Our Kentucky Ancestors Who Served in the War of 1812

ADAMS, Francis - Capt. Washington Kennedy's Company, Pogue's regiment, Kentucky Militia, Commanded by Lt. Col. Robert Pogue. Born 4 November 1763, Weyhaw, South Carolina. Married (1) Margaret McKee (2) Mary Ryan - he died 12 September 1846 in Mississippi. Was the father of Francis A. Adams, who moved from South Carolina to Kentucky and later died there.

BRUNER, John Thomas, served with Mounted Kentucky Volunteers, Capt, Joseph Allen's Company, 3rd Regiment.  Married Nancy Susan found in Breckenridge County, Kentucky on 20 November 1813.

BURROUGHS, George - born ca 1790, died after 1855 in Pike County, MO. He received bounty land for his service (BLWT 39453-160-55). George enlisted in Mason County, KY. He fought at the Battle of the Thames. George married Harriet BEALL, dau Thomas Allen BEALL and Susanna BEDDO, 10 Jan 1815 in Mason County, KY. George moved to Pike County, MO about 1830.

CHELF, Fielding - Enlisted 2 Apr 1813 at the Madison Court House in Virginia, was Discharged 13 Oct 1813 in Norfolk, VA. Married Virenda NEWMAN 6 Oct 1831, Culpeper Co., VA - Died in Green County, KY 7 Dec 1873 - Served as a Pvt. with Capt. George H. Allens and Capt. Joseph Edwards SC 13729, (4th Reg., VA Mil.) Pension No. is 13729.

COX (COCKS), David - b. 1787 in Wayne County, Kentucky.
He signed his papers as COCKS. Served as a private in a company commanded by Captain Adam Vickory in the Regiment commanded by Col. Slaughter of Kentucky Volunteers. Drafted into service at Monticello, Wayne County, Kentucky on November 10, 1814 and was discharged May 10, 1815. While with the Kentucky Militia he fought in the Battle of New Orleans. David Cox married Mary McGee on February 7, 1809 at the home of her father, John McGee, in Wayne County, KY; James Weatherspoon, Minister of the Gospel, officiated. Mary McGee was born in Virginia on October 18, 1787. David and Mary (McGee) Cox moved to DeWitt County, Illinois circa 1830. They had a family of up to ten children, including George W.*, John M., Jackson (?), Amanda, James, and Peter. David Cox died September 21, 1841 in DeWitt County, Illinois and was buried in Tunbridge Cemetery, DeWitt County, Illinois. Mary Cox was granted 80 acres Bounty Land under Warrant 15,868-80-50, but sold it. She applied in 1855 for a Widow’s pension but was rejected because of a subsequent marriage after David’s death. She reapplied in 1871 and again was rejected because of the same marriage. Mary died November 14, 1872.

DANIEL, Estridge - born 15 May 1782 in VA, died 6 Nov 1852 Montgomery County, KY. He received bounty land for his service (BLWT 82300-120-55). Heserved in the 17th Kentucky Militia. Estridge married Mary Samantha FOX, dau James FOX, 1 Jan 1805 in Montgomery County. They resided in that county until he died and she moved with her family to MO in 1857.

DUNGAN, Thomas - enlisted in Harrison County, KY. Born in Pennsylvania, 18 Sept. 1775, son of Benjamin and Mary (Sharp) Dungan - husband of Mary Grey - died 20 October 1838. GGGgrandfather of Jo Thiessen

FLEMING, Robert, b. ca. 1773 in Ireland, m. Elizabeth Stumbo in Maryland Sept. 21, 1809 (license date). Robert was a private in Captain David Gooding's Company of the Regiment of Kentucky Militia. He enlisted in Floyd County, Kentucky and was honorably discharged at Fort Malden.

GLASS, Benjamin - Private in the Company of Captain James Shelton in the 5th Regiment of Virginia Militia commanded by Col. Taylor first and then Col. Park in the war with Great Britain, declared 18 June 1812. He volunteered at Henry Courthouse Virgina on or about the ___ day of June 1813 for the term of six months, and was in actual service for six months and was honorably discharged at Norfolk Virginia on the ___day of ___ 1814 as will appear by the Muster Rolls of said company. He recieved no written certificate of discharge. Source: 1851 Barren County, KY Court - application for Bounty Land for his service in the War of 1812.

HENRY, James - enlisted in Harrison County, KY. Born in Culpeper Co., VA, 1788, son of John Henry husband of (1) Mary Juett (2) Susanah Juett, died 31 October 1866, buried in Old Raven Creek Burial Ground, Harrison Co., KY.

JACKSON, Larkin, Larking - Indian fighter, guide and captain in the War of 1812. He lived along the Big Sandy River in Lawerence County, KY - father of a son born in Va in 1821. So, the state would have been southeastern Ky. or VA.

