William Riley Cummings was born in Lawrence County, Illinois, October 8, 1889, & died at his home in WaKeeney, Kansas March 30, 1924, aged 84 years, 4 months & 22 days. His parents died when he was a small boy & he afterwards lived with his sisters & brothers at Ashton, Ill. At an early age he joined the Christian church at that place. Later he was united in marriage with Eleanor Van Horn & to them seven children were born four of who are living, the others having died in infancy. His wife died August 7, 1882. He later moved to Nodaway, Iowa, & married miss Betty Thompson, April 12, 1883. Twelve children were born to them, six of whom died while young. His nine living children are Joseph Riley, Newton, Iowa; Albert Melvin, Newton, Iowa; Perry Franklin, Corning, Iowa; Mrs. Grace Spitsnaugle, Mrs. Carrie Spena & Edward Cummings, WaKeeney, Kansas; Mrs. Effie Mock, La Prairie, Ill.; Earl Cummings, Freeport, Ill., Lovell Cummings, Holly, Colo. His wife, fifteen grandchildren, & one brother, & one sister, & numerous other relatives also survive him.

Mr. Cummings was a kind & loving husband & father, a good faithful man in all his Daily life, helpful to his neighbors whenever the occasion came. He was very patient in his last illness & realized that he was dying but was not afraid to go. He did not suffer pain & on the last moments he said to his son, Edward, I am going to die. Cant you see my beautiful home? He quietly passed away at 7: 30 oclock Saturday evening. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church Monday afternoon & the body was buried in WaKeeney Cemetery. The sympathy of many friends are extended to the bereaved loved ones.

The relatives from away who were here to attend the funeral were Mrs. Effie Mock, La Prairie, Ill., Earl Cummings, Freeport, Ill. & Lovell Cummings, Holly, Colo. Joe Cummings, of Stewart, Iowa, visited his father a week before he passed away.
