COUNTY FORMATION

Seward County was formed on March 20, 1873. It was named in honor of William Seward, who was Secretary of State under the Abraham Lincoln administration.

In 1881, the boundaries were expanded to absorb the counties to the west, and part of Meade County to the east. The territory gained from Meade County was returned in 1885, and Seward County's original boundaries were restored in 1886.

Fargo Springs and Springfield battled to be the county seat. Springfield won in 1887. When the railroads bypassed both Fargo Springs and Springfield, Liberal became the county seat, in December 1892.