JENNER , Samuel - served under Capt. Van Dalsern's Co. in the 15th Regiment of U.S. Infantry. Married Sally _____ who died at Meade County, Kentucky 2 Aug. 1870. Pension Certificate #S28580.

KERR/CARR, Samuel -  was born ca 1794, probably around Flat Lick Creek in Pulaski County, KY where his parents Matthew and Susannah Kerr received a land grant in 1798. He served in the War of 1812 in the Tennessee Militia, enlisting Sep 20, 1814 in White Co TN as a private in Captain Asahel Raines Co of the TN Militia. He fought at the battle of Horseshoe Bend in Alabama. He was honorably discharged Apr 20, 1815 at or near Camp Manuel near Mobile, (another places in the pension papers says at or near Fort Mims and Lake Easter).

KERR, Samuel - married Easter Johnson, b 1800/1801 KY, on Feb 28, 1813 in Knox County, KY, at the home of Easter's father William Johnson. Samuel died Apr 13, 1871 and Easter died six years later on May 18, 1877. Samuel and Easter's children were:

LANHAM, Andrew Jackson - was a Pvt in the War of 1812.He served under Capt. John Fields 8th Co. of Va.Drafted Militia.Col. Charles F. Wall. Although most of the reg was drafted, Jacksonstates he volunteered at the North Garden(?) John Brown in Albermarle Co, Va. He states that he was honorably discharged at Camp Carter, Va on or about the 1st of Feb 1815. He first married Polly Lowe in Casey Co. Ky. about 1821 and had 8 or 9 children. Polly Lowe Lanham died about 1858 and later Jackson(or John) married his brother Pleasant Lanham's widow Elizabeth (Betsy) Goodman Lanham on Feb 12, 1865 in Casey Co.Ky. Jackson Lanham died 24 Dec. 1868 in Casey County, Ky. Jackson Lanham rec'd bounty land for his service and Betsey Lanham rec'd a pensionuntil her death on 24 May 1880 in Casey Co. Ky.

MOBLEY, Lewis Griffin - born 1786 in Frederick County, Maryland. Served in Maryland as a Private in Captain Claggetts Company. Died 1839 in Nelson County, Kentucky. Married to (1) Jemima (Polly) THOMPSON (2) Anna Shehan. Father of 13 children. Buried in Johnson-Mobley Cemetery in Nelson County, Kentucky.

MYLES, John, Jr.served as 2nd Lieutenant with Kentucky Mounted Volunteer Militia, Commanded by Lt. Col. James Simrall, on Roll of Capt. John Hall's Company. Married Sarah Bird in Scott County, KY on 24 Oct 1826.

MUSSELMAN, Jacob - b. 1794 in Harrison County, Kentucky. He lived in Harrison, Carroll and Pendeleton Counties, KY before he died March 27, 1867. On June 17, 1818 he married Mary Ann Readinghour [b. ca. 1790] in Pendleton Co., KY. Both of them were buried in Grant County, KY. Jacob, the son of Christopher Musselman, served as a Private in Capt. William Davis' Company of Infantry, 71st Regiment of the Kentucky Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Militia. His service was from 17 May till 9 July, 1814.

NORMAN, Caleb was in Capt Wm Ellis' Co., First Rifle reg & Capt. J.D. Thomas, Boswell Reg, Ky Detached Militia. Born 29 Jan 1777, Culpeper Co., Va., married (1.) Sarah "Sally" Finnell, Dec 1800. (2.) Lucy Payne 28 th day of Nov. 1825 He had 10 Children by Sarah, and one by Lucy.

POINDEXTER, David - b. Dec. 6, 1788 in Louisa County, Kentucky, m. Elizabeth Watts March 3, 1811 in Clark Co., KY. His parents were John and Frances Arnett Poindexter. David served as a Lieutenant in the 17th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Militia, under Lt. Col. Ambrose Eubank. He died in Scott County, Kentucky July 7, 1874. Manuscript of roster of militia officers from 1812-1816 delivered to the Kentucky Historical Society from the Archived of the Secretary of State 1923, p.266].

PRICE, Penuel, Pennel b. abt 1773, unk location, d. June 18, 1858 in Anderson County, SC. Private in Captain James Thomson's Company of Infantry, belonging to Lt. Col. Reuben Nash's Regiment of SC Volunteer Militia. According to SC Archives records of Military Service, Company Muster Rolls, he served at Fort Hawkins from Jan. 23 to Feb. 8, 1814, Fort Bainbridge from Feb. 8 to May 28, 1814, and Fort Mitchell, from May 28 to July 28, 1814. His enlistment is for 6 months; he would have been 41 years of age.
The following is of interest on Captain Thomson: From Marriage and Death Notices from Pendleton (SC) Messenger, 1807-1851 the following death notice for Captain Thomson: Issue of September 18, 1833: Departed this life after an illness of seven days only, on Friday evening the 13th inst., Capt. James Thomson, in the 64th year of his age. He was one of the first settlers in this District, in the Rocky River neighborhood ... for many years an elder in the Presbyterian Church. In 1812, during the late war, he was elected to the command of a company in which he headed an expedition to the Creek Nation."

