Obituary---R. S. Rogers.

Another one of the early settlers of Kansas has “gone the way we all must go.” R. S. Rogers died at his home in Humboldt on November 21. He was born in Decatur, Illinois, in February, 1839. He was married to Barbara Garver in April, 1860, and enlisted in the Union army, Company B, 116th Illinois Infantry, in August, 1862, and was mustered out of the service in June 1865. The family moved to Humboldt in November, 1866, and lived in and near Humboldt until his death. He leaves a wife, five children, fifteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

He had been married for fifty-six years, and it fell to the lot of the faithful wife to stand by the bedside of her companion and “watch the boat from the silent land bear him away.” And now that he is gone no one will miss him like the lonely wife who shared his joys and sorrows through all these years.

“Dearest father, thou hast left us

And our loss we deeply feel,

But ‘tis God that has bereft us,

He can all our sorrows heal;

Yet again we hope to meet thee,

When the day of life is fled,

Then in Heaven in joy to greet

thee

Where no farewell tear is shed.”
