COUNTY FORMATION

St. John County was created in 1871 getting its territory from Wallace County. The name, St. John County, was changed to Logan County September 17, 1887. Logan County was named in honor of the Civil War General John A. Logan.

Russell Springs was the first county seat, until 1963, when the county seat was moved to Oakley.

Logan County is famous for its mile-long stretch of Smoky Hill Chalk bluffs, which tower 100 feet high over the Smoky Hill River. The area is in Little Jerusalem Badlands State Park, named for the bluff's resemblance to the ancient walled city.
