Emmett S. Avery, 71, of 402 East 17th died Feb. 1, 1997, at Columbia Halstead Hospital.
 
He was born Jan. 20, 1926, at Fort Cobb, Okla., the son of Travis and Anna Evans Avery. A long-time resident of Hutchinson, he retired in 1976 after 28 years with Cargill Salt and again in 1989 from USD 308.
 
He was a lift member of the American Legion and a U.S. Navy Veteran of World War II.
 
On October 23, 1943, he married Viola M. Zumalt at Hutchinson. She survives.
 
Other survivors include: three sons, Emmett E. Avery, Littleton, ery D. and Dennis D., both of Hutchinson; a daughter, Joyce D. Stewart, Hutchinson; a brother, Henry, Clark Grove, Minn.; three sisters, Myrtle Robinson, Juen Peterson and Doris Swenson, all of Hutchinson; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
 
Graveside service will be at 9 p.m. Tuesday in the Halstead (Kan.) Cemetery, with the Rev. Larry D. Alexander president. Friends may call from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today and until noon Tuesday at Johnson & Sons Funeral Home, Hutchinson.
