John A. Shukers.

John A. Shukers, residing about nine miles northwest of Sedan, died at his home Monday, May 15, after a lingering illness of several weeks, due to the disabilities of age.

He was born in Ashland County, Ohio, September 26, 1841, and was 80 years, seven months and 19 days old at the time of his death. He was a volunteer soldier in the Civil War, enlisting at the age of 19 years, and served four years in Battery B, First Ohio Light Artillery, he was a member of Stone River Post, G. A. R. of Sedan, Kansas.

On November 9, 1865, he was united in marriage with Sylvia Selina Reynolds, with whom he happily resided for over 56 years. He emigrated to Mitchell County, Kansas, in 1871, and was one of the early pioneer homesteaders in that region. He moved to Green County, Illinois in 1874, and returned to Pawnee County, Kansas in 1879. In October, 1879, he moved to Montgomery County, Kansas, where he resided near Independence until 1890, when he purchased the farm where he has since resided.

He leaves surviving him his widow and four children; a daughter, Agnes M. Straight, who lives on an adjoining farm; three sons; Frank S., of Sedan, Charles D., of Independence, and Carson R., who resides at the home address; a daughter, Mrs. Hattie E. Stewart died about three years ago. He also leaves surviving 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren; a brother William Shukers, and many other relatives.

He was a kind, loving and considerate husband and father, a man of strong and sturdy character whose word was as good as his bond. Honest and fearless, with strong likes and dislikes. Clean morally and physically, he transmitted to his descendents, a strong, sturdy physique, which is manifest even in the third generation. He was strong and vigorous mentally, and retained his mental powers almost to the last, talking rationally with members of the family, within an hour of his demise.

Funeral services were held at the Christian church in Sedan, Wednesday, May 17, at 2:30 p.m. conducted by Rev. C. T. Coton, assisted by Rev. L. E. Snapp. Interment was made in Greenwood cemetery with military honors, a firing squad of World War soldiers firing a final salute over the grave.
