His Death Occurred at His Home

North of Town This Morning---

Been Failing for Some Time.

Nimrod Hankins, one of the oldest residents of Iola and Allen county, died this morning at his residence north of town. Mr. Hankins had been ailing for some time. During the entire winter he has been unable to leave the house and his death was not unexpected. The funeral will be held from the residence Friday afternoon at two o’clock and will be under the auspices of the Masonic Fraternity of which the deceased was a member. Rev. Mr. Murphy, of the Methodist church, will officiate. The body will be intered in the Iola cemetery.

In the loss of Mr. Hankins Allen county and Iola lose one of the most respected of their citizens. He was born March 1, 1831, in Vermillion county, Illinois. He was the son of Fielden L. Hankins; a Virginian, a farmer, and a soldier of the war of 1812. During the most of Mr. Hankins’ life he has lived as a farmer. In 1856 he left Illinois and came to Kansas, locating near Iola. When the war broek out he enlisted in Company E, of the Ninth Kansas Cavalry. He enlisted as a private but soon rose to the rank of First Lieutenant.

On November 1, 1865, he was married to Elizabeth A. Case, a teacher of the county and the one who taught the first school at Cofachique in 1859. Six children were born of this union , four of whom survive him. They are William C. Hankins, of this city: Miss Olive Hankins, Richard N., and George D. Hankins.
