S. Bernard "Bernie" EBBERT
02-20-1929 — 04-27-2009

S. Bernard 'Bernie' Ebbert was born February 20, 1929 in Quinter, KS, to Samuel Sylvester and Nora Ellen (Bowman) Ebbert. He passed away Monday, April 27, 2009 in the Hays Medical Center at the age of 80.

As a child, Bernard lived with his family in Quinter, attended Quinter elementary schools, graduated from Quinter High School with the class of 1947, and he attended McPherson College.

On September 7, 1952, Bernard was united in marriage to Barbara DeWitt in the First United Methodist Church at WaKeeney. They resided in WaKeeney since 1952.

Bernard kept books for Verbeck Lumber Company for nine years. He later was the office manager and bookkeeper for Western Cooperative Electric in WaKeeney until retiring in 1994.

Bernard derived a lot of pleasure from the simple things in life; meticulously tending to his garden. When the Kansas wind allowed, Bernard would engage in his lifelong hobby of flying the many model airplanes which he built from kits. He also enjoyed playing pitch and pinochle, attending high school sporting events, and tending to farming activities. He was an active member of the First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara, of the home; three sons, Kim and wife, Monica, of WaKeeney, Kerry and wife, Jolene, of Ponca City, OK, Daryl of Liberty, MO; a daughter, Leana Johnson and husband, Rodney, of Riley, KS; four grandchildren, Sara, Kelly, Rachel, and Daniel Ebbert; a brother, Charles Ebbert and wife, Glenna, of Shawnee Mission, KS; a sister, Alberta Grosbach of Enders, NE; and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death was a brother, Kurtz Ebbert; and a sister, Bernadine Flora.

Services for Bernard were held Thursday, April 30, 2009 in the First United Methodist Church at WaKeeney with Pastor Glenn Krebs officiating.

Interment is in the WaKeeney City Cemetery.
