Christian Spears Family
It is believed that Christian Spears was in Kentucky as early as 1780. Family lore says that Christian and his first wife (name unknown) were at Ruddell's Fort when it was captured in June of 1780. Mrs. Spears was drowned while crossing the Licking River on the march to Michigan. Christian was imprisoned on Pontiac Island, Michigan for a while, perhaps with other Kentuckians. It is believed sometime shortly after, Christian Spears married Ann Mary Burger, daughter of John Burger, who was also taken prisoner from Ruddell's Fort. After they married Christian and Ann Mary came back to Kentucky and lived for a while in Bourbon County where he appears on the 1800 tax list . By the 1810 census he and his family are listed on Stoner Creek. The family of Christian Spears at that time consist of one male 45 plus years of age; one male under 10; two males 10-15; one female under 10; one female 10-15 and one female 45 plus years of age. Christian Spears will appears in Bourbon County, dated July 19, 1811, however date of probate is not given. He specifically names his wife and sons; John, Adam and Henry Spears. Other children are mentioned, but not named. Witnesses to the will were; William David, Martin Smith and Jacob Spears. Before 1812 Mary, along with her sons move across Silas Creek to Harrison County, Kentucky about three miles northeast of Leesburg. Tax rolls for Harrison County indicate that Ann Mary Spears owned 118 acres of land. Ann Mary Spears died on January 7, 1847 in Harrison County, Kentucky. She was buried in the Spears Family Graveyard, two miles beyond Brodwell, Kentucky on the Georgetown Road. One sources states Christian Spears was buried in the Spears Family Graveyard, Cynthiana and Leesburg Road, Harrison County, Kentucky.

Catherine Ruth Spears,
was born August 6, 1781, birthplace unknown.
She married Abraham Warth. Catharine Warth died March 12, 1814 and was buried in Spears Family Graveyard. |
Mary Ann Spears,
was born about 1788 in Virginia. She
married Peter Smith in Bourbon County, Kentucky on December 15, 1806. They are living in Harrison County in 1850 and are listed on census there. Peter is 65 years of age born in Virginia and Mary, 62 born Virginia. |
Mary "Polly" Spears,
was born about 1790 probably in Bourbon County,
Kentucky. She married William Fry on September 14, 1814 in Harrison County, Kentucky. The family is living in Harrison County and is listed on the 1850 census as William Fry, 58, born Kentucky and Mary Fry, 60, born Kentucky. |
Sarah "Sallie" Spears,
was born about 1791 probably in Bourbon County,
Kentucky. Sallie married Martin Smith on October 24, 1809 in Bourbon County.The couple is listed on the 1850 Harrison County, Kentucky census. Martin is 64 years of age born in Pennsylvania and Sarah 59, born in Kentucky. |
John Spears,
was born between 1790-1800, probably in Bourbon
County, Kentucky. He married Jane Lail, daughter of John Lail on June 26, 1823 in Harrison County, Kentucky. The family moved to Callaway County, Missouri before 1830. It is believed that John Spears died in Missouri before 1840. A Jane Spears is listed in Montgomery County, Missouri on the 1840 census. Jane may have remarried in Missouri to a Edward Wingfield. Known children of John and Jane were: Noah, b: abt 1827; John, b: abt 1835 |
Elizabeth Spears,
was born on March 9, 1795, probably in Bourbon
County, Kentucky. She married Benjamin Sutton. She died in Bowling Green, Missouri on September 22, 1884. |
Adam Spears,
was born abt 1797 probably in Bourbon County,
Kentucky. He married Leah Baxter on December 21, 1826 in Harrison County. According to old cemetery records, Adam died January 15, 1842 and was buried in the Spears Family Graveyard. His widow is listed on the 1850 census for Harrison County. One known son John M. Spears, born about 1833 in Harrison County, Kentucky. A daugther, Mary Ann married W. W. Moore. Leah Baxter married Thomas Webster 14 December 1858 in Harrison County. |
Henry Spears,
was born about 1801 probably in Bourbon County,
Kentucky. He married in Harrison County, on June 27, 1824 to Sarah David. Henry's family is listed on the 1850 census for Harrison County, Kentucky. He is listed as 49 years of age. Some know children were: Jacob C., Henry, Joel C., Noah, James, Elizabeth, Franklin, Louisa and William. |
Rebecca Spears,
was born in Bourbon County, Kentucky on July
30, 1802. She married in Harrison County, on January 16, 1816 to Elliott Roberts. They are listed on the 1850 census for Harrison County, Kentucky. |
