Edmond Scantland Family

Edmond Scantland, according to census records was born about 1773 in Virginia.  Came to Franklin County, Kentucky and first appeared in the county records on the tax list of May 1795.  On 16 of August 1796 in Franklin County, Edmond married Anna Hawkins, daughter of William Hawkins, Sr. and his first wife Mary, of Culpeper County, Virginia.  Research will show close relationship with more than one Hawkins family.  Edmond's first land purchase is recorded in Franklin County, Deed Book A, page 141.  He purchased from Uriah Edwards and wife, for the sum of 6 pounds, a parcel of land 40 foot by 20 foot with half an 18 foot square house and described as being in the county of Franklin on the road leading from Frankfort to Georgetown.  By 1803, Edmond Scantland had somehow acquired 200 acres of land.  Reported on the tax list as first rate land, water course, Cedar Run.  No deeds in Franklin County have been located for this land.  In Deed Book 1, page 342, dated 10 August 1838, Edmond Scantland and wife Anna, for the sum of $2,500.00 sell to Joseph Roberts 100 acres of land known as Franklin Springs.

Edmond Scantland died in Franklin County, Kentucky sometime between 27 September 1851 and November 1851.  On 27 August 1851 he wrote his last will and testament.  One month to the day he made a codicil to this will.  His will is recorded in Franklin County Will Book 2, page 228 and probate in Franklin Court November 1851.  This will does not name his wife Anna.  Evidently, she preceded him in death.  However, the will does name six children; Sarah B. Crutcher, Azubah Hawkins, wife of William W. Hawkins, of Woodford County, Kentucky; John Scantland, Edmond Scantland, G. Washington Scantland, O. H. P. Scantland.  Also, a grandson, Edmond, son of O. H. P.

At some point, Edmond had acquired land in Henderson County, Kentucky.  In his will he gives to his son G. Washington land he is now living on in Henderson County.  The will implies that Edmond may have had some displeasure with the actions of his sons, Edmond and O. H. P.  He leaves to son Edmond Scantland the money he took out of the bank at Frankfort.  If son, O. H. P. doesn't obey and treat his father the way he wishes he will not share in the estate.  He also wants his grandson, Edmond to be allowed to remain with him. In Franklin County Deed Book 5, pages 417-18 on 26 November 1855, William W. Hawkins, acting as administrator of the will annexed of Edmond Scantland, deceased, sells to Thomas Farmer 131 acres of land for the sum of $2,238.50.

Edmond Scantland lived his life in Franklin County, Kentucky where he was listed on census 1800 - 1850 with his wife and children.  No death date has been located for Anna Hawkins Scantland nor a burial place for Anna or Edmond.  It is very possible they were buried in a family graveyard on their land.  Over the years, before family graveyards were protected by law, many were destroyed and plowed over for farm land or urban expansion.  During their married life in Franklin County, Edmond and Anna raised six children to live to adulthood.  Only one son, John "Jack" Scantland left heirs here in Franklin County.  The other five children migrated to other counties and states.

