OBITUARY of Clara B. Austen Tilton

Clara B. daughter of Samuel L. and Harriett J. Austen was born March 24, 1875 at Versailles, Indiana, and passed away May 10, 1962, at the Lemke Memorial Hospital, Wakeeney, Kansas. Clara had lived 87 years, 1 month and 15 days.

On December 31, 1983, she was united in marriage to Elmer J. Tilton. To this union four daughters were born. They are Mrs. Florence Sparks of Hill City; Mrs. Minnie Burbach of Collyer; Mrs. Bertha Hubalek of WaKeeney; and Mrs. Ellen Barnes of LaCrosse. There are 9 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, and on great-great-grandchild surviving her. In 1943, Mrs. and Mrs. Tilton celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Tilton lived in and around Collyer all of their married life.


Mrs. Tilton became a Christian early in life. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Collyer. She was active and held many offices throughout the years. She was a devoted wife and mother. In her passing she leaves besides her four daughters, three son-in-laws, John Sparks of Hill City; Miles Hubalek of WaKeeney; and Clyde Barnes of LaCrosse. Also many other relatives, a large circle of friends and neighbors. Funeral services were Saturday at Collyer Methodist Church with Burial in Collyer Cemetery. Rev Harry Walz was the minister. Music was by Mrs. Dale Scanlon, Mrs. John Tomanek, Winfred Inloes, Lee Razek and Mrs. R. H. Berger. Submitted by Gayle M. Garrett