REAMS, John - was a Private in the 28th US Infantry serving under Capt. Belt and Capt Stockton. He served from May 13, 1813 and was honorably discharged June30, 1815. While in service he was seriously wounded on the Niagara. He was born circa 1793 in Frederick County, Maryland and died 12 March 1864 at Ft. Scott, Bourbon County, KS. From 1816-1841 he resided in Fleming County, KY. He then resided in Boone County, MO from 1841-1862, and relocated to Bourbon County, KY about 1862 where he remained until his death. He is supposibly buried in Cedar Church Cemetery in Calloway Co, MO. He married Sally Swim on the 10th of Sept 1816 in Fleming Co, KY. Sally died between 1860-62. John Reams received a pension for his disability. Children of John & Sally include:George Washington Reams b. 29 Sept. 1819 KY - married Polly Ann Helm; Esther Ann Reams b. ROACH, John Whitesides - enlisted in Bath County, KY 15 Aug. 1812 in Capt. George Pugh's Company of the 1st Regiment of Kentucky Volunteer Militia. Served with General Winchester and General William H. Harrison, and taken prisoner by the British. Born 8 June, 1789 in Bath Co., KY - married Elizabeth Morgan 18 Sept., 1815; died 20 May 1870 Parke Co., IN. Children were: Sallie, Mary, Jane, Martha, Nancy, Eliza, Lucy, Henry L., William and Benjamin.

SEAMOND, Captain Manson Company of Infantry of the Kentucky Militia detached, - commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Wm. E. Boswell.

SEBREE, John b. in Orange Co., Virginia ca. 1772, son of Richard Sebree and Easter Watts. He married Sarah Johnson March 17, 1791 in Orange Co., VA. before moving to Franklin County, KY where he died in 1825. John was a private in Captain John W. Reading's Company, Kentucky Mounted Infantry, Commanded by Colonel Richard M. Johnson. John Sebree enlisted Aug. 15, 1813 and was discharged Nov. 19, 1813. SINCLAIR, Seth born in Loudoun Co., Va., and settled in Scott County, Kentucky, about 1819. His wife later filed a "Claim of Widow for Service Pension," #38158, found in the National Archives. In this document she stated that Seth served in the War of 1812 in Virginia.
She described Seth as about "five feet seven inches high, fair complexion, blue eyes." She said that she was married to Seth in Scott County on the 6th day of February, A.D. 1833, by H. Parker, minister of the M.E. Church. She reported her maiden name of Nancy T. BOYCE, and that this was Seth's first marriage. She noted that Seth died in Scott County on June 29, 1864, and gave their post office address as Stonewall. The widow's pension application was turned down for lack of documentation of his length of service, the unit he was with, and the commanding officer.

THURMAN, Berry private Captain Welburn 14th Regiment, KY Militia Wife Willie Ann Davis Thurman was his pensioner. Berry was born in VA in 1797 and died in Clinton County, KY in 1873. He is buried in the Rose of Sharon Cemetery. Known children were 1) William b. 1824, 2) M.A. b. abt. 1833 3) Christopher E. b. 1837 4) Alfred b. abt. 1836 5)Berry b. abt. 1839 and 6) Lewis abt. 1843

WATTS, Julius b. ca 1763 in Orange Co., VA died October 4, 1848 in Clark County, Kentucky. He lived in Culpeper Co., VA as well as Clark Co., KY. On Dec. 22, 1785 he married Mary Eve in Orange Co., VA. Julius was the son of Sarah (Barnett) and John Watts. He served as a Lieutenant of the 17th Regiment, Kentucky Volunteer Militia under Colonel James Browning.

WHITEHOUSE, John Private, served in Captain Edward Berry's Company, Kentucky Detached Militia, enlisted 10 Nov 1814, served until 10 May1815. Enlisted from Mercer County, KY - He was in the Battle of New Orleans. Pension number 16,126. He drew a pension of $8.00/month. At his death, his widow, Mary "Polly" Whitehouse qualified for a widow'spension, number 29,913, also at $8.00 per month. John Whitehouse was the son of James Whitehouse and Sarah ?. Polly was the daughter of Allen Jones and Elizabeth Campbell.
