Washington County, Kansas is rich with history and the pioneering spirit, from the Oregon and Mormon Trails and the Pony Express to the farmers and ranchers who stayed to build their homes and till the soil.
Washington County is located south of the Kansas-Nebraska border and east of the 6th Principal Meridian. The county is made up of twelve cities/villages; Barnes, Clifton, Greenleaf, Haddam, Hanover, Hollenberg, Linn, Mahaska, Morrowville, Palmer, Vining, and Washington. There are twenty-five (25) townships in the 30 miles by 30 miles that comprise the county. The county was named after our first president, George Washington. It was founded in the spring of 1860, when it was named the county seat. The first post office in the county was established in November 1861.
