J. D. Reed

James Dudley Reed was born in Illinois, April 23, 1839, and passed away October 22, 1929, at the age of ninety years and six months.

He was a volunteer in the Civil War, enlisting August 10, 1861 and serving until November 4, 1865.

He was married to Rebecca Jane Barber November 25, 1858, who passed away March 9, 1903.

There were five children born to them all of whom are living except Katuria Mae McCormic, who died October 8, 1881.

The children are John W. Reed, of Quincy, Illinois; Lemuel C. Reed, of Quincy, Illinois; Fred G. Reed, of Houston, Texas; Mrs. M. w. Hoffman, of Jackson, Michigan.  Besides these there are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

He cam to Kansas in 1878 and settled on a farm near Nickerson and later moved into Nickerson, where he lived until 1908, when he moved to Quincy, Illinois, where he made his home with his son, John, with whom he lived at the time of his death.

He united with the M. E. Church at Nickerson in 1906 and later transferred his membership to the Vermont Street M. E. Church where he retained his membership.

He was well preserved and stood the test of years well until the summons came to him suddenly in peaceful sleep.

The remains, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. John W. Reed and L. C. Reed, of Quincy, Illinois, and Fred G. Reed, of Houston, Texas, arrived in Nickerson Saturday and the funeral was held from the M. E. Church Saturday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. Miles in charge.

A quartette composed of Mr. and Mrs. I. L. Kirkhuff, Mrs. w. W. Hamilton and Warren C. Detter, with Mrs. Bozeman, pianist, sang several beautiful selections.  There were many beautiful flowers from old friends.

The body was laid to rest in the beautiful Wildmeade cemetery.
