virginia and Charles County, Maryland.  The connections among these Hensons are not known yet, but we still try.

Blair Jones includes a study of Robert Hinson in his Westbrook and Allied Families.  According to this. Robert Hinson was probably born about 1728 in Stafford County, Virginia and his parents were probably from Charles County, Maryland.  Robert probably married about 1749 in Prince William County, the part that was to become Fauquier County in 1759.  The wife's name is not known, but she must have died after the birth of their youngest son, John, in 1777.

This writer concurs that Robert Hinson probably came from Stafford County, for several were in the area.  Quite possibly he was a descendant of Joseph and Elizabeth Hoyle Henson, who lived in the latter half of the 1600's in Stafford County.  A Robert Henson and Andrew Henson are mentioned in a deed dated October 13, 1703 (Deed Book W-Z, p. 186)

The first documented record found on the Robert Hinson of this study, thus far, is his purchase of 117 acres of land from John Higgins in Prince William County in 1755 (Order Book 1754-55). On November 6, 1779, "Robert Hinson of Fauquier Co." requested the addition of 47 acres of "waste land".  It was surveyed by John Moffett, making a total of 164 acres (Patent Book I, p. 372)  A purchase of 50 additional acres in 1779 brought his holdings to 217 acres.  This tract was consistently in the land tax list of Fauquier County from 1782 until Robert's death in 1802. Fauquier County Deed Book 15, page 259, notes" James and Tapley Hinson, executors of Robert Hinson, deceased.. to Alex Morson, 214 acres lying on Licking and Tin Pot Runs.  Fifty acres of said land was purchased by Robert Hinson, deceased of William Cooke and 164 acres granted by Lord Fairfax."

A few other court records exist on Robert.  In Prince William Minuet Book, 1759-62, page 374, June Court 1762, Robert Hinson's cattle mark was recorded.  In the Prince William Court Orders of 1773-80 Robert Hinson was licensed to keep and Ordinary, or tavern.  The "Fauquier County Historical Bulletin, page 363, notes " Robert Hinson was allowed claim for sale of 375 pounds of beef at 3 cents per pound at the clerks office, March 26, 1782.  This was for reimbursement of supplying the army during the Revolutionary War.

Robert Hinson wrote his will on March 1, 1802, and is recorded in Fauquier County Will Book 3, 1796-1804.  It was proved in court on April 29 of the same year. The only children named in the will were James and Tapley Hinson, executors, and the daughter Ann Dialls.  Elizabeth Whitton was left $20.  The residue of the estate was "to be equally divided amongst my children".  Robert's wife was not mentioned, so she had apparently died

Blair Jones reconstructs from various sources, ten children of Robert Hinson:

Robert Hinson, Jr., was born on December 25, 1750.  He served in the Revolutionary War and lived to apply for his pension, # R4902,
on March 17, 1846, age 95.  He stated that he was born on December 25 in Fauquier County, mentioned his father, Robert Hinson,
and his brothers, Tapley and James who lived about 15 miles from the 96 District Courthouse in South Carolina.
Elizabeth Hinson, who married a Whitton.
Ann Hinson, who married Matthew Conner on May 25, 1781.  Bondsman were M. Conner and Edward Settle.  In Robert's will, he refers
to her as Ann Dials, so she may have been remarried.
James Hinson, was born about 1765 and married Ann Quisenberry on January 18, 1786.  Charles Colvin posted the security bond.
John "Cusinberry" father of the bride, and Robert Hinson, father of the groom, were recorded, B. Brooke was witness.  As seen above
he was in South Carolina in the 1800's.
Jesse Hinson, was born in 1767.  Two marriages are listed for him in the records.  He married (1) Mary Sullivan on April 19, 1787 and the
records note that Jesse is the son of Robert Hinson.  Jesse married (2) Elizabeth Crawford on November 28, 1787.  In the latter, Reuben
Crawford, father of the bride, signed his consent.  Robert Hinson posted the security bond, and John Miller and William Homes were

witnesses.
Tapley Hinson, was born in 1768 and married Elizabeth Holder on July 11, 1792. The marriage bond noted that she was the daughter
of Davis Holder.  Henson signed the security bond and William Crawford and John Holder were witnesses.  ("Tapley" is an interesting
name and leads us to wonder if Robert's wife was a member of the Tapley family of Virginia.
William Hinson, was born in 1770.
Haney Hinson, was born about 1772.  She married Martin Dye on February 3, 1786 and the marriage bond indicates she was the daughter
of Robert Hinson.
Margaret Hinson, was born about 1775.  She married Presley Garner on December 18, 1793.  She is listed as the daughter of Robert on
the marriage bond.
John Hinson, was born about 1777.

Another Hinson/Henson was of importance in the Fauquier County records, namely George Henson.  He began appearing in the personal property tax list of 1782.  In 1783 he was on the Virginia Land Tax List, paying tax on 100 acres.  Blair Jones assumed that he was a brother of Robert, but thus far this writer has seen no proof of that.

If George Henson was not a younger brother of Robert, then it seems most likely he was the oldest son.  He was living in the same county and named one of his first sons, Robert.  We are inclined to believe that George was a son of Robert.  No proof, however.

