Walter Payne Obituary


Walter Payne, 618 A, died at 1: 45 p.m. Saturday in his home after a month’s illness.

Born Mar. 1, 1856 at McClean county, Ill., Mr. Payne came here 70 years ago. He taught in Reno county schools a number of years and then went to Kiowa county where he was school superintendent several years. Returning here, he was active in business until he was 86 years old. His wife, Martha Jane, whom he married in Hutchinson May 1, 1883, died in 1941. Mr. Payne was a member of the First Presbyterian church.

He is survived by: three daughters, Inez Payne, of the home, Mrs. Bernice Carter, Memphis, Tenn., and Mrs. C. W. Moream, Wheaton, Ill.; two sons, Rex V. and Russell W. Payne both of Wichita; two sisters, Mrs. Cora Belle Abbott, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Nella P. Cowen, Tulsa, Okla.; and six grandchildren.

Funeral will be at 4 p.m. Monday in Johnson and Sons chapel with Rev. Ralph Evans officiating. Burial will be in Eastside cemetery.
