Michael Worley Dies, he was born in the state of Virginia, Oct 3, 1833 and died at Woodward, OK, Aug 31, 1917 at the age of 83 years, 10 months & 27 days.
     When a boy he moved with his parents to Indiana and shortly afterward to the state of Illinois. After several years, when a young man, they moved to Iowa, settling in Davis county. Here, in the year 1857 he was united in marriage to Sarah A Camron. To this union eight children were born, two of whom died in infancy. The six surviving are Mrs. Elizabeth J Davis of Dennison, TX, O W Worley of Eskridge, KS; Wm V Worley and Mrs D E Lineker of Palermo, CA; J A Worley of Mooreland, OK and Mrs W H Carter of Wilmore, KS. At the age of 15 he was converted and joined the M E Church, of which institution he was ever a consistent and steadfast member.
     In 1861 he enlisted in Company E, Third Calvary, Volunteers, and served the entire four years of the war. Three years after the war, 1868, he moved with his wife and children to Jackson co, KS and lived there until 1877, when he moved to Wabaunsee county. He lived in this county until the death of his wife, June 3, 1905. After this, and until his death, he made his home with his children.
     Funeral services took place at the Waushara church, Tuesday, Sept 5 1917, conducted by the Rev Fred Boyer. Internment in the Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, near Eskridge, but in Lyon Co, KS. (This cemetery is also called No. 9 Cemetery, and called Waushara Cemetery).

Michael, at the age of 27, enlisted Aug 17, 1861 with the Union Army, Company E, 3rd Iowa Cavalry. Mustered in Sept 4, 1861. Promoted Seventh Corporal, April 3, 1862; Sixth Corporal Jan 20, 1863; Fifth Corporal July 31, 1863; Second Corporal Jan 1, 1864. Re-enlisted and re mustered Feb 1, 1864. Promoted Sixth Sergeant May 1, 1865. Fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge in March 1862. He was wounded in the Battle of Moores Hill in Callaway Co, Missouri, In July 1862. Other battles the 3rd Iowa fought in were, Shiloh, TN, Seige of Vicksburg and Siege of Atlanta, Ga. Mustered out Aug 9, 1865, Atlanta, GA.
After the Civil War he lived in Davis Co, Iowa, by 1868 he was in Jackson Co, KS, near Holton, in 1870 he was in Franklin Township, Jackson Co, KS, then moved to French Valley (a territory name), finally settling in Wilmington Township, Wabaunsee Co, KS in 1880.

In a book by Joseph A Mudd, "With Porter in North Missouri" (A Chapter in the History of the War Between the States). There is a paragraph on the Battle of Moore's Mill, naming the companies & men who were wounded & killed. It states that M. Worley, & J Worley, were wounded, that is Michael & brother Jacob.

We have a copy of Michael's discharge, which states he is 6' tall, with dark complexion, grey eyes, and black hair, his occupation is a farmer. The discharge was given at Atlanta, GA, 9 Aug 1865, by J Hays, Captain.