George Henson was born about 1748, according to the Fauquier County marriage bonds, he married Susanna Settle on September 17, 1771.  The bondsman was Charles Garner, and witnesses were H. Brook and John Duncan.  No one signed the consent for Susanna, and her parents are not known for sure.  However, since George Henson signed the marriage bond in 1773 for Hannah Settle, daughter of Benjamin and Catherine Settle, there is obviously a connection with him.  And since, George and Susanna named children Benjamin, Catherine and Hannah, this strongly suggest that Susanna was also a daughter of Benjamin.

George's named appeared in the 1782 Personal Tax List as being over 21, and having 10 horses and cattle.  His name continued to appear in the tax lists through 1797, and then he and some of the family moved to Harrison County, Kentucky.  They were certainly in Kentucky by August 7, 1798, for on that date, the daughter, Winfred married Robert Russell in Harrison County.  In 1790 George first appears on the tax list there, owning 4 horses and mules, but no land. Then on November 5, 1799, George signed an indenture with Joseph and Sarah Craig to purchase 105 acres of land on Raven Creek.  George gave "thirty five pounds to them in hand paid" for the land (Deed Book 1, p. 502).  From then on George appeared regularly on the tax list until his death.

George Henson apparently died in the latter part of 1810.  Evidence of that is found in Court Order Book B.

Edward Settle, who appears in a number of the above records, is not identified, but we believe him to be a brother of Susanna Settle Henson.  Some of the children of George and Susanna Settle Henson are not named in the estate settlement.  However, the marriage bonds provide some connections.  Another useful document is the 1840 Circuit Court case in which Joanna Henson Memefee sued her husband for divorce.  (Box 262, bundle 7305).  She recited how her husband, Joseph Menefee, agreed to buy the 105 acre Henson farm from Benjamin Henson; George Henson; Gideon Henson; William Cole and Elizabeth, his wife; Sarah Hufford and Hannah Hanes.  Presumably these were the heirs still living of George and Susanna Henson.  The document noted that George Henson, Jr. "lives in the state of Missouri, Gideon lives in the state of Illinois and William Cole and Elizabeth, his wife live in the state of Indiana.

Here, then, are the known children of George and Susanna Settle Henson in their approximate birth order.

Robert Hinson, was listed in the Fauquier County person property tax list of 1791.  He was listed in the Fayette County, Kentucky
census of 1800.  Robert was named administrator of his father's estate in January 1811.
Benjamin Hinson, was also listed in the property tax list of 1791 in Fauquier County.
Elizabeth Hinson, married William Cole.  He witnessed the marriage of Winfred Henson and Robert Russell in 1798.  Elizabeth and
William settled in Indiana.
Catherine Hinson, was born about 1774.  She married John Blackwell in Fauquier County, Virginia on July 11, 1794.  The marriage
bond indicated she was a daughter of George Hinson.
George Hinson, Jr. was born in 1776, according to a biographical sketch in the History of Lewis, Clark, Knox and Scotland Counties,
Missouri.  "George Hinson.. of English-Scotch origin, born in 1776, in Fauquier County, VA... made thirteen flat boat trips to New Orleans
in his youth and returned on horseback.  In 1794, he went to Harrison County, Kentucky and in October, 1835, located where his son

George now resides in Lewis County, Missouri.  His death 1843, was caused by falling and stricking the back of his head.  The mother
died in 1861.  George married Jane "Jinny" Williams on October 8, 1810 in Harrison County, Kentucky.  Jinny's mother, Hannah Williams
signed the consent.
Winifred Hinson, married Robert Russell on August 8, 1798, in Harrison County, Kentucky.  George Hinson, the father, consented and
George Henson, the brother was bondsman.  William Cole and Benjamin Hinson were witnesses.
Joanna Hinson, was born in 1781, according to her death record.  She and John W. Edwards married on June 22, 1807 in Harrison
County, Kentucky.  George and Susannah Hinson, her parents, gave consent.  Samuel Hopkins was bondsman and Gideon Hinson and
Samuel Hopkins were witnesses.  Joanna died on May 19, 1859 in Harrison County.  Joanna and John W. Edwards are ancestors of this
writer.
Sarah Hinson, was born about 1783.  She married David Hufford on April 16, 1801, in Harrison County, Kentucky.  George Hinson signed
consent for his daughter and Daniel Hufford was bondsman for his son.  Sarah and David settled in nearby Scott County.
Judith Hinson, married Hamon Million on November 25, 1807.  George and "Sucky" Hinson, her parents, signed consent. John W. Edwards
was bondsman, and George Payne and John W. Edwards were witnesses.  Hamon and Judith are buried in the Milton Cemetery on his
farm on Edwards Lane, north of Raven Creek.  Her stone reads "Judith, wife of Hamon Milton, died May 23, 1845, agesd 56 years, 1 mo.
& 25 days"  This means that she was born about March 28, 1790.  Hamon died on August 27, 1854, aged 67.  The death record notes he
was born in Virginia.
Gideon Hinson, was born on March 28, 1790, according to Dorothy Mayes, a descendant.  Apparently he was a twin to Judith.  He was yet
a minor in January 1811, for he was appointed guardian.  "John Smith is appointed guardian to Gideon Henson, infant orphan of George
Henson, dec'd.  Security: George Smith (Record Book B, 1811).  Gideon married Nancy Shumate on April 20, 1820.  Stephen Shumate was
bondsman.  Gideon died in Vermilion County, Illinois on August 31, 1868.
Hannah Hinson, married Michael Haines on November 21, 1822.  Gideon Henson was bondsman
