Old Soldier Passed Away

  John R. Shaw was born in New Albany, Indiana, February 6, 1840.

  He was married to Rebecca J. Davis August 30, 1866.  To this union were born five children, three boys and two girls, all of whom were at the funeral.

  He and his wife united with the Church of Christ in early life.  Home to Linn county in 1872 and have resided on the same farm 4 miles east and 11/2 miles north of Blue Mound until his death, January 5, 1910, at the age of 69 years, 10 months and 26 days.

  The deceased was an ex-Union soldier, having served three years as private in Co. H, 3rd Iowa Cav.  After being discharged he re-enlisted, but the writer did not learn his regiment.

  The funeral services were conducted at the home by Elder F. C. Cash, of the Christian church and the remains were laid to rest in the Blue Mound cemetery.  The bereaved family have the sympathy of their many friends and neighbors in this, their hour of sorrow.
