Sheridan County was created in 1873, and organized in 1880. It was named in
honor of Gen. Philip H. Sheridan. The borders remained relatively stable. In
1879 some land was lost to Gove and Wallace Counties, but the same lands were
regained in 1881.
Kenneth was the first county seat. Hoxie is the current
county seat.