Children of Edmond and Anna Hawkins Scantland

Sarah B. Scantland, was born about 1800 in Franklin County, Kentucky.  She married Reuben Crutcher, about 20 years, her senior, in the mid
1830's.  No record has been located in Franklin County.  Reuben Crutcher was born about 1782 in Virginia, son of Henry Crutcher and Martha
Beasley.  He married first to Elizabeth Onion and had five sons.  Reuben and Sarah were residents of Franklin County and listed on census
1850 and 1860.  Reuben left a will in Franklin County, Will Book 3, pages 115-116, written 26 February and probate January Court 1864.  He
names and gives to his wife Sarah B. all she brought into the marriage from her father's estate.  Sarah is still living in 1870 and is listed on
census for the Bridgeport district where she is listed with real estate valued at $1,500.00.  No family members are living with her, only a family
of domestic servants.  Nothing further is known.  It is very doubtful she left heirs by Reuben Crutcher.  None have been located.
Azubah Scantland, was born about 1801 in Franklin County, Kentucky.  On 3 May 1832 in Franklin County, she married William W. Hawkins, son
of Jehu Hawkins of Virginia.  They moved to Woodford County where they purchased a farm on the Frankfort-Versailles road, known as the William
Wood Place.  The family appears on census for Woodford 1850 and 1860.  Known children are; R. T., John E., Lucy, Edmonia, William K., Elizabeth
"Bettie", James and Alice.  William W. Hawkins dies in Woodford County leaving a will recorded in Will Book R, page 241-42. Written 26 October 1857
probate November Court 1862.  He names wife Azubah and his eight children.  Naming his sons, John E. Hawkins and son-in-law, James W. Tate,
husband of Lucy J., his daughter, as executors of his will.
John Scantland, Jack as he was referred to in several records was born about 1807 in Franklin County, Kentucky.  On 15 November 1840 in Franklin
County, Kentucky he married Amanda Hawkins, daughter of William R. Hawkins and his wife Hannah Clemens Hawkins.  Jack and Amanda raised a
family of six and are listed in the census records of Franklin County, Kentucky. The will of John Scantland is recorded in Will Book 3, page 132.  It was
written 17 October 1865 and probate in Franklin County Court 18 November 1865.  He left all his real and personal estate, including the land upon which
he lived, to his wife, Amanda, for her natural life or widowhood.  It is unclear how Jack Scantland obtained the land he mentioned in will.  A search of the
Franklin County deeds has not produced any record of purchase.  Although, he did share in his father's estate, no mention of land was bequeathed to
him.  In his will, Jack names six children; O. A. C., John W., Sally J., Ann Mary, Bettie Miles and Byron S. Scantland.  At the time of the will the three
girls were unmarried.  After Jack's death, Amanda is listed on the 1870 Franklin County census for the Bridgeport district.  All the children still are
living at home and are unmarried, except Byron.  He and his wife, Fannie are living in this household.  No will or death date has been located for Amanda
Scantland.  She has not been located on an 1880 census.  A deed, dated 20 November 1883, 100 acres of land on South Benson, owned by Jack
Scantland, deceased, being 1/6 interest subject to life estate of Amanda, widow of Jack, deceased.  This could indicate Amanda was deceased.  On
12 January 1870, Amanda Scantland deed to Bryon S. Scantland land belonging to Jack Scantland, deceased.  No burial place has been located in
Franklin County for John or Amanda.  John, in his will mentions a graveyard; that is always remain such and never be sold or used for any other
purpose.  Evidently, this wish was not upheld, for no record exist of this graveyard.
Edmond Scantland, was born about 1809/10 in Franklin County, Kentucky.  He does not appear on census in Kentucky.  In a letter located in the
Scantland surname file at the Kentucky Historical Society from Mrs. Cornelia B. Nicholls of Victoria, B.C. Canada, it is suggested that Edmond may
have been Edward P. Scantland, who migrated to Phillips County, Arkansas in the 1830's  According to Mrs. Phillips, Edward P. Scantland appears on
the 1850 census for Phillips County, Arkansas with a wife and children.  She states that he married Ann Ball Waddy from Virginia and they had two
sons and two daughters.  Edward P. had land patents in Arkansas 1850.  In 1849 Edmond left for California to explore for gold.  His two daughters
were sent to Kentucky to attend St. Vincent's Academy in Union County.  Edward P. Scantland died in Phillips County, Arkansas in February 1856.
Research in Henderson County, Kentucky has uncovered several things that seem to substantiate Mrs. Nicholls claim.  Mrs. Anna B. Scantland was
born in Cumberland County, Virginia, a widow dies in Henderson County, Kentucky on 25 January 1906. Also, the death of W. W. Scantland, who
died in Helena, Arkansas 25 November 1906 and buried in Henderson County, Kentucky.  More research is needed to prove this family.
George Washington Scantland, was born about 1811 in Franklin County, Kentucky.  Named in his father's will of 1851 to receive the land that he was
living on in Henderson County, Kentucky.  G. W. is listed on census for Henderson County 1850 -1870 with his wife and family.  On 11 February 1845
in Henderson County, G. W. Scantland married Minerva Hopgood, daughter of John Hopgood of Union County.  They had two children; Alice A., who
married O. B. Cheatham on 19 October 1864 in Henderson County and John W. Scantland, who married 7 April 1875, Annie Smith in Henderson
County.  By 1870 both children are married and have left home.  Listed with G. W. and Minerva is an Edward Scantland, age 24.  I believe this may be
son of brother, Edward P. Scantland.  G. W. made his first purchase on land in Henderson on 22 June 1840 for the sum of $400.00 containing 250 acres.
George W. Scantland died in Henderson 6 January 1892, at age 82.  His wife, Minerva died 18 April 1888, age 63.
Oliver H. P. Scantland, was born about 1814 in Franklin County, Kentucky.  He appears with a wife and two children on the 1840 census for Warren
County, Kentucky.  By 1850 he and his family are still in Warren County and listed on census there.  Records have indicated Oliver's wife was Margaret
J., but her maiden name is unknown.  Records in Franklin and Warren counties have been checked for a marriage, however no record has been located.
The couple had three known children; a female born 1830-35, who was deceased by the 1850 census, Edmond and Susan A.  The family evidently
returned to Franklin County sometime after the 1850 census was taken.  Franklin County Deed Book 4, page 277, dated 19 September 1851.  Oliver
H. P. Scantland purchased from Elisha O. Hawkins, for the sum of $300.00 a tract of land containing 20 acres and being part of a tract known as the
Elisha Hawkins tract, heired by William B. Hawkins.  In Deed Book 4, page 307, dated 12 May 1852, John Clark and wife, Martha, daughter of William
B. Hawkins, deceased, sell to Oliver H. P. Scantland for the sum of $175.00, 20 acres, Lot #7 given to Martha Hawkins Clark from her father, William
B. Hawkins, deceased  In Warren County, Kentucky, Deed Book 24, page 400, dated 17 January 1853, Oliver H. P. Scantland and Margaret J., his wife
of Franklin County to James Buckley of Warren County for $105.00 land in Warren County on the Nashville Turnpike.  On 14 March 1857 recorded in
Franklin County Deed Book 6, page 165, Oliver H. P. Scantland and Margaret J., of Franklin County to Aaron Mershon for the sum of $900.00 land in
Franklin County known as lots #7 & #8 of the William B. Hawkins estate.  This is the last reference that I find for Oliver H. P. Scantland, which may be
an indication that he sold out and left Kentucky.  No census record has been located for him and his family in 1806 or 1870.
