An Elk City Pioneer

The death messenger came to Elk City on Wednesday of last week and called Comrade Samuel N. West, one of its well known and for a quarter century a very prominent citizen. He was an Indianian by birth and had passed his seventy-first birthday. While yet in his teens he had the patriotic enthusiasm to offer his life in defense of the Union and served in a Hoosier regiment and was wounded at Prairie Hill. After the war he came to this county and located in the vicinity of Elk City, and became a booster, and for years was in business, but infirmities of age caused him of late years to retire. His funeral was held at the Christian church, with sermon by Rev. H. W. Nicholson, and interment in Oak Hill cemetery by his comrades of the Grand Army, and the attendance was large—all of the business houses closing, out of respect to his memory. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Joehanson, and sons, H. E. West of this city; and three others.
