______
From Monday’s Daily.
Stricken with apoplexy yesterday morning at 8 o’clock, Robert P. Miles never recovered consciousness and passed away at 3 o’clock this morning. Mr. Miles had not been in robust health for some time but there was nothing to indicate anything alarming in his condition until he was stricken. Mr. Miles’ daughter, Miss Alice Miles, made her home with her father, and she and his son, Charles P. Miles, who recently came here on a visit, were with him at the time of his death.
Mr. Miles’ death occurred under circumstances very similar to that of his wife. She died January 11 of last year, her death, too, being due to apoplexy and she was in comparatively good health until a few hours before her death.
Arrangements for the funeral of Mr. Miles have been deferred awaiting word from his brother, who lives in Ogden, Utah. If it is possible for the brother to come the funeral probably will not be held until the latter part of the week.
Mr. Miles is survived by a son and daughter, Charles P. Miles and Alice M. Miles; four sisters, Mrs. Anna Moore, Siloam Springs, Ark., Mrs. Florence Hurt, Belva, Okla., Miss Katherine Miles, Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Sebra Denny of Siloam Springs, Ark., three brothers, Ben Miles, Fairvalley, Kansas, Will Miles, Hawkeye, Mo., and Charles Miles, Ogden, Utah.
Mrs. Moore and Mrs. Denny arrived this morning from Siloam Springs. Mrs. Sallie Frakes and daughter, Sarah, arrived from Nevada, Mo., this morning. Mrs. Frakes is a sister of the late Mrs. Miles. Another sister, Miss Lillian Gott, of Springfield, Mo., is also here.
Robert P. Miles was born March 21, 1949, in Polk county, Missouri, and was closely approaching his sixty-fifth birthday at the time of his death. He came to Kansas in 1880.
With the exception of two years, 1894-96, spent in Siloam Springs, Ark., Mr. Miles made his residence in Cherokee county from 1888 until the time of his death. He farmed in Neosho and Lyon townships, also teaching school in that section of the county for a long time in the early days.
He served as trustee of Neosho and Lyon townships at different times; his business ability, and the confidence of the people making him a specially valuable man in that position.
Mr. Miles also served as deputy under County Treasurers Sadler and Shearer. He was also county assessor.
Two years ago last June he became connected with the Cherokee County State bank and was assistant cashier at the time of his death.
Mr. Miles was a veteran of the civil war, having served in the Fourteenth Missouri Cavalry Volunteers. He was a charter member of the G. A. R. post at Melrose, later transferring his membership to John A. Dix Post No. 59 in Columbus and being adjutant of that post at the time of his death.
Mr. Miles was also a member of the I. O. O. F.
Mr. Miles was a member of the Methodist church and took much interest in it. He was a member of the “King’s Business” class in the Methodist Sunday school, taught by Prof. W. E. Morgan. He was making preparations for Sunday school when stricken yesterday morning. He complained of feeling dizzy about 8 o’clock. A little later he lapsed into unconsciousness from which he never rallied and passed away early next morning.
A quiet and unassuming man, Mr. Miles had those qualities which made him admirably discharge the duties of husband, father, neighbor and citizen. In the southwest part of the county where he spent so many years he was highly esteemed and later when he came to Columbus he gained many friends here who placed an equally high estimate on him. Mr. Miles was characterized by integrity of character and an evident desire to deal fairly and kindly with all his fellow men.
His sudden death comes as a shock to the community and all will join in extending heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved relatives.
